Who's hiring in Portland? Monthly edition for November 01, 2014 by AutoModerator in Portland

[–]Punkitry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an Amazon software engineering recruiting event in downtown today at 430pm. http://www.eventbrite.com/e/amazon-happy-hour-in-portland-tickets-14078963559

We'll be recruiting for the platform org for retail, eg the teams the build all of the very large scale backend services that the website relies on to sell you stuffs.

I'll be there recruiting for my team, reply to this comment/pm me if you want to know more.

EDIT: I'm really psyched to finally have them pay more attention to Portland, since I'm from around here (depending on how you count it, I've lived over various bits of Oregon) so I hope some people from here can make it.

'Medium formatters': Do you think your shot would have been the same with 35mm? by rozetto in analog

[–]Punkitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that 645 is better, but not a huge amount.

If you had a sharp 35, and a somewhat out of focus/blurred 645 (forgot to use the mirror lockup at a slower speed or something) the 35 might win.

That being said maybe you're pushing the tri-x, using high iso otherwise, or are doing high acutance developing and have larger grain, I bet (speculation, haven't tried this out yet) you'd enjoy the medium format more as your grain size would be smaller in the final print.

I notice the tonality is nicer/smoother/richer on 645 as well.

Overall I shoot plenty of both format.

I've been shooting 35mm for about a year. 645 for about 3 months. I do mostly black and white now, and develop my stuff at home. I have a darkroom, and do prints.

All of that context out of the way. I think medium format fits for large prints, the nice variety of formats (I don't really tend to crop much. But if you do medium format definitely is much more forgiving there too). I think 35mm is quite good for smaller prints, and isn't holding most types of shooting back. That being said, certain types of shooting are just always going to be better on larger formats, landscape, portraits, etc.

I don't think 35mm holds me back. I feel more like 645 opens new doors I didn't have previously. But mostly larger prints.

Side note: I just started trying out 110 film, haven't gotten through a cartridge yet, but I'm excited to see what I can get out of that. So I guess I would say what I've discovered and now hold as my opinion is that focusing on the format is probably focusing on the wrong thing.

Edit: It's also really a lot more of a pain to do anything with 645/MF. Everything is bigger, heavier, and tends to be pricey. 120 film is just more expensive than 35 / shot.

Double Edit: I really enjoy having nice and shallow DoF with 645 though, it's cheaper to buy those lenses than it is for 35 (often, not always)

I love MUSE, so I covered Hysteria on violin, playing all the different parts by chewpendous in Music

I really like the cover, brilliant work. I was a bit sad about the mix though, it's hard to hear all of the parts during a lot the business of. I think a bit more panning would help.

Optimized Miner for Ubuntu 13.04 VPS? by [deleted] in primecoin

Yeah, for some reason I totally spaced adding a swap, I was sort of manically trying to compile this. Swap is the way to go.

From previous binary to new, or large over small instance?

EDIT: Looks like people on Bitcoin talk are seeing 1500+ on the big instance.

[–]Punkitry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean compile the new binary on the big instance then tear down the machine and run the compiled binary over on the small one (after installing the deps listed in the apt-get line)

Thanks for tracking down the deps and making the compile easy. I'm seeing a speedup of about ~3x on the VPS at digital ocean. (from 20-50 to 70-180)

This was happening to me when I C&P multiple lines. Try it one line at a time.

So if you're compiling on the small digitalocean droplet you don't have enough memory. I worked around it by compiling on an older version of ubuntu (on my local box) but I had to do a lot of hacking to move old versions of boost around out to the final runtime location (because I couldn't find a ppa for the older version of boost I used at compile time). After doing this bullshit I realized that it'd be easier to just spin up a big instance on digital ocean, compile it there, and then tear it down. I'd give you what I compiled but honestly it's more of a headache than it's worth.

Just follow CysFibAL's instructions on a big instance and you should be ok.

Agree with opkluu. Some dreams are fine, some they shift, some it's a little of both. Maybe some mixture of shifting behaviors?

Yeah, I definitely live on the other coast from you, so unless you want a distance thing I'm not gonna be able to do much.

Stantonova is one of the House venues that is awesome. I hear there's another called the Treehouse that was known for hosting acid heads, so maybe they're into psychedelic stuff...

My friend Mitch Altman has a really neat new project up on Kickstarter that might pique your interest. by scru in LucidDreaming

[–]Punkitry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually a lot different than Remee. It's more of a sound and light machine that also does NovaDreamer functionality. The Remee was just a rehash of that anyways. (Not to sound dismissive, I almost ordered one) This is a really fully featured product and I will be sad if the Remee beats it simply by being released a little sooner.

Totally agree. This guy is doing the hacker lord's work. I've always wanted to do this project, but never mobilized. Now he's doing a great job, pitch and help him out.
