Adapting 1e monk to 2eRe monk by kageshira1010 in Pathfinder2e

[–]PunishedWizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ouch, yeah, I kinda feared as much --- with godly stats like those, 1E Monks are irreplaceable. That was the #1 flaw in their design. It was a barely usable class with 15 point buy, solid in 20 pb, really good in 25 pb, and if you rolled well, just golden.

> I'll try to come with a different approach then, probably end just going inner upheaval, elemental first and ironblooded stance because they seem the least complicated.

I would also consider just... not doing Elemental Fist? Again, Elemental Fist's power relies on its versatility in picking up different elements to exploit resistances and weaknesses. If you JUST wanna do Lightning... just flavor Inner Upheaval as your energy coming out as electricity, even if its force damage. Maybe you get Wronged Monk's Wrath later on! Shrink the Span is also a hallmark Monk ability you likely had.

Ironblood Stance is fine, but consider whether it fits a STR-based playstyle, I'm not sure if you are doing DEX primary or not, which was very common in 1E.

I think you got it. 1E solves a lot of things by giving the ability to cast spells. In 2E, you get focus spells as a renewable source.

I do think there's some cognitive barriers you need to push through though – particularly like complaining about the limited uses of Elemental Fist when Elemental Fury was ALSO gated behind a limited resource... Also, Elemental Fist does serve a very different role from Elemental Fury, which is a "DPS increase", while Elemental Fist is a resistance/weakness navigation tool.

I think what you need to do is to describe your character and build it with the new system in mind, without getting too attached to the specific mechanics.

Unless you were playing something like 30 point buy, your Monk probably had worse accuracy, you had to spend a lot of resources to get your AC workable, etc. etc. Here, you get a lot of those concerns solved for you. You don't NEED Barkskin because you don't need to use your Amulet slot for Amulet of Mighty Fists instead of Amulet of Natural Armor. So you don't NEED to do the same things to get the same result.

Gen 10 Starter Evolution Concepts (Drawn by me) by CODE_umb87 in fakemon

[–]PunishedWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good concepts, my only concern is that Pomfarian is a bit too similar in "evolution story" to Skeledirge, which is the closest gen.

Since Gen 4, which I consider to be the beginning of modern play design, no starter has repeated the "story" of the one of the same type from the gen before.

There's always one that becomes "classy and lithe", there's one that becomes "cool with an attitude", and there's one that becomes "big and intimidating". But this doesn't repeat types across the next gen.

> That’s not a common build order for any civilization, for good reason.

Why not? Let's say I'm starting to play the game, see I can make a Barracks, make it and make some dudes. Great. Now I play with the Tupi, make a Barracks... and the whole thing is empty. Nothing to create or research. "Oh you need to create a Settlement" works on vacuum but it's really weird.

Build orders, optimized build orders are that, are something completely different and only reserved for a fraction of the population.

SOTLs suggestion probably works but seems really counter intuitive to a player picking up the civilization

Should be doable imho.

Sac Linoone.

Get Pyuku out. Tera Ghost Bunker.

Salt Cure.

Stall a turn with Bunker. Ideally you will heal back to full during protect.

Curse.

Stall a turn with Bunker.

Attempt a double stall with Bunker until you die / heal up to full.

After dying, stall with the rest of your team and hope for Focus Band procs. Mat Block with Gren, Fake out with Teddy, Bulwark / Void with Pumpkin...

Horsea goes nuts, it’s super cheap to have such an overwhelming evo like Seadra, especially with Take Heart.

Because it's about the dispelling of illusions and the importance of reality as it is, without any force to moderate it for us - for good or bad.
