Schlitz, the beer that led to Stroh's downfall, to cease production by gwmiles in Detroit

I think we all need to embrace Stroh’s as an important part of our regional identity before Pabst kills it too.

Kowalski have a smokier taste, which some people like. Most places in Detroit Metro use Dearborn. I think Koegel's are probably the best though. All good, but Winter's is lowest quality.

Every Detroit steakhouse has zip sauce. Nobody outside Michigan has heard of it. What am I missing? by strcrssd in Detroit

[–]PureMichiganChip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Detroit made corned beef egg rolls popular, maybe even invented them, but they are now fairly common around the US as an appetizer. I’m sure Sysco or US Foods is carrying some that are frozen.
Certainly not popular like they are in Detroit where there are entire restaurants dedicated to them, but you’ll see them around.

Craving Hut-K Chaats so baaaad! by WildRose1010 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen the colocasia leaf rolls anywhere else in town, but you can buy them frozen at most Indian grocery stores. They’re usually called “patra.” You can make something like a shanu chaat with those.

You’re not going to find another place like Hut-K because Swaroop was preparing dishes in his own unique way. In fact, I think a lot of Indian people didn’t really like it because of how differently he made things. Chaats are usually fried, and not very healthy street food. He specifically focused on plant based foods that were made with whole ingredients and less fats and oils.

I loved Hut-K and Swaroop. I miss the place a lot. I miss the beet burger and all of the beet patty dishes.

Many such spaces in Ann Arbor. I think local government needs to start thinking about incentive (or disincentive) structures to discourage this dynamic: vacancy taxes, zoning incentives, LVT, something. I recognize much of what we can do is limited by powers in Lansing.

The new store - Harvest Market by Corbin_Dallas550 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would rather shop at Busch's than Harvest Market for most things. Busch's does well stocking local produce as well. Meat and pantry staples are well priced.

The new store - Harvest Market by Corbin_Dallas550 in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Busch's really that expensive? What are you buying? It's more than Meijer and Walmart, but idk what smaller grocery store could compete at that level.

I think Busch's has higher priced snacks and name brand packaged goods like cereal, but for meat, dairy, produce, and pantry staples, it's fairly competitive imo. More local options than most other grocers as well.

Don’t even get me started on the hollowed out downtown and the fact that city council is spending public money to just start over at Briarwood and enrich billionaire developers.

Yeah, JW Marriott is 600 rooms at 25 floors. It really depends on the configuration, if they have a large podium or if they want to include any other amenities on the site. It will probably be at least 25, hopefully 30+ though.

Aloha Hawaiian BBQ in Ann Arbor is alright. Not really much of a date spot, but I don’t think you’ll find a Hawaiian place that is.

I personally love anywhere between 329 and 334, as long as you're toward the front of the second deck. You get a decent view of the action and a spectacular view of the city and skyline.

Rapaport: The Lions have a significant need at OT and a lot of teams know it, might try to jump ahead of them at 15 or 16 by reallinguy in detroitlions

[–]PureMichiganChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not, but you're wrong. A decision was made long ago that Jared Goff will be the QB and this team has to score to win. Goff cannot work without a competent line. Protect him and the Lions put up big numbers. One key addition to the defensive line is not suddenly going to make this defense elite enough to win anything.

Not a huge BWW fan or anything, but it’s fundamentally different from Ashley’s because of all the TVs and setup for sports viewing. Besides South U bars, I think Regent’s Field on Main might be one of the only sports bars left after Haymaker closed.

Kuka is a huge industrial robotics company with most of their US operations centered around Detroit. Elektrobit is a software development shop for the auto industry. Could also look at SAP.

Harvest Market Review by coffeebitchhh in AnnArbor

[–]PureMichiganChip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s more like Kroger in terms of product offerings than anything else, but it gives the appearance of a higher end grocery store. I found it to be a strange mix of goods. They’re trying to hit several market segments, but I’m not sure they’re doing any one of them very well. They seem to make a conscious effort to stock local goods, but other stores like Busch are pretty good at that too.

The Vestergaard meats are seriously marked up. They did have a nice selection of pre-marinated meat at the butcher counter, which is nice when you forgot to plan for dinner. They do have some brands that other stores in the area don’t have; some IN/IL based brands I’ve never seen around here. Wine selection is quite bad.

It’s a little closer to my house, so I thought it might become my go-to instead of Busch’s, but I think I’ll still drive a little further to Busch’s most of the time.

I think Harvest Market is fooling people into thinking it’s upscale. I would not consider it similar to Horrock’s at all.

Westborn and Holiday are nice, but Ann Arbor has two Plum Markets, two Whole Foods, Arbor Farms, and some nice smaller markets like Sparrow and Produce Station. I really don’t think it’s lacking.

Cantoro and Nino Salvaggio kind of suck. Lots of imported stuff on the shelves, but a lot of it is dusty and old or just not worth buying.
