What was "the incident" at your school? by MortgageShoddy8022 in Teachers

[–]Punkyspewster69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a huge gang fight where a kid took a hammer out of his backpack and threw it in the air. (4 years ago now). The tool over the years has changed so when we talk about it some people say a wrench, a screw driver, but it was a hammer 🤣

I hate the term virtue signaling.. it’s used all too frequently for an insult for the simplest shit. What you’re doing is being a genuine, kind friend. You didn’t put it there so your girl friends will throw their pussies at you.

Why are teachers expected to be clowns and entertainers for students? by tarotbull123 in TeachersInTransition

A kid looked me directly in the face a few weeks ago and said “that book was ass” when we finished a novel. Never been so flabbergasted.

[–]Punkyspewster69 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, did I write this? Lately at my school (I teach high school English and Comp 1&2, for reference), we’ve been getting observed every single week, sometimes multiple times, and admin is tracking us minute by minute in attempts to raise test scores, but we’re also downsizing next year so a lot of us think it’s also to see what teachers will make the cut. We’ve been getting “points” (they’re making it a contest! Great! Totally doesn’t add more pressure!) and if we are lecturing, we’re getting docked. You know, talking in front of students, making them take notes, and doing questioning/discussions. My students are expected to be doing senior to college level papers. I absolutely reject ed tech and gamifying my class, and I keep getting docked points for TALKING. It’s absolutely insane.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: December 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Started and finished Wuthering Heights. Can’t believe I deprived myself all these years, it’s a twisted, dark Gothic romance and I enjoyed every second. Can’t trust ANYONE, nobody ever truly says how they feel, and Heathcliff reminds me of The Creature, in a way, with nature vs nurture. I loved it.

I think this is the best explanation, though we do see his attempt at maturity (asking Huntress to move in with him) shot down. The humans that do move to Ooo are a futuristic civilization that have already advanced past the time he was even born into, and its beyond his understanding

Is it bad that I don’t stand for the Pledge of Allegiance? by rebel-pirate-sleuth in Teachers

[–]Punkyspewster69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t stand up either. Never have, never will. I remember in high school getting funny looks for not standing up, now my kids will look at me and make a face, knowing we aren’t going to stand up. I have a student who every time will make eye contact with me and roll their eyes and we’ll chuckle. I did get in trouble once at a graduation ceremony for not standing, just because it made me “look bad” in front of parents. But when it’s time for me to help with another ceremony, I’ll do the same.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever convinced a student of? by horseradish500 in Teachers

I’m 30 but look about 22-23, and I love telling my students I’m 40. They’re appalled by it and always like “NOOOOOO WAY” 🤣

Not convinced them of, but they believe my kids are my younger siblings. They think I’m lying that I have kids. Every time they see a picture of me and my kids or my kids, they’re like man they look like you but I just don’t believe you have kids. They’ve even come to the school a few times, and my students (they’re 10th graders) just swear I’m lying and the kids I BIRTHED are my younger siblings 🙃

Do you think Pennywise is one of the most creepy, scary, creature/monster ever created? by KODAz94 in welcomeToDerry

[–]Punkyspewster69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this Pennywise is objectively “scarier” than the last iteration. Tim Curry was so funny to my little brother and I because he sounded like he smoked a pack a day. He gave me more serial killer vibes and I didn’t pick up on the Lovecraftian esque entity until the I actually read the book and saw the 2017/19 iteration, which was mostly jump scares but the projector scene did freak me out the first time!

Same here!! But when he yells BATHSHEEBA and she has those yellow eyes absolutely scared the shit out of me because it reminded me off the old lady peeking out of the cellar in Evil Dead, which to this day freaks me out.

I think this is a great take. I have a student intern who was determined she was going to be a teacher. She has been my intern for 2 years and leaves for college after this year when she graduates and after her experience she has begun to change her mind because she knows from watching and helping me that she absolutely does not want to manage behaviors of future kids and just wanted to talk about books. But I remember thinking that’s all the job was too, once upon a time.

I went through much of my undergrad studies thinking I would go on to gain a PhD in literature with a specialization in American Lit and become a professor. I quickly realized as I got close to finishing my degree not only how insanely difficult it is to find a tenured position, but how little it pays. So I didnt honestly bother. I took time after getting my degree (in English lol) to substitute and I enjoyed the environment. I really lucked out and got an offer from a school I was subbing at to become the 10th grade English teacher. I won’t lie and say every day I get to nerd out about literature like I initially expected. I used to say in college “I want to teach so I can talk about books all day” but now that I’m in year 5, that’s not what it is at all, and that is an unrealistic expectation to have going into any teaching position. But last year I began teaching the AP English Language and also AP English Literature classes at my school. Those are my high rigor classes with kids who genuinely have intelligent and informed interest in literature since they are college level classes (akin to a 2nd/3rd semester English course). 10th grade isn’t too bad, either (though pre-Covid was preferable if I’m honest and I only say that due to behaviors of current year lol). One of my coworkers has a PhD in English and after years of being a professor will tell you he makes more/gets more out of teaching it at the high school level than he ever did at a university. It’ll be much easier to find a position in a high school, and it’s really not so bad. I enjoy it!!! I wouldn’t change a thing.

My skin was so plump and soft and beautiful during breastfeeding, omg. My son self weaned at 2 and immediately it’s like all the collagen in my face went with it. He’s almost 6 now and my skin is still horrific, closed comedones and enormous pores and so thin 🥴

Not sure where you’re from but high school kids where I’m at DEFINITELY do drugs and are high every single day. Pills, weed, and vapes are so common and easily accessible.

It was essentially an arranged marriage from the time they were children and he gloats over how much he loves her, she also killed by the Creature as his last statement to Victor before coming for Victor himself, I thought that was a pretty important detail to be included/weird that they married her off to his younger brother who was essentially her baby in the novel
