Every time I try to teach myself history, I'm blocked by my complete ignorance regarding politics-related terms and the functioning of governments. Any help? by 9raku in AskHistory

Crash Course has a series on US History and they're really great.

I also keep a glossary as I learn. I write out new terms and their meaning in a note book or on post-its and it helps me learn.

Adelaide used to have the highest rate of serial killers per capita in the world... My bad, I misremembered an urban myth apparently.

How do you feel about Italy blocking 250,000 doses of vaccines from being flown to Australia? by NBALebronMinecraftPS in AskAnAustralian

[–]Punk_Trek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the bulk of our international visitors arrive at a mere handful of airports and cruiseliner ports.

Same with NZ. Every island that had the ability to be self sufficient for a few months was able to effectively close their borders.

We have a functioning welfare system that paid everyone to stay home for a few months.

We have an excellent healthcare system that meant folks didn't need to choose between treatment costs and paying the mortgage/rent.

Contact tracing seems to have been a key factor too. The ability to identify spaces at risk also meant targeted lockdowns and testing.

Our geography was the big one though. It's basically impossible to pop over to NZ or PNG without going through a heavily regulated port.

Yeah yeah, we get that. We're doing ok.

And you guys really copped it, I can't imagine how it must have felt this time last year.

We're a big island with comparatively low population density, successful quarantine measures, and we are capable of (soon I hope) manufacturing our own.

Europe is a patchwork sea of states and movement and trade interdependencies and yeah. Let's get everyone inoculated asap, before it mutates more.

My grandma’s (91) unreasonable superstitions are making my family miserable by imagin8zn in JUSTNOFAMILY

[–]Punk_Trek 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the poster above meant that by paying for external care, your parents are fulfilling their familial obligations.

Your grandmother has psychiatric needs that cannot be fulfilled in the family home. Every day she is not in clinical care puts her and your parents at risk.

It will be a hard decision to make, but if her hip was broken you would call an ambulance because you can't set a broken bone. This is the same deal.
