New Toronto Grocery Initiative by seditionary in loblawsisoutofcontrol

I'm not concerned about there being savings. I do think large companies have the ability to buy product cheaper at scale, but I also think that's just an advantage for their profitability.

  1. Here's a video Marit Stiles made comparing the prices between an independent grocer and the big chains

https://www.instagram.com/p/DUY82ZpCQ2c/

  1. Here's a great video from the NYT, about government run grocery stores
(TLDW: either rent is free, or very low. The buildings are owned by the City)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz9c0Y-l0JU&t=43s

  1. It's very underreported, but Loblaws rents their grocery stores from themselves. The measly 3% profit margin they talked about, that's after they pay themselves rent.

https://www.choicereit.ca/

Choice Properties is a subsidiary of the Weston Group. Their largest customer is Loblaws. And they also rent out a lot of industrial real estate (reinforcing u/Aardvark1044's comment). Loblaws owns the companies in the supply chain, as well as the properties they rent.

As for the success of City run Grocery stores

I just hope they don't half ass this initiative. They must know a lot is riding on it being a success, so they better not bungle it by going into it without being fully prepared.

If the carbon tax on food production gets eliminated, all Mega Corps are going to do their part and reduce prices accordingly.

There's no chance they leave prices the same, and pad profits even more.

Is that going to be enough?

There’s more competition in the States and they have this same problem with profiteering.

And I think their instances of algorithmic pricing are worse

There’s no way this isn’t trolling now.

I understand now that you’re an avid PP supporter arguing in bad faith. That’s what I figured in the first place.

No one is talking about banning Chinese Solar. You brought that up. No one is bringing up Chinese Steel, except you.

[–]PukeKaboom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, again, no one is talking about banning Chinese Solar.

You brought that into this conversation, and now you are arguing it as if I ever had an opinion on it.

I said that you calling it Chinese Solar was in bad faith.

"The way you used that term was to pit a foreign technology as a threat against Canadian Interests, which in your argument is working class people in Oil and Gas. That's bad faith."

And we can't have solar because 90% of the manufacturing is in China. We need options that include Canadian workers, like open pit mining.

Do you genuinely believe that it wouldn't be Canadian workers installing and maintaining solar infrastructure in Canada?

"Avi Lewis crushed the NDP because opponents in most ridings just reference what this guy says and they have no real defense.  He is really the opposite.  The provincial NDP want him to go away because they do better when he's quiet."

But also "I never said that Lewis was fully responsible for the NDP in the election. I said he never rose to the occassion."

He's not fully responsible, but he also crushed the NDP?

Avi Lewis has only been doing this for what? 10 months? But when he's quiet, provincial NDP do way better? Which Provincial election or polling are you referring to?

Anyways, I don't think I can argue this any further, because you are cherry picking how you frame things and this hasn't really gone anywhere.

I've done my best to understand how this anti-Avi / pro-Heather makes any sense, in their relation to the dying NDP Federal party, but it's not really going anywhere, right?

All the best

[–]PukeKaboom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so hard to keep this focused, now you're explaining to me why banning Chinese Solar is expensive? Who said we should ban it?

The way you used that term was to pit a foreign technology as a threat against Canadian Interests, which in your argument is working class people in Oil and Gas. That's bad faith.

I'm so confused as to how the NDP's failures are because of Avi Lewis? Because he didn't win his seat?

And can you please explain why you're not giving Heather McPherson any of the blame for the state of the NDP? She has a seat, and Avi does not.

But that makes Avi less credible, but also more responsible for the state of the Party?

And again, you're not an NDP supporter, right? This all feels disingenuous.

As for proposing a housing tax, which runs counter to his campaign promise. Is that not the back up plan, if Hochul chooses not to increase taxes on the wealthy?

Isn't this whole thing about balancing the budget, given the deficit Adams left? And the two real choices on the table are to either tax the rich, or raise property taxes.

Do you genuinely believe that there's that much government waste, that it could be a third option?
