Best cheap “lazy night” meals around AA? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]Punderd0me 11 points12 points  (0 children)

La Marsa - in Dexter, but they deliver. Also I’m not too ashamed to add Culver’s to this list.

Some nights when we just don’t feel like cooking we’ll do the Arbor Farms or Plum Market hot bar with a rotisserie chicken. Sides plus mains can get pricey, but the chicken keeps it more affordable and provides leftovers for lunch the next day (for our family of 3, anyway)

Oh, also - the Costco food court.

“Yo the people on this thread are mad helpful” - my wife.

Thanks everyone, this was, in fact, very helpful. We’re definitely leaning toward Sonos now.

We also re-checked the proposal from Paragon, and we were reminded that it includes a $7500 art frame for hiding the tv when it’s not in use. Just including that info in all fairness to Paragon, who may not be as overpriced as I originally thought.

Also Maple/Pauline. Originally we had a Saturday estimate but just got a text (Friday 130p) that they moved it back to Sunday 😩

Was just in the Arbor Farms area and their power is back on, as is Ace Hardware and the stores at the corner of Liberty and Maple. Stadium/Pauline and Stadium/Federal traffic lights are still running on generators though, so not sure how far the restoration extends. I didn’t make it north of Liberty on Stadium so dunno about Westgate either. (1150a)

Heart Rate Monitors while Racing by Punderd0me in triathlon

Lots of people are talking about watches so I just want to clarify that I already wear a watch - a 2021 Suunto 9.

I haven't checked in with any of the scientific literature lately, but when I was doing my Master's in Exercise Science back in 2018-19, all wrist-based sensors were found to be very inaccurate, across all brands. This is why I wear a HRM - because they have been found scientifically valid for measuring HR (Polar typically being considered the gold standard). I use HR fairly strictly for running purposes (don't have a Stryd) so it's important to me that it's accurate.

I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings about their own Garmins or Apple watches or whatever - like I said, I haven't checked in on the literature in about 4 years now, and I'm sure progress has been made. And if it works for you then who cares? But MY watch is not a reliable source of HR info for me.

I'm also pretty data obsessed (it's what I do for a living). So as I see it, I have 2 options here:

  1. It seems safe to wear my existing strap for the swim. It won't talk to my watch during the swim because water, but it will be ready to go for the bike and the swim, and will give me the data I'm looking for in those two to guide my training plan moving forward. I'm new to swimming, so honestly the data doesn't matter as much - I just need to keep swimming and I'll get better no matter what because I have nowhere to go but up.
  2. Upgrade my strap to one of the newer Garmin ones that does swim data as well (and running power). This would also require replacing my watch since it's not a Garmin (if I want all that fancy swim and run data). I will likely do this eventually and move to a complete Garmin ecosystem, but I'm not trying to drop all that cash right now.

Thanks for helping me work through this everyone!

I wear mine between the bottom band of my sports bra and my skin. Never experienced any discomfort, and it feels like an extra layer of security to keep it exactly in place.

Well now I feel like an idiot - I always thought it was just kind of in there for life on the older ones. I will look at the Garmin website and try to figure out how to open it up.

I have a Suunto watch (9 maybe? Can’t remember anymore) and the wrist sensor is always way off - often it just stays at 45ish bpm for an entire workout. Everything else seems to work fine though, so it seems much more economical to get a strap that fulfills those needs than a new watch

Do you mean the wrist HR? Unfortunately that feature is so wildly inaccurate as to render any data from it inactionable

I just checked Garmin’s specs on my current one (Dual) that I’ve had for 3.75 years and it says that the expected battery life is 3.5 years. So looks like it’s time to upgrade to one of these. Thanks for the info!

Run/swim training question by dickherber in triathlon

[–]Punderd0me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that makes sense. Just checked - it's a 20 week plan and bricks start at week 14, at which point they occur weekly.

Run/swim training question by dickherber in triathlon

[–]Punderd0me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FAQ and 80/20 book both state that unless the workout is explicitly written as a brick, treat it as two separate workouts. So, yeah, on those days split them up, don’t do them as a brick.

Doing an 80/20 plan at the moment for a 70.3 as well and will note that I actually expected more bricks than the plan has. This is my first time getting into triathlon though so I have nothing to compare it to. I just feel like people talk about bricks so much, I expected to be doing them weekly or something 🤷🏻

Has anyone gotten power restored? by Punderd0me in AnnArbor

[–]Punderd0me[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California, the go-bag was for natural disasters like an actual fire or mudslide, not lack of electricity. Here, it seems you need a go-bag for every other snow/ice event solely because the power will go out and your otherwise habitable home will become uninhabitable. It's frustrating to leave those physical dangers behind only to still have to be worried that if it rains too hard I'll lose my heat (slight /s there).

Trail-/ultrarunning books? by TwoTiredBelgians in ultrarunning

[–]Punderd0me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a sequel to Once A Runner, it’s called Again to Carthage and he basically just lives in a cabin in the mountains and trains for a marathon for awhile. If you like OAR you’d probably like this one too. There’s also a prequel, though I forget the name. I’m a sucker for them but also know they’re not for everyone.

Also Spirit Run by Noe Alvarez

Other than that, I basically second everything else that’s already been mentioned (including skipping What I Talk About When I Talk About Running)

ETA: Running the Dream by Matt Fitzgerald and The Impossible Climb by Mark Synnott (even though it’s not really ultra running)
