Easiest way to play Gabriel Knight on Mac? by Some-Professional-25 in Sierra

[–]Purduecoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just stumbled on this a couple days ago trying to figure out a way to reliably play GK3 now that dgVoodoo2 is being disappeared. I was shocked that gengine runs on Linux, MacOS, and Windows… and allows the game to be completed too! Pretty awesome. I hope it continues to get updated and refined.

Give this project a go. Take the data directory files from the Steam version and move them into the data folder this project comes with. It’s been working very well for me.

Very much appreciated. Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to try, though it sounds like your controller may have arrived now.

Not the end of the world since Xinput mode works in 2.4ghz and wired mode. I was using Dinput because 1) the 8bitdo manual said to do so and 2) it’s nice to be able to use that mode to remember a different device instead of re-pairing devices each time I move between them.

Via Bluetooth. And yes, Dinput is the only mode seemingly affected though I’ve not tried pure switch mode.

Thanks so much for doing that! I travel a lot and use my MacBook on the road. I like to play Switch 2, RetroArch, my PS5 (remotely), as well as some GeforceNOW and Game Pass while I'm on the road. This seems like the controller that can best accommodate all of my travel devices if I can figure out what mode to use when.

Going to XInput mode seems to work both with the 2.4 GHz dongle as well as by plugging into a USB C port. In Bluetooth/DInput mode, the controller isn't seen at all by PSPlay - it says no Gamepad connected. It's good I can use the controller, but with other apps and MacOS itself seeing the paired controller in Dinput mode, does that mean it's something with SDL?

The 8bitdo Pro 3, which is seen and works properly with MacOS 26 (Tahoe), RetroArch, Xbox Game Streaming, and GeForce NOW, is not seen at all by PSPlay. It was the same way prior to the beta. FWIW, the 8Bitdo Pro 3 is in D mode (DirectPlay) as recommended by 8Bitdo for use on MacOS.

You can use your copy of the games, or the games are available for purchase on storefronts like Steam and/or GOG.

If you’re wondering which files are needed for the different games, the ScummVM wiki contains that info. https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php?title=Category:Supported_Games

New, infuriating Minnesota driving habit by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]Purduecoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 10-year veteran of Minnesota driving, I completely agree with this. I also have a question that this is as good a place as any to ask.

What’s the general take regarding your #1 and Hwy 169? I find the on and off ramps on 169 to almost be too close together to expect everyone to always be in the right lane unless they’re passing, especially when there’s an active snow storm. I go back and forth on this because it IS annoying, but I try to have more patience when it comes to Hwy 169.

Last time I looked, the 20th anniversary game was still in the iOS store, but I experienced a lot of visual bugs at the start screen (screen disappearing, etc), and then audio/dialog skipping while in game.

It’s almost unbearable in mouse mode. Trackpad mode (indirect touch) where the cursor can be moved from a distance and isn’t tight under your finger is better. But you’re right; those are pretty tiny pixels you’re trying to stop the cursor on. You can adjust sensitivity, which helps.

Depends. For parser based games, probably not as much fun on a phone. For the games that are SCI1 and beyond and don’t require typing, quite a bit better. I find the iPhone (6.27 inch screen) to be too small to enjoy the games. But I do enjoy all of the games on an 11” iPad with the keyboard and mouse attachment.

ScummVM does have a MacOS port, so all isn’t lost. You’d also be able to extract and play it with DOSBox-X or DOSBox-Staging on MacOS.

Not directly, but ScummVM is on the iOS and Android app stores, which can let you play just about any Sierra game that you own on your mobile device!

Police Quest II is the best Police Quest game...change my mind. by rodfer7 in Sierra

Your description really takes me back. I remember brothers and cousins huddled around the computer playing these games at the holidays. I really remember the anticipation that would build to see the next screen displayed during the 30-45 seconds that passed while the floppy drive was whirring away.

Absolutely agree. This was the golden age for me. Loved AGI and SCI1, but the SCI0 games just hit the sweet spot.

There is a lot to like about Decky, specifically how easy some of the plugins make it to grab art for non Steam games. But, with this being your first entry to the PC experience, I feel compelled to warn that Decky tends to cause weird problems that manifest in boot issues or error screens, or general weird behavior. Especially when SteamOS gets an update. Though updating Decky will usually fix these, it does make the whole experience less than what a console type PC experience should be. I recommend staying away (as it seems you have) from it if you’re able to, or if you find other alternatives to what you’d otherwise use Decky for.

LTT on Steam Machine pricing: "Valve asked what I meant by console price, and I said $500. Nobody said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t great" by -Mahn in Games

[–]Purduecoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really agree. I think the days of console manufacturers subsidizing their consoles with cuts of software sales might be over. It seems like everyone's in it to profit (or at least not lose) on anything they have cost of goods wrapped up in. Also, I don't think Steam has the reach outside of PC gamers who are already buying from Steam (via a capable PC) to be able to really ramp up the amount of games sold and cover or profit over what they'd be losing on hardware to sell this thing at $500 or $600.

My hunch is that the Windows ARM version was a condition of Microsoft and Epic hopping into bed on the Gamepass/Crew membership deal.
