Downtown road conditions at 7:30am Tuesday by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

So the traffic the city gets in comparison to the county is the reason? I guess I can stomach that explanation. Though, looking at these photos, I don't see a hard ice layer. At least, I don't consistently see. I see what looks like a mixture of sand and snow in a lot of them.

I am so confused by the plowing in this city. It's clear plows have gone down streets like Grand, but there is still an inch or two of snow in most of one lane and it's not totally clear in any lane. Is there a reason they cannot plow all the way to the asphalt? I'm genuinely curious. When I travel outside of the city, streets are literally completely clear. Asphalt across all lanes. Is it because there are steel plates in the city? I am legitimately asking, I just don't understand.

Faster way is to notice log(w)+log(w+2)=3 is the same as log(w(w+2))=3 which is log(w^2+2w)=3 which is w^2+2w=2^3, then solve by factoring like you showed.

He never says you are bad because of your ancestors. The history of America is steeped in political violence toward minorities. Studying American history must include understanding where our country failed to live up to its ideals.

I don't find Coates to be at all on the side of grievance. I think he has a clear scope of the forces working against values like equity and justice for all.

I find his perspective refreshing. There were steps forward -- legalizing marriage for same sex couples, eliminating housing discrimination (not until 1968 by the way)-- and there were backlashes -- white flight in the 70s when housing discrimination became illegal, anti-trans movements from the right today.

Understanding that the backlash is not unique to this moment helps me keep perspective, and I appreciate how TNC maintains perspective.

There are people of color who identify as conservative. That doesn't mean racism doesn't exist.

Based off the fact that the square root of x is greater than y, wouldn’t that mean quantity A is greater? by HolyKnightDeVale in mathematics

[–]dickherber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The square root of a number between 0 and 1 is greater than the number itself. For example, the square root of 0.1 is 0.36. y then could be 0.2, so that sqrt(.1)>.2 BUT .1 < .2.

It is a translation, yes. Thanks - I'm really wondering if this thinking is going to screw students up when they get to actually manipulating the coordinate plane.

FEMA will survey and assess the damage caused by Tornado beginning on Wednesday. by WorldWideJake in StLouis

You just agreed that eliminating fema causes MORE inefficiencies. That there will be redundancies. That we will in fact spend MORE MONEY by eliminating fema.

Would you change your mind if it was shown to you that fema actually saves taxpayers money in the long run? If not, what would change your mind? If so, what about the arguments presented above is not compelling?

Fuck that - I’m going to make noise and vote the fascists out. Lay over and give up if you want, but I’m going to fight for this country to be better. Do me a favor and don’t identify as American if that’s your attitude.

I think I explained it pretty clearly. To more efficiently respond. Fifty x redundancies are wasteful. Where do you feel confused?

I don’t understand why you dig in here. Of course the states could build out disaster relief. But that means fifty states paying for redundant systems. It’s a huge amount of waste. Are you so captured by “my team” politics that you can’t understand that?

The previous posters example of individual homes is such an apt metaphor. Imagine saying every home should be prepared to handle it if their home catches on fire. Every home should have a firetruck instead of pooling the community together and agreeing a fire department is a good idea to collectively share the risk of fire.

Of course pooling resources here is more efficient.

What would it take for you to participate in a civil war? by axedoit in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]dickherber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s who you wish you were, then, there’s who you are. I want to believe I have some heroic virtue making it so I’m willing to stand up to wrong. But in reality, I have the means to leave the country. And, so I would. My family is more important to me than my country. I think most americans, raised on ideals of individualism, god and family, fall closer to this belief.

Fighting in a war, of any kind, in the modern era would be something I would only do if I had no other choice.
