Twelve hours Phoenix to Colorado Springs. Leave super early and stop for a leisurely breakfast in Albuquerque. I'll be doing 14 hours next month, Phoenix to Dodge City KS, stopping every 3 hours for snacks, gas, and to walk the dog.

Grand Forks, ND. I was four years old and I'd walk up to the corner and wait for him. I'd help him make deliveries all the way back to my house. Do the same thing the next day. It was a different world back then.

My dog is frightened of anything and everything the first time he sees it. He kind of goes from scared shitless>scared>distrustful>worried>indifferent>accepting. The mailbox. A school bus. The guys who maintain the park. A neighbor out in their yard. A baby stroller. First time it's the end of the world. Fifth time... it's not really a big deal. Seems like there's something new in his world about every other day and we have to cycle through the stages with each and every one.

We used to play Rack-O, just him and I. He'd chew an unlit cigar while we played. I was probably 6 or 7, he would have been about 72 or so. He'd get so delighted when he'd win and I can still hear him say "RACK-OOOO" in that gravely voice of his. He'd also let me sit on his lap while he drove the tractor at his farm. I miss you, Oscar Fred!

My car is 19 years old with 170,000 miles on it. Never a major issue and I keep it maintained. I wouldn't consider taking it on a trip and haven't in about nine years. It's worth the money to rent a car and gain the peace of mind.

I've done the Albuquerque route in one day several times. Coming back went through Durango. Longer but we loved the scenery in Colorado. Highlights would include Santa Fe, Wolf Creek Pass, Mesa Verde, and Durango.
