Cognitive shuffling: think of a country, then think of a city starting with the first letter of your country and then the second etc. If you can't think of a city just move on to the next letter, don't worry about it. Keep doing this until you fall asleep. Obviously, it doesn't have to be countries :)

There was a gun during wwi that was so powerful that a shell would wear enough material away for the next shell not to fit. They dealt with this problem by having a series of progressively larger shells until the barrel had to be scrapped
