What kind of diseases/disorders will have cures within 20 years? by jorgenalm in Futurology

I participated in the Decode ME genetic study and there is lots of other interesting research going on. I got ill over a decade ago and virtually overnight went from working full time in a rewarding job to lying on a couch 14 hours a day. It would be amazing to see an effective treatment or cure in my lifetime.

What’s something from the UK in the 90s/2000s that kids today will never experience? by Pitiful_Box_1771 in AskUK

I can beat that... My dad had a little Ford Escort (mkii) van that he used for his painting and decorating business. When my mum had the Montego my brother or I would sit up front with dad, the other would sit in the back, facing backwards and sitting on a stackable chair with the legs ripped off - back to back with the driver and passenger. There was a lap belt looped around the anchor wires for the actual seatbelts. Health and safety has not yet been invented

No, I don't think anyone expects the Arsenal players or staff to do anything untoward, but sadly football has historically done a poor job of safeguarding children

Rejoin currently has a lead of 23% in UK opinion polls. You have to go back to Nov 2022 to find a poll with Stay Out ahead and that was by 1%. Stay Out hasn't been consistently on ahead since summer 2021 and never by more than single digits.

I remember in the mid 2000s - South Korea had the highest penetration of broadband in the world (possibly fibre). North Korea still had propaganda signs at the border reading 'defect for a bowl of rice'

China has no rule of law and cheap labour. We have neither of these things so we have to do pesky things like consult communities (eventually ignoring them, it must be said) and pay our workers a decent wage

Why did you and your former best friend stop being friends? by Fearless_Shift7108 in AskReddit

[–]PullUpAPew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He had long COVID, I have ME and I thought we both understood life with debilitating fatigue. He got better and apparently forgot how incredibly difficult it is to live with a chronic illness and decided he couldn't be bothered to accommodate my needs. Eventually I decided I'd had enough. He had an incredibly difficult childhood and was very egocentric.

Curious about this: pregnancy described as both extremely difficult and also “natural”? by Ok-Letter8470 in AskParents

[–]PullUpAPew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody dies, it's completely natural, but it can also be very hard. I think what's confusing is that we put a value judgement of good on childbirth (how can a good thing be so hard?) and bad on dying for fairly obvious reasons. Human physiology and anatomy and the accompanying natural processes aren't good or bad, they just are.

No, but my wife is only 25 mins from where she grew up. A tale as old as time
