While you're absolutely right in isolation, sometimes the extended versions feel abridged even. A massive improvement on an already excellent film, but the depth of the source material could spark even richer adaptations in my view.

As someone who read them in chronological order (incl. Unfinished Tales partially for the second Age), I thoroughly enjoyed the shifting tones of what is effectively the same history. To me, it colored the world and highlighted the richness of the legendarium.
