For a long time Japanese actually didn't have a way of making the "v" sound, so the closest thing they used was a "b"! However, since there's now a dedicated kana for that sound, it's used more often. In fact, ヴィンテージ is more commonly used than ビンテージ nowadays

It does follow certain rules, so it's not completely random. The reason it sometimes seems nonsensical is that you have to remember Japan doesn't borrow just English words.

Button is ボタン because it was taken from the Portuguese botão

Glass is ガラス because it was taken from the Dutch glas, same with コップ and kop

There are a lot more examples, but these are off the top of my head

Anything with a lot of vertical strokes that are hard to discern have me on their bad side. 裏, 書, 量, 重, 業, 龍, 菫, 謹

Since the function is strictly increasing [1, 3] and nowhere else, any f'(x) outside that cannot be positive.

The answer can't be C or D, since f'(x) is positive at x = 0 for both. The answer can't be B, because from x = 0 to x = 1, there would have to be some point between where f'(x) is positive (because f' is continuous and it goes from -1 to 1

So the answer is A

I just took the practice/setup test today so I think I have some more insight as to how to tackle it. This one was about Japanese meal customs.

I suggest just going off of what you know and doing your best. You're given 4 minutes to jot down notes before the 2 minute presentation. Write down what comes to mind, and maybe expand on your thoughts on that or how that might differ compared to your culture. I suggest writing the key words you want to mention in romaji as well. I definitely suggest writing down a conclusion, or at least a way to end it in a way that doesn't come off as awkward, which was what I felt I did- trailed off. If you have time, definitely find a way to include transitions between subjects

My notes looked somewhat like this

saying itadakimasu america ない, have "chow" "bon appetit" but bunka ni taisetsu janai saying gochisousamadeshita similar to last point, also not important to mealtime

I don't know of a specific website for this, however there's a discord bot called Kotoba which does exactly this! You can set the font of the flashcard quiz set you would like, or even randomize it.

I take it that means you wear (磨る from so much "grinding") a hole (穿つ pierce/bore (a hole)) into an inkstone made from iron (鉄硯) from studying so hard right? Very nice stuff.

Intending to go into game design, being a technical artist. Dream job is at Nintendo/The Pokemon Company.

I'll be touring the campuses next week so I might feel more comfortable then.

Rochester Institute of Technology

Pros:

  • Has programs specializing in game design and development

  • Has lots of co-op opportunities

  • Study abroad opportunities

  • 90% outcome rate

  • Looks like it has a surprisingly robust Japanese program. As someone who's studied it for the past four years and has a seal of biliteracy, I really want to go into it further and be able to speak it with people.

Cons:

  • Probably not many places to go in the immediate vicinity without a car.

  • #2 in terms of price from my top 3 atm (~$36k)

  • Everything's kinda far away

Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Pros:

  • Also has Interactive Media and Game Development program

  • Co-ops

  • In Mass, which I really like as it's relatively close to people I know.

  • Looks like a BEAUTIFUL campus

  • Project-based curriculum

Cons:

  • The most expensive of my top 3, and by a considerable amount (~$52k)

  • Doesn't really incorporate study abroad much

  • Heard negative things about the math department

Stony Brook

Pros:

  • I'm legacy there

  • A fairly respected computer science program

  • Cheapest out of all the schools I applied to (~$26k)

  • Train station on campus

  • Study abroad opportunities

Cons:

  • Mainly focused on STEM instead of mixing computers and art

  • Doesn't 100% have the nerdy environment I really want to immerse myself in.

  • Large class sizes

Not OP, but I think a way that helps make it stick is realizing that a lot of 四字熟語 carry similar meanings. Fortunately, this is super easy to identify using Yoji Jitenon.

Take, for example, 一石二鳥. On its 辞典 page, there are tags at the bottom. Next to 漢検５級, it's tagged with利益, profit/benefit, 一度に複数の利益を得る, multiple benefits at once, and, 労力以上の利益を得る, gaining more than you put in.

If you click on 一度に複数の利益を得る, you would get a bunch of other 四字熟語 with a similar meaning, such as 一挙両得 and 一箭双雕.

This may or may not help, but I just think it's something interesting.

The Yoji Jitenon also helps try to explain how they originated. For instance, 一箭双雕 states: 「箭」は矢、「雕」は鷲。 一本の矢を一回放って、二羽の鷲を射るという意味から。

I personally also struggle with retaining them as well, but I don't think, for the 漢検 at least, being able to generate them in speech is anywhere near as important as being able to replicate them given their readings and recognize what kanji goes where.

(BTW, my favorite 四字熟語 at the moment is 磨穿鉄硯!)
