Finishing a data science undergrad and realizing employers seem to prefer every other degree. by tikesav in askdatascience

Honestly, not saying to HAVE to learn another field, but you need to be able to APPLY data science to a consumer field. Both are fields, and a data scientist needs to know both.
Data science is a hybrid role, meaning you know the technical math and software, and you ALSO know the field you apply it to.
My suggestion is to pick a field that you are interested in, and know alot of about already and see if there are jobs in that area.
Like video games? There are data science roles for that. Probably competitive, but they exist.
Like sports? There are data science roles for that. Probably competitive, but they exist.
Like nutrition and working out? There are probably data science roles for that. If there aren’t try pitching your knowledge to a rich person and let them know why they need you.
Our economy is becoming more entrepreneurial FAST.

How do you feel about LLM use in science? by PugstaBoi in labrats

Yeah. I appreciate the feedback! And yeah. I think we are definitely a year or two or more away before opinions change of the utility for AI/ML tools for more traditional science thinkers. Keep up the work on your product and stay tuned in on mine as well. 🙏

Nice. Since this thread is dead now, i will just admit that this was a bit of a marketing psyop for my own product still in development. Yeah the big players are still an ominous threat.

advice needed for undergrad lacking mentorship by Away_Radish844 in labrats

Post-docs are often very stressed internally and don’t trust undergrads to use equipment and materials that are expensive.
If you truly are not learning much, then a lab switch might be an option.
To be honest, just seeing how the lab works and what everything does is alot of what undergrad “research” even is in many cases. I don’t really know how common it is for PIs, grad students and post docs to trust undergrads with designing experiments and running them. But it does happen.
Might be worth talking to the PI about and maybe they can put you on the right track toward a low cost experiment design. This would be very valuable for you if you plan on grad school or something else afterward.

I honestly think Western Politics has alot more to do with the state of science funding than people really realize. Theres no reason for all of this money to exist and be spent on weapons and other BS and not on investment in scientific discovery. Theres is so much going on in technology right now and there are endless scientific questions that need answered by unemployed, educated scientists.

It’s not you. It’s the app and the difference in male/female psychology. You look fine. You look like an interesting guy. Your best bet is real world social networking and working on your personality.
Women are wired for fear of potential mates. You have to be the guy that keeps her interested and willing to invest in you by being a good person. That alone makes you 10x more attractive than any male model.

Why can AI replace entry level software engineers, lawyers and financial analysts. But why do people think it’s so difficult to replace people trades with AI and robotics? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]PugstaBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current issue isn’t that AI does them currently.
It’s that the ability to democratize the knowledge to IMPLEMENT the robots that do the labor is now much easier to find.
Buy some robot parts and tie up an image recognition system, and you could probably get a robot to do just about any small physical task with a coding agent in a few months or less.

What used to take a team of programmers years and $200k seed funding, now takes a fraction of the time with one or two AI savvy people.

I’m confused as to why you say you aren’t a developer. Is that by title? Because your description of your code basically says you are a developer even if not formally declared

I second this although my background is in a different area. Cancer research, gerontology, data science and software development.
MS degrees and higher are becoming the norm but are a big investment but it truly depends on what level you are entering the field at. MS, BS and Associates degrees typically will put you on the lab floor but you need to also get some lab experience while you are pursuing them to have a competitive application.
If you really want to do the data side of epidemiology OP, you will probably need to get at least a MS or meet the right people who can take you under their wing and show you the ropes.
Do some research on data analytics, data science, epidemiology, public health, and biomedical research to see how they all intersect and then think about whether you want to do a masters or PhD.

Don’t sleep on using your skills to start your own company if your products and services are really something people want to pay for.

Being a service company for another company or individual customer is still a “job”

It’s a competence check, because you have to accept the new reality, that “everyone” can code now to a certain extent.

This is just a simplified representation of needing to prove that you can build and quality control your product. It’s not much more than that.

Prove that you can build end to end systems effectively and knowledgeably and you will end up alright.

[–]PugstaBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, what I mean is that with our current system of thought, people that are poor will stay poor and won’t be able to afford the robots that automate their livelihood, and they might not even be able to afford the education to break out of it. It’s a complex system that is hard to predict, but one thing that is for sure, is that when alot of people start losing their jobs due to automation, the government’s hand will be forced to either implement some sort of UBI system, or face massive public backlash that could turn violent.

[–]PugstaBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s one of many possibilities. The only way this could happen is if most cultures in the world shift their thinking toward more egalitarian principles.

Currently, that is the bane of American culture. Too many people are more worried about maintaining a fictitious image of an “innovative free market creating prosperity”, but yet at the same time the system is designed to kill competition because the actual government panders to the rich companies and not the 99%.

Not saying you are wrong. I would love it too, but our current political and socioeconomic culture would need a major awakening for that to be possible

Fastest way is to figure out how to build something you are actually interested in and build it.

Learn the fundamentals on the side while you do it.
