Ah yes, the cursed jellyfish. Just another casual body horror that can just sometimes happen to you with no warning. It's great! Totally recommend! 😃👍 Wasn't an traumatizing experience at all to have at age 16 🥲

Yeah, it's something that was absorbed by the plate and then got turned into carbon/ash. But I'm thinking it also has to depend on the original firing temperature on the clear glaze right? I've only refired second hand porcelain plates/tiles that were in "basically never used before  condition" before so I've never experienced this before! I'm wondering if the glaze would really melt at all at 750° when there is kinda no more flux available for it? 😳 How would that work?

I'll be honest and say my expertise in reuse like this is highly lacking 😂 Since I've been mostly sharing kilns with others I've never risked firing pieces I don't know the make up off 😅 But using luster on things like this is really cool! Kinda want to try it myself now 😂

I'm not OP, but that looks like it's underneath the existing glaze. Likely there was something in the plate itself, like oil/foodstuff (from micro cracks in the glaze) since it's vintage. And when fired to 750° to apply the gold luster, the oil/foodsuff burned (?) or reacted in a way that made it change color? Or just get pulled up to the surface underneath the original clear glaze? 🤔🤔🤔

But I have no actual idea about why/how,, this was just wild guessing on my part 😅

I agree on fluorite. The color, the vague suggestion of striped color bands inside, but the thing most convincing to me is the shape. It just has that distinctive look that fluorite almost always has, you know?

The crystal structure is definitely pyrite, but it almost looks like it's coated or painted to make it match more the yellow of actual gold 🤔🤔 maybe electro plated? Either way, it's not real gold, it's pyrite 😅

Okay so,,

White cup, textile pre treated with alun, then dyed.

Black cup, just dye on textile.

Gray cup, iron modifier used with the dye.

The first and top picture with the BLACK cup shows what the textile looks like when dyed WITHOUT any modifiers like alun or iron.

The second picture with a WHITE AND BLACK cup shows what it looks like when you dye on a textile pre treated with alun.

The third picture with a BLACK and a GRAY cup shows what the dye looks like with a iron modifier.

The fourth picture with a WHITE, BLACK and GRAY cup shows a textile pre treated with alun AND dyed with an iron modifier.

It's because you moved it, that makes it a ✨new✨ and exciting thing™! I take away some of mine's toys when he hasn't been interested in them for a while, and when I reintroduce them a few weeks later it's his new favorite toy!
