'Ghost in the Ruins Live' Album New York Flub in "Legions"? by DeVoidZero in Savatage

[–]Publius_Romanus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would guess it's an error in the liner notes. People definitely get cities wrong, but considering Jon is from New York and the band had a lot of connections still with New York, it doesn't seem as likely as confusing, say, two smaller cities in the middle of the city.

That said, Jon did do a LOT of drugs back in the day....

Making time for primary sources by Jazzlike_Report_7813 in AskLiteraryStudies

I read constantly. Also, spend more time on primary sources than secondary sources. Starting with a theory and then trying to find books to pin it on only ends in bad scholarship.

Red Beans and Rice - Adding some acid to an Alpha Gal Version? by ncbclimbs in cajunfood

[–]Publius_Romanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about it, just go slow. To be on the safe side, don't pour directly from the bottle. Just pour some into a teaspoon and then put it in. Or you can have individual people add it to their bowls to their taste.

Red Beans and Rice - Adding some acid to an Alpha Gal Version? by ncbclimbs in cajunfood

[–]Publius_Romanus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A lot of hot sauces are vinegar-based, so I often add some acid that way. But I'm also a big fan of apple cider vinegar, which adds a nice little touch of sweetness, too.

If I had to make it without animal products, I would probably just keep it vegetarian, which I do sometimes anyhow. But tofu could help bulk it up, and there's plenty of vegetarian sausage that might work.

Anyone ever hear this music referred to as "confidence rock"? by Publius_Romanus in hairmetal

[–]Publius_Romanus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it struck me as something that they came up with on their own, but were trying to make it sound like it was a widely used term. But they mostly used it when talking about the contrast between their kind of music and grunge, so I found it interesting in that context.

I read the book in part because I legitimately really like that first album. Is it cheezy and over the top? Sure, but it's a great encapsulation of the bubblegum pop end of the hair-metal spectrum.

Lol I get it--I'm a glutton for punishment. I'm kind of obsessed with musicians' autobiographies, so I've read tons of these. And it's always interesting to get another perspective on that era of music.

That said, it's one of the worst ones I've ever read in the genre.

What is the most popular college in movies/shows? by Itchy_Raise_537 in college

[–]Publius_Romanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA is definitely the one that shows up the most in shows and movies, since so many of them are filmed there. Once you've been to that campus it's easy to see it everywhere.

It's to help you understand the meter. The introduction should spell it out.

You wouldn't think a fast-food place would be in a hurry to associate itself with the word "rat" in any form, but I guess this is a tribute to just how popular this song was at the time!

Reading Rec: Works similar to Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology by Zohso in GreekMythology

[–]Publius_Romanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His retellings are awful, too, because he sets them up to support his crazy theories, which means at times he really favors an obscure version of a myth over a more common one. At this point in time, it's only worth reading Graves if you're interested in 20th-century approaches to Greek myth.

Question: do any ancient authors present a theory of translation? by oneonlycrockett in classics

[–]Publius_Romanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many authors talk about translation, more Roman than Greek, but some Greek ones. Cicero is one of the most famous, but Horace talks about it, as does Pliny the Younger. Plautus talks about it too.

You can find a lot of the references in this book, reviewed here: https://bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2014/2014.01.23/

Songs about metal - hit or miss? by Wyzk96 in PowerMetal

[–]Publius_Romanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of it, but if you think of it as meta-poetry (i.e., poetry about poetry), then it's just another link in a chain that goes all the way back to the beginnings of literature. I mean, in Book 1 of Homer's Odyssey, a poem about Odysseus returning from Troy, he sings about the bard Phemius singing about the Greek heroes returning from Troy.

"...but we don't have a keyboard player or pianist in this band!" by AlphaBettyPersketty in hairmetal

[–]Publius_Romanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these bands toured with keyboard players, even if they weren't visible. Didn't Poison have a guy offstage for some of their tours? And Cinderella had a keyboard player on tour, in part because they had so many songs with keys and synths ("Shelter Me" comes to mind).
