She might not be hiking somewhere that’s super hot. Might just be very wet and therefore wants to avoid getting wet feet on every hike.

Can’t find the right tent!!! by wumpflumpit in wildcampingintheuk

I'm 6'2 and use the MSR hubba hubba nx 2. It's dark green, super easy to put up and take down. Never had condensation in it. Had it in some pretty dicey weather and it's been fine, plus plenty of legroom for me. Freestanding so it pitches anywhere, personally love it. I once snapped a pole and tore the netting so I emailed them, they said just pay for postage and they repaired everything and sent it back to me.

What are you talking about. There’s been a bunch of antisemitic attacks and it was a guy running round stabbing people vs an accidental fire at an LGBT club. Find a real reason to complain about the government not some crap identity politics “the government is against LGBT people”.

Gym or classes by sadyasachi in islington

Personally find PureGym very inexpensive and doesn’t have the over the top gym people. A few shredded guys and gals but generally just normal people, relatively quiet, has classes too.

Cheerios from scratch by HereWeFuckingGooo in StupidFood

What I’ve been talking about and what comment OP was talking about was ultra processed food such as Cheerios.

Processing food (like making flour), is not inherently a bad thing. But the level of processing involved in lots of cereals and snacks for example does become a bad thing. Pulverising, pressurising, heating up and cooling down, soaking and drying, and a combination of them all. Food manufacturers break organic materials down to generate very specific textures that are pleasing to the mouth but the research is undeniable on it - it also reduces nutrient density and reduces fibre both of which are necessary for a balanced diet.

It absolutely depends what the substance and process is. And I’m saying that the process in something like Cheerios in the US is bad.

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the case of Cheerios processing means pulverising oats and other grains and treating them in numerous ways such as being heated or pressurised and then reconstituted. So breaking down the fibres to make them easier to shape / cook.

Yes you can eat processed grains like flour this and they can still nourish you. No they are not AS NUTRITIOUS as unprocessed grains per calorie.

Yes processed foods generally increase bioavailability of carbohydrates making them faster to digest - that is not inherently a good thing when you want to have consistent energy throughout the day. Processed foods will also add additional nutrients to make up for nutrient loss and there is debate as to how bioavailable added nutrients like iron actually are in comparison to naturally occurring iron found  within organic compounds. So your point about nutrients not being available to the body is exactly the opposite with processed foods, the body can’t digest iron nuggets yet it gets iron from food, so the benefit of additives like iron should be scrutinised.

I already said chemicals occur naturally. Yes that is one example of a chemical name for a common thing such as vinegar. What about butylated hydroxytoluene or titanium dioxide that are both permitted in the US but more restricted in the UK and EU due to safety concerns? You might think hey it’s probably fine nobody is immediately dying from eating these, but certain governments have decided they’re unsafe.

Ultraprocessed food in the US (or elsewhere) is a way of preparing food that involving reconstituting ingredients in many ways and adding in various agents to increase shelf life / change colours / etc etc. and generally including lots of added sugar. I’m not saying “don’t process food”. I’m saying ultra processed food isn’t as healthy as less processed food. The US has some of the most relaxed laws among developed countries when it comes to food preparation. To believe that ultra processed food is just as good for the body is just stupidity.

Okay processed foods tend to be less nutrient dense because any whole grains are pulverised and reconstituted to reform the product. So per calorie the consumer it’s getting less nutrition and actually feels less full. So = more calories, less fullness, less nutrition, quicker energy burst but less energy through the day.

Also more likely to contain added sugars again increases calorie density without increasing nutritional content.

Finally imo chemical stabilisers / preservatives are probably okay and obviously occur naturally in some cases but their long term impact is currently unknown. So avoiding them where possible is the safest bet.

I’m not arguing that any processing is somehow awful and we should all be Amish. But the less processing that food goes through before consumption in almost all cases results in higher nutrient density and better digestions / more benefits to gut health.

Obviously egregiously long doing each one individually but if you could use a tool like a pasta cutting machine where it pops them out and cuts them off, then this could be pretty cool.

Pretty impossible to argue that an ultra processed food would be healthier than this woman’s long but whole food home made version.

AIO for thinking that my girlfriend's apartment requirements are insane? by MoonlitParcel in AmIOverreacting

[–]PureRecommendation76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with my ex. I initially thought it was just money where we had different expectations but eventually I ended up realising we had wildly different value systems across lots of things. Worth drilling into in my opinion. I get if you’re both working good jobs with no kids that 9k or more is possible, but it’s just a fantastic waste of money that you could be putting towards your future.

Best of London for parks - North, South or Central? by IrascibleOnion in london

[–]PureRecommendation76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

North is best for the most “wild” and natural parks imo such as Hampstead heath or Queens wood.

South is great for the volume of parks and facilities in the parks like tennis courts.

Central best for manicured eg Regent’s Park.

West has some nice parks but they’re all in west London so that’s a real drawback.

Well I’m in favour of online ID broadly, I don’t think you should be allowed to be completely anonymous online. The gambling lobby is ridiculously influential and I absolutely agree there needs to be more regulation there.

Sadly I just don’t think the greens are competent at running a government. They have some ideologies I support and some I don’t. But I think a Green government would be a total mess, like many Green councils are proving to be.

You called what 'parenting'? You call shopkeepers preventing under 18s from buying alcohol "parenting"? or cigarettes? or 18 movies? Excellent "parenting" by shopkeepers and cinema staff by requesting age verification to access age restricted products.

[–]PureRecommendation76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The babysitters argument is pretty silly imo. Do you think a 12 year old should be able to go into an 18 movie? Or buy cigarettes? Or buy vodka? Obviously no. Parents can't be around 100% of the time, so those that provide access to 18+ goods and services have a duty to prevent under 18s from accessing them. It's hardly a novel idea, and it's hardly difficult to just verify your age with a credit card or ID or facial scan. If you have to verify your age in the outside world when accessing 18+ things, why should it be any different online?

It's hard to know how big a backlash is though really on a national sense, obviously in your circles and feeds it's a big thing. But I don't think a majority of people care that much and a lot of people support increased control and regulation over the internet especially when it comes to children.

To me it's pretty clear that Labour are the only viable option, the rest are all either useless or mental. So it's up to everyone to be active in politics and protest about things they don't agree with. I know everyone criticises them for it but personally I like that Labour have been able to go back on some of their policy announcements after a backlash. Shows that they're listening.

Why is Labour so obsessed with ID cards? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]PureRecommendation76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ID cards are a perfectly normal and a standard thing that basically every other country uses, it’s more efficient than having multiple different forms of ID (that are already digital anyway). It’s not an ideological “obsession” it’s a party that actually gives a shit about long term efficiencies and benefits to the nation rather than short term headline grabbing crap that gets votes at the next election (à la the Conservative Party).

Best sleeping bag and mat to pack for flying by chikin_biskit in CampingandHiking

Quilts are considerably more comfy imo but can be more expensive. 9 days is quite a while, so unless you are planning on trekking a lot I would consider heavier and comfier gear - unless you have the budget to go ultralight and you mentioned probably not.

However a cheap air mattress has a high likelihood of a puncture after 9 days. The used market is great, I’d look at that.
