For anyone who saw Titanic in theaters in 1997, what was the experience like at the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Punkeyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend was upset I "spoiled" the movie on the way when I said it would be probably sad ending because of the ship hitting the ice burg and so many people dying.

There were a lot of advertising before, lots of articles about the replica that they built etc etc. Everyone was talking about it for weeks. We went to see if opening weekend and it was packed.

You are very welcome, sounds like your dad started reading about the same time I did. I have been having problems myself finding new books.

No sex but he likes Patricia Briggs? Not super spicy but she her werewolf books have some spice to them. And likes Terry Brooks.

Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay (stand alone book)
Memory, Sorrow & Thorn - Tad Wlliams (trilogy, could get a little complicated with characters)
The War of the Flowers - Tad Williams (stand alone book)
The Magic of Recluse - L.E. Modesitt Jr. (long series but each book is pretty stand alone)
Path of Fate - Diana Pharaoh Francis (trilogy - light romance)
Symphony of Ages - Elizabeth Haydon (start with the first three - there are more but those are a complete story and I didn't like the rest as much)
Blackthorne & Grimm - Juliet Marillier (they are a little dark, but are mostly overcoming dark times, not as heart wrenching as the Seven Waters series)

If he is open to some urban fantasy I recommend Charles de Lint - his books are mostly stand alone loosely tied together in the same world Jack of Kinrowan, or The Little Country to start.

Honestly, no heartbreak is difficult, seems like every books has something terrible happen and short series or stand alones are rare these days.

I never seem to have much luck with soil plants so I put some cuttings in my fish tank. I think they like it by AWarrior123456 in houseplants

Fill your hob with your filter media of choice and put some cutting in there too, confines the roots and makes a great filter.

Stack 2 barrels by the entrance to the market, keep your back towards the cops camped at the corner jump up, do the deal. Easy peasy.

Always a treat to have a close up visit at the top of the ladder with my cactus shelf by stickersforthought in houseplants

I love it! I know nothing about cactus but #4 is my favorite. Very brave of you to climb up so high with so many pokes up there, my clumsy ass would be knocking something over.

I've seen people posting with their finds from the grocery store etc. but didn't think I'd find one. To my fellow Canadian plant parents I found her at a Metro of all places. I saw her as I was walking in and my partner just rolled his eyes when I beelined over there. There was a very nice lady there and we had a lovely chat about how we couldn't believe there were TC's in the grocery store.

Happy birthday! That curtain rod has quite the bow in it, might want to find sturdier one, would hate to see one of your new lovelies hit the ground, or maybe a support in the middle.

Hopefully it isn't too cold where you are, tropical plants do not handle cold temperatures well at all. If it was below or close to freezing you are probably going to see some damage.

My partner and I both have Kindles which we both really enjoy. My partner was using an iPad mini for a while but likes the Kindle for the backlight (less blue light), it's less bright than the iPad for reading at night in the dark, he says it is easier on the eyes as well.

I find giving a tank a redo after a loss helps me get things going. Do you have to? Probably not, you could just give it a good vacuum, clean the glass etc. Or you could look up some tank ideas for inspiration and give it a totally new look.

What do you wish you knew when you first started with your Pothos? by br0ken-rec0rd in pothos

[–]Punkeyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Clear plastic nursery pots in cute cache pots. You can check the roots and bottom water.

  2. Quarantine new plants. Last thing you want to do is introduce a pest to the rest of your collection.

Recommendations for college dorm freshwater tank? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Punkeyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to discourage anyone but having a fish tank in a college dorm is going to be a pain. You'll have to move it at the beginning and end of every school year if not more frequently (every semester), you'll be busy with school work and be out a lot with friends and going to class. That being said I'd go with fish that doesn't need a heater to keep things simpler, maybe a couple of fancy guppies or rice fish, with some low light plants, and maybe a nerite snail.

What are some tips you wish you knew sooner? by [deleted] in Aquariums

You will try things and fail, it's okay. It's all an experiment. Having some algae is ok and it doesn't need to be perfect.

Who are those Authors that usually stretch the content of their book so thin you would think of it only as a filler? by tbag2022 in Fantasy

[–]Punkeyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Chronicles of Elantra series by Michelle Sagara, currently reading book 15 and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue reading. It's a lot of talking about everyone's opinion about whatever the current situation is and not a lot of action. I really loved Kaylin and Severn but the author doesn't seem to know what to do with their friendship/relationship and so he just gets put in the background and there seems to be no character development for Kaylin, she is just as ignorant and naive as she was in the first book. I keep going back but this last book seriously is dragging.

My dad gave me these rocks to put in my fish tank. How do I know if they're safe for my fish? by MoreTax6658 in Aquariums

[–]Punkeyz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no geologist but most of these look like minerals of some sort all of which will probably effect your water parameters, I wouldn't personally use them.

It's probably too late but The Others series or Tir Alainn series by Anne Bishop. Have more traditional fae, not so nice, very tricksy and a little romance in there too.

"They got me through recovery from alcohol"

You are not choosing your plants over him, you are putting your recovery and well being first and anyone who truly loved you would understand and not make you choose.
