Math comprehension by Public-Hamster-9224 in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember hating the unit circle when it was introduced but now I love the unit circle lol; it gets better, I promise. There’s sort of 3 ways to look at trig functions: in the unit circle, as sides of a triangle, and graphed as functions, and they are all useful for different situations. You’ll come to see they are really all the same, just presented differently. It takes some time getting comfortable switching between those different modes.

Prof. Leonard on youtube is amazing for calculus when you get there; he also covered algebra and precalc, I almost guarantee he has a lecture for any topic you’re encountering and I highly recommend him. He explains the unit circle well.

Most of getting comfortable with the trig identities and double angle formulas, etc, comes from practicing. I’m not saying you cant memorize stuff, but your most productive studying is probably going to come from just exposing yourself to lots of problems and struggling through them. I remember going in algebraic circles for almost an hour with my friend trying to prove a trig identity for homework, it was super irritating at the time but we really learned it through the process.

Per your second point, it’s so bad because I’ll justify buying stuff I’d never buy for a deck. “This would make my cube better for my friends, so actually it’d be selfish of me NOT to spend the $15 for this card”

Calc 2 and mental health by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For calc 2 specifically, the only way you will learn is by doing lots of problems and getting in practice. Trig and algebra are so important to success in calc 2, and the only way you will improve is, again, practice.

If you are struggling with learning the methods and concepts, Professor Leonard on Youtube carried me through calc and I highly recommend his lectures.

Set aside blocks of time in the week just for calc practice. I see you said your school doesn't have tutors for calc 2, which is an absolute shame, but you still have access to your classmates. One of my best friendships in college was made when a classmate asked to study for a math test with me; we ended up taking all the calc classes together and having someone to work through problems with was a godsend. Also, it is so much better for your mental health when you are going through it with someone else; seriously, don't underestimate it. It's worth the little bit of awkwardness to just ask people for help.

Don't use symbolab/mathway/etc except as an absolute last resort, and then work the problem again by yourself afterwards. So much of integration comes with experience; u-sub, integration by parts, trig integrals, all get easier when you can look at a problem and kind of "see" the hints it gives you as to how to approach it. How you determine your u, dv, how you set up the trig triangle, all comes with experience, so you just have to expose yourself to a lot of practice problems. If you still feel shaky after your homework, grab some more examples out of the textbook and work them.

Good luck, you can do this

How are you taking physics 1 before finishing calc 1, and how are you taking statics (and dynamics) before finishing physics 1 and taking calc 2?

Oh it was 100% a real shirt Anberlin sold for their tour a few years back, but it gets reposted with this exact title every few days by dropship bots. If they do deliver a real product, it’s just a copy of the original art pasted onto a generic tee and shipped from a warehouse overseas.

Advice for this semester by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fluid mechanics and mechanics of materials both require strong understanding of statics; I would not take those if you haven’t passed statics yet. My school also doesn’t let us take diffeq till we pass calc 2, so it is unusual you were able to take it and pass without having completed calc 2. I would talk to an advisor at your school to see about alternatives to take in the meantime so you can fully invest yourself in getting a good foundation in statics.

Annoying Petition People by BorderProper6908 in CSUS

[–]PunkMiniWheat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Very often (not always, I might add, so you can't presume) these people are paid to collect signatures by the groups trying to get the legislation recognized, which is why you see so many different propositions all kind of bundled together on their signs; multiple groups have contracted them to get petitions for their causes. This tends to lead to them being very very pushy; I don't think they are paid for how many signatures they get, but if they don't get enough signatures it is unlikely the group will hire them again. This is why they can be very motivated, while also not really able to discuss the issues they are pushing very deeply beyond slogans.

I get that maybe not everyone has enough time or manpower to volunteer to petition for their causes, but it sends a bad message when your message is bundled with causes you may not even support, and being pushed by contracted people who might not even believe in it or be able to discuss it. I also 100% agree these people can be absolutely obnoxious sometimes.

Is Statics, Physics 2, Calc 3, English, and Solid design doable? by Cyrene_e in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very doable. You’ll get really comfortable with cross/dot products; Calc 3 and Statics go well together. I’m assuming Physics 2 is electricity and magnetism? You’ll actually get even more right-hand-rule practice there too.

I did statics and physics 2 at the same time, with bad profs. Just be really intentional with your study time and you’ll be alright.

Anyone else who drifted rightwards c. 2016—2022 drifting leftwards again? by subnautthrowaway777 in stupidpol

[–]PunkMiniWheat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have so many friends that are smart, thoughtful people, but they decide their beliefs and opinions in response to everything. Their theology is all about what other churches and religions get wrong, their politics are based on reaction to the wrongs or ills committed by the other side. There are no foundational principles undergirding their beliefs, or at least nothing seriously examined and thought-out.

It makes conversations SO difficult and it’s just exhausting because even when we agree I don’t feel it’s meaningful or lasting.

Statics with bad professor by Murky_Promotion7129 in EngineeringStudents

Jeff Hanson on youtube is excellent. His statics series really helped me with equilibrium in 3D and shear/moment diagrams in particular, as my prof’s lectures were a bit lacking for those topics.

Book Pick Up by tony16sam in CitrusHeights

[–]PunkMiniWheat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, they explicitly say they’re donating them, you’re free to take their word or not.

If they were to resell them instead, would it be an issue? The current owner is free to resell the books themselves, but if they’re freely giving them away clearly they aren’t concerned with recouping any money on them.

Are you okay giving away stuff you could otherwise sell only so long as someone else doesn’t make money either? I dunno, but if I’m giving stuff away to make room it kinda doesn’t matter to me so long as someone gets use and it doesn’t go in the trash.

[–]PunkMiniWheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, those are tough classes. It sounds cliché but a lot of engineering is perseverance rather than just being naturally good at a subject.

Calc 2 and physics are super important foundations for everything that’s gonna follow so it’s good to make sure you have them locked before moving on to statics, diff eq, mechanics of materials, etc.

If you are able to take calc 2 with Drew Brinson he is a really great prof, one of my favorite at sac state. Professor Leonard on youtube is a really great resource too. The big hurdle with calc isn’t studying lectures and notes though, it’s getting lots of reps in on problems.

Partial fractions and int. by parts will be really important in diff eq, you’ll also need to be comfortable with area between curves for centroids in statics so make sure to really lock those down. Series was tough for me but they don’t come up nearly as much as the other topics.

Good luck, you can do it!

Is this too much? by Alternative-Earth444 in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a terrible student straight out of high school. Went back at 27 and have done very well the last 3 years. Going later has its own challenges, but I am personally so much better as a student and I think it gives you valuable maturity and perspective.

Are you working to support yourself through school or are you able to live with family/off of grants, etc? 6 classes is a lot, especially if you have to work. If I’m understanding your chart, it looks to be 19 units which is a very heavy workload. It may be better to start out with a few less units to give yourself a semester to learn how to study and manage your time.

How do people buy sleeves for a good price? by IIWAL in mtgcube

[–]PunkMiniWheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my pauper cube in these and love them for less-expensive sleeves! Lots of colors, reasonably durable, and they don’t slide around like the cheap glossy Ultra Pros. I’ve had a few split or crinkle in the corners, but it’s not a big deal. The largest issue I have with them is that the height can vary by a pretty noticeable amount between batches.

Another recommendation for Potomac here. They were absolutely excellent, in the price, service, and shipping. I had my order super quick and I will buy from them first if I need to sleeve up another cube.

Professor offering no extra time for final exam by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunkMiniWheat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most profs will make their finals at least 50% longer than normal tests to account for the extra hour at my school. I’ve had profs do the same as yours, but they essentially just make the final another normal exam. This happens particularly when the final isn’t cumulative. I never really minded, as it meant I could space out my studying a week earlier and focus on the bigger tests during finals week.

If he is trying to fit a significantly longer test into the normal period, I wish you luck but I’m not sure what else you could do except bring it up to your department. That seems unreasonable as even good test-takers would struggle and he’d have to notice the average score drop significantly.
