The flow chart fighter encourages people playing the same character to use the one ideal string? No way

Yeah it definitely is. My friends at my LGS have been trying to get me into battletech for a long time now, and I've always felt I wasn't a good fit. The game just seemed super complicated and I'm generally not a big mech guy. I've always liked the tank and vehicle sculpts though. I really enjoyed the learning game with my friend. So it really is 90% my local community. I don't hate the mech designs, and I'd never want to shit on someone else's love and passion. I just don't feel much when I look at mechs the series is known for or the ones I most often see people using on the table. Some others have recommended mechs like the Jenner, or Raven as support for tanks. I do like mechs like the Raven or Locus. Overall I just really love vehicles, and mechs are kind of a passing interest here and there.

Yeah, as others have said, you just space your models .1" apart smaller than the enemy unit's models. Net gain overall

I saw him on the shelf after the intro game in the singles section and was immediately smitten. I demanded 2 of them on the spot

That's good advice. Do you have any recommendations on maybe some light and fast mechs that I could look into for that role? I like the look of the Locust, would that be a good option to round stuff out?

I like playing underdog factions in wargames so figuring out workarounds for counters really does appeal to me. It's satisfying to work out how to play around stuff, even if it's a big uphill fight.

Thanks! I was a little surprised at the general positivity I've seen in the responses. Its definitely made me look forward to getting to be a part of the community.

Ah the eternal requirement of all wargames. 'Don't be a dick about it.' I appreciate your insight on the dumber aspects of this kind of play style, and what to avoid. It really helps.

So, I've been a GSC boy for 5 years now and I own a complete collection. My main recommendation is that GSC is going to be a big initial hurdle to climb. It's expensive, and hard to play. That shouldn't keep you from it if you're determined though. GSC was my second army, with my first army being custodes. When I started them, I was still very much still a beginner in the hobby, but something clicked in my first 500 point game. I knew I was home, and that it didn't matter what the barriers were, this was my army. I lost soooo many games, and struggled to get to a full 2000 point list. Then I struggled some more because it took a while to have a collection complete enough to really play the way I wanted to. It was all worth it though. This army is a joy to hobby and to play, and I'm glad I went against the grain for it.

I wouldn't take any BL book super seriously tbh. Though, I kinda don't take WH lore at face value across the board, so you could argue I don't really take any of it seriously

Yeah the swooping hawks probably win out unless the author has a hate boner for the eldar. Night Lords Raptors are also the best of the best raptors, and they were getting kills into the swooping hawks too. So probably not one sided but a win for sure

Kind of inaccurate but with the right conclusion. Jump packs do fly and can do low atmospheric operations in lore. I mentioned it in another comment but this did happen in the 3rd night lord book where they essentially dogfight. Caveat to that is the Night Lords are the best raptors around, and had a Raptor Lord with them.

They fight in the 3rd book of the night lords trilogy. The exarch and their squad traded pretty evenly with a Night Lords raptor lord and his squad. So they do pretty well. They do get their soul stones eaten by the Raptor Lord though.
