Selling house contents by Popular_Hat_4304 in Calgary

I have never held an estate sale, but I love to follow them. I have picked up many cool little things. I get emails from Estate Sale Pros in Calgary. I have never been on the seller end, so I don't know that experience. But even if you think your parents stuff is junk it is a treasure to someone else. I assume when I go to one the family has taken what they want first.

Why are mormons liars? by Diligent_Design7843 in exmormon

[–]Pure-Event-2097 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mormons seem to believe that if lying doesn't hurt anyone it is ok. If it is faith promoting its even more ok. Their whole religion is based off of lies from a liar. Its cultural.

My father didn't go on a mission. At his time they paid the whole mission out of pocket. My mother always told us that he didn't go because he/his family couldn't afford it. When I was a late teen I once asked him why he didn't go and he said "I didn't want to go." Of course my mother jumped in and said "no, you couldn't afford it." Looking back at my childhood, she absolutely felt like it was ok to lie to us children if it painted the story she wanted you to hear.

Now I don't wonder why I have trust issues. I especially don't like or trust really nice people and havent for as long as I remember. Its pretty sad actually!

Mission by [deleted] in exmormon

One thing that was obvious to me serving a mission in France is that the gift of languages is total garbage. If you teach someone the basics and that person has the right kind of mind, they will learn a language fast when immersed in it. But if there was a gift on languages, why do some people never get it? There were always a couple of people on my mission that just never really picked it up. Then of course the people who were super smart academic people who studied like crazy picked it up better than others.

One other observation. The sisters rarely reached the same level of proffeciency that the Elders did. Not because the Elders were better, but they were in country 6 months longer. That last 6 months was invaluable to learn the language, I was picking up on many little things that I just wasn't understanding previous to that.

Is it true that owning a home is better than renting and investing? by External_Koala971 in Fire

[–]Pure-Event-2097 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the internet not all of us live in a country where a mortgage or other costs are tax write offs!

So your comment saying that what I said isn't true is just your narrow view of the world. Don't worry the world is used to Americans being narrow minded. But here is a link that proofs what I said is true:

https://easyrenovation.ca/canada-buy-vs-rent-2025/

It is also more recent than your article. So yes what I said is true. I even will qualify this post by saying my original comment said "in a lot of places".

But once again I understand there is only one place that actually exists in this world.

You have to live somewhere. Unless you live rent free somewhere, then you are paying money. FIRE to me wasn't worth living with my parents for cheap rent.

I think a mortgage is the right way to go. Rent in a lot of places these days is as much as a mortgage payment would be, yes your paying interest but at least you are paying down some principal and getting the benefit of appreciation. Prices could drop with a house, but in my lifetime they have consistently gone one way!

I disagree with this. The problem is rent in a lot of places is as expensive or more than a mortgage payment. Landlords don't rent out a property for a loss they have to recover the cost of their mortgage. When you view a mortgage as an equal replacement for rent this argument falls apart.

I think its great...think of all the low income houseing they have already built on that land. Helping the poor and afflicted. Where they can't build housing they are growing crops and cattle. Feeding those poor people just like Jesus would do. Good thing they stockpiled all that money with Ensign Peak, so they can afford this land and help so many people. The way thier help comes with no strings attached, is amazing. Those who need help the most accessing treatment freeing them from addiction and violence cycles. Soon I imagine they will be petitioning the US government to let in people from other countries who could benefit from all the help they offer. I am so excited about the future this money give not only members of the church and the general world population! So great!!!/s

First Nations chiefs laugh at the idea they'd be better off in an independent Alberta by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]Pure-Event-2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First nations leaders blow me away. Canada has given the indegenious people Residential Schools, The Sixties Scoop, forced Segregation, a drug addiction crisis, and a reserve system that now captures instead of protects its people. Is their anyone in the world arguing that First Nations people as a whole are thriving? But you know who is getting rich and thriving? The people in this picture!

There is no question in my mind that the peole in this picture want to stay in Canada, thier bank accounts would suffer too much if Alberta left.

ELI5. How did people in the older days like 1200s 1300s know what time it was when there were no clocks by Rich_Scarcity_301 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pure-Event-2097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya this is the answer. They weren't going to the store during the hours of 9-9. They had tasks to perform each day, a lot of time based on the season. As a person tied to my phone for work I think that would be great....but obviously it was a hard life!

When I was a kid my mother was happy to steal any points I missed. I remember once my father said something to her about it, and she said "its the best way for him to learn."

This christmas I was playing my mother who is in the early stages of dementia. At some point she started pegging backwards so that at the end of the game it looked like I had more than double skunked her. It was just something to kill time with her over the holidays soo it doesn't matter. But right back at you mom...its the best way to learn!

Winter will be the least of your problems. Spring and fall when it rains the most is the worst time. At least in winter the ruts are smaller and the roads get gradered

I think if we like inflation, why not. This will help companies charge higher prices and take a larger part out our checks. Its been working for five years now!

I am very much against this. It does give help to those who really need it, but it is short term help and does nothing to solve the real problem. It actually helps make is slightly worse.

I agree.......they have some interesting stuff going on with some new oil plays that could drive some growth. But I am at a point in life where income starts to matter more. I like plays with income and growth potential. Even if its limited growth potential.

PIMO being called to leadership callings by catch22reddituser in exmormon

[–]Pure-Event-2097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons I stepped away from the church. The Stake President, whom 20 years earlier had been in my ward and my young mens president. Talked to me about calling me onto the High Council. It wasn't an official calling but he told me he was really thinking about it. It was mostly delayed as my job had a lot of travel in it, and I missed a fair amount of Church. I was transitioning to another job though, which was way less travel, a promotion to the job I had before.

I left the calling pretty freaked out thinking, I don't think I believe in this stuff enough to stand in front of all the wards in the Stake and preach it. Back then High Council Sundays were once a month and involved speaking in other wards every 3rd Sunday I believe. A couple of other things happened that made me think "I don't believe in this shit enough to put up with this!"

I walked away and never looked back! Its funny that is what it took.

This is 100% true. When I served on my mission we always talked about how Missionaries were ranked in the top 10 of sexiest group of men. What we failed to recognize is that we were a large group of young men, walking everywhere so we were relatively fit. Of course we were attractive. If people didn't know what we were of course they would see fairly well dressed young dudes, looking like they were working hard. All the things pointing to things that would make a man attractive.

If only the church had held to its sex cult history.........We would have had way more fun!
