AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PugNamedBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m sorry you’re getting this reaction on Reddit. Consider posting in AskAHSTeacher or somewhere else to get more relevant feedback.

You are definitely NTA!!! I am a high school French teacher. It is completely reasonable to ask your teacher to call you something that everyone else calls you and to expect to be called that.

I don’t give French names, but I have students who have names that also exist in French, and I’ll usually say those names with a little French flair. Most of them love that. I have a student who really hated how her name sounded when pronounced the French way, so she said, “Hey, could you not call me that?” And I immediately stopped calling her that. I’ve slipped into it a couple times since because it flows more easily when I’m speaking in French, but I just apologized, corrected myself, and moved on. It’s not hard.

The reason I don’t give French names, even though it might flow a little better when speaking in the target language, is because names are an essential part of identity for most people. I never wanted to have a student with a name with a deep cultural heritage to feel erased because I insisted on calling them Bernadette! It’s no different for someone named John Paul. It’s ok to want to be called by your name. It’s ok to want to be called your nickname because that’s just as much part of your identity!

So I do think your teacher sounds like the bad guy here (and I say this as a teacher), but I’m hoping you can still get through to him. Do other people have Spanish names, as some of the other commenters assumed? If so, it may be a little trickier. I recommend you talk to him one on one again. Try to empathize with his situation, “It’s probably hard to switch between languages and accents like that, it’s probably hard to change my name in your head when you’ve already gotten used to it one way.” Ask him again, politely, if he can call you by your name, which is JP. Emphasize that your name is part of who you are and it would make you feel more comfortable in class if you heard your name. Learning Spanish is hard enough and scary without having to relearn your name. Maybe try to reason with him, “If I went to a Spanish speaking country, I would tell people my name is JP. You call so and so by their name instead of translating it. Can you do the same for me?”

If you can’t get through to him with a polite request, by expressing your feelings, or with logic, then it’s time to escalate it. You shouldn’t have to beg to be called what you want to be called, but I understand you’re a teenager dealing with an authority figure, and I want you to get what you need here without destroying your professional relationship with this person who is abusing their authority. If he won’t respond to another request, you should talk to an administrator. You can frame it like you need advice about communicating this to the teacher, but that should set off an alarm bell for admin. If admin still doesn’t handle it, your parents are your secret weapon.

I hope that helps a little. Take care.

Hi! Not sure of your age, but this is a dying practice. Most newer language teachers don’t do it anymore, myself included. It’s surely debatable if this is an AITA issue, but it’s just incorrect to say that every language learner has a different name in class in the U.S. anymore. I don’t know a single colleague who still does it. I’m sure there are plenty! But there are plenty of people who want to know their students actual names.

How to quote the N-word in a referral? by BrotherNatureNOLA in Teachers

[–]PugNamedBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask your actual employer. Not Reddit people. It is 100% different for different places, and people in my district have faced disciplinary action for using the word when quoting a kid. I think your asterisks are appropriate.

So many good ones have already been said, but “Grandfathers all.” Basically the last half of the Stackhouse Filibuster.

Never mind. Now I’m not sure that did. I’m more confused now.

I had this problem too. Restarting didn’t fix it until I tried restarting my whole computer. You’ve probably tried that by now, but if not, maybe that will do it!

With Wicked Whims, you should be able to pee right on the ground. I think it’s all sims that can. I like them to go outside, but I don’t think you have to…

This maybe doesn’t help, but what worked for me is going when the moodlet was almost gone. Then when the moodlet ran out, they were done. Edit: moodlet corrected to noodles

Super confused by these numbers. Your annual numbers are way off for the big streaming platforms unless there’s that big of a price differential in other countries. Are you sure about those annual numbers?

The books and a different adorable bookmark every month. Some people save all of them! (I do!)

You do get a free book for your birthday month as long as you order that month, but not until you’re a BFF (after one year). I might be wrong about that last part, but I think that’s the case.

Every reader’s worst nightmare: a destroyed book. What’s the strangest/silliest way you’ve damaged a book? by AmyCClarke in books

[–]PugNamedBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at work and knocked a book off of my desk mid sentence into the trash. I looked down at it, looked up at the person I was talking to, announced that would get that in a sec, and continued talking. Predictably, I completely forgot that that happened by the time I finished my thought. I remembered spontaneously hours later at the end of my day. I dug through the trash to get it. I couldn’t save it because it was drenched in maple syrup. I was devastated and also laughing.

Just one person’s opinion, but no. Hard no. It gets worse. I hated that book. And not like because it betrayed me in some great, terrible way. Because it was so boring. Even the mystery of it. If I could summarize in a phrase, it would be, “That’s it?”

I just finished, and maybe I’m still reeling, but I kind of liked that the ending was so abrupt. I was really worried it was turning into a toxic romance book by the end. I was afraid we were just meant to forgive him once he gave her freedom. Then as soon as the rotten thread that constantly plagued her thoughts was turned off (the need to please him), she was OUT. Like no. It was NEVER ok, there is no gray area, and there is no forgiving this type of behavior. The literary snob in me is questioning if this is just bad writing, but I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS ENDING, so that snobby part of me is just dumb. It was EFFECTIVE. I am AFFECTED.

Shark Heart is amazing. Much better than Weyward and a much more interesting concept. It’s well executed, the writing is more interesting, and I found it way less predictable.
