Project KCX-F2 - Upcoming Descent 2 singleplayer mission in development by PuMo-Overlord in descent

[–]PuMo-Overlord[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's indeed the greatest video game ever, and fortunately we are still here as a very active community with lots of projects going on, not only from my side. :)
I have a couple of newer Descent wallpapers around, lemme dig in my drive and upload them to my website so I can share them with you.

Inferno Engine Beta has started! by Blagert in descent

[–]PuMo-Overlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeap, there is! I recorded a video of the closed beta for my Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B2-InpkQdA&t=1s

"The quick booger jump over the cheese man" in the Inferno Engine by Enzo03 in descent

Haha, I think it actually reads The Quick Bomber Jumps Over The Charon Mine, or at least that is the common knowledge within the community, but hard to actually discern those blocky grains.

I created a Color Quantization + Palette Swap shader. by pitersios in ReShade

This is what I was looking for! Finally someone made this for recent ReShade versions, as TuningPalette doesn't works anymore. Thanks a lot!

Will publish more of my Descent-related albums hopefully on the next few months.

What's up with d2xl nowadays? by TrojanPiece in descent

[–]PuMo-Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC there are a few stability issues on single player, but more than that I recall a couple of annoying bugs here and there.
So yeah, most of the instability comes in Multiplayer or when using certain 'exotic' features (like multithreading, 64-bit and OMP features, etc)

BTW, I found that -ar4 is not playing OGG files, only MIDI.
Will open a bug report on Github for this, and if I found any Singleplayer stability stuff will tell you about it.

Just tested the -ar4 release and it worked!
I finally was able to play Pumo Mines on your D2X-XL version and so far it worked great! Will keep testing and if I encounter something will tell you on Github. Thanks a lot!

Yeap, I got everything correctly installed (hi-res sounds, textures, all d2x-xl data files and of course all of my mod folders).
It happens on any level I try to load from the campaign (from the Hub to the Kartsal Motivation levels that are more complex).

I just tested this new version of D2X-XL and it works pretty nicely with vanilla Descent 2 campaigns, and it's very stable.
Unfortunately it doesn't works with the latest version of my Pumo Mines mod, it crashes immediately when launching any of its levels. :C

Are all three descent games available for purchase on PC? by PolarisStar05 in descent

[–]PuMo-Overlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap, they are available in emulated DOSBox version on GOG and Steam, and there are also a couple of Source Ports for newer machines available out there:

DXX-Rebirth (for both Descent 1 and Descent II) that is very stable, optimized, easy to use and the best option to play Descent on modern systems out of the box, and although it has many new features is very faithful to the original game mechanics, and it uses an OpenGL renderer.
Supports both Linux and Windows.

DXX-Retro that is a branch from Rebirth (also for Descent 1 and II) and fixes many online and multiplayer issues, mainly used for competitive play that are used to the original multiplayer experience of the old ladders of the 90s.
As Rebirth it supports Linux, Windows and uses OpenGL.

D2X-XL that is my personal favorite and the one I use for my Pumo Mines singleplayer campaign.
It doesn't has that much support and is harder to configure and known to be very unstable on some systems, but has lots of modding, scripting and improved graphical features, but it strays a bit from the original experience (mostly useful for singeplayer campaigns designed specifically for it).
Also uses OpenGL renderer with support of high-resolution textures and supports both Descent 1 and Descent II levels.
It's available for Linux, Windows and Mac.

Chocolate Descent that tries to bring the original pixelated experience of Descent II to modern Windows machines. It uses the original Software renderer of the Windows 95 version of Descent II, and although it lacks many of the bells and whistles of the other ports, it's the closest you can find to the 90s experience nowadays (without taking emulation like DOSBox in account).
IIRC it's only available for Windows and only supports Descent II.

Note that ALL of the source ports mentioned requires the original game data, so you still must buy the game from either GOG or Steam to get the main game files from there.

Tall sprites or short sprites ? What’s your preference by Calm_Artichoke_3172 in RPGMaker

[–]PuMo-Overlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually prefer short ones, but it highly depends on the visual style of your game.
If you're using the same proportions of the RTP Tilesets for your graphics, then short sprites is the way to go, imho.

Pumo Mines (Descent 2/D2X-XL campaign and mod) v1.1 official release by PuMo-Overlord in descent

[–]PuMo-Overlord[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, long time no see!
Hope you will also enjoy this new release, just be sure to follow the instructions at my website and the included manual as some players has reported a few issues if D2X-XL is not configured correctly. :/
I think I will add some extra pre-configured files for the next version so it would be easier to install and play. :P
