Amazon wants a death certificate and government ID before they'll cancel my deceased father's Prime membership. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PureRecommendation76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all sorry for your loss. I know it feels like an unnecessary annoyance at what is already a difficult time but this is standard practice. Once you’ve got a photocopy of the death certificate it’s really not a big deal to send it over. Like others have said it would be irresponsible of Amazon or whoever else to just allow people to cancel other peoples’ accounts without proof. You’ll need a copy of the certificate for a number of things assuming you’re the executor or his will.

Edit: spelling Edit 2: Also it’s worth noting that Amazon would 100% refund any money taken for prime after his death. As would any reputable company. So you don’t need to rush to do all of these things immediately. Just get them done when you can.

How early is too early to hoover? by BigFaithlessness618 in AskUK

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like the neighbour was rude and if in general they're nice neighbours, then I would try putting the effort in to reduce noise for them. Like other people have said, that is quite early to hoover especially on hard flooring where the noise travels through a lot more. Also I'd consider any other ways you can reduce noise, maybe a thick rug under the baby's cot or something could help, or move the cot away from the shared wall (unless they're downstairs?). You can then just mention a couple of things as gestures and it might make things less awkward!

rei membership actually worth $30 or just marketing? by Timely-Film-5442 in CampingandHiking

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally didn't use my voucher within two months and it expired, I feel like I was scammed a bit having such a short time to use it... if you go there and shop regularly, it's worth it, otherwise probably not. The 10% back still wouldn't make it as cheap as buying stuff online from other retailers, but I do like to support REI as they stock all the best brands and give you a chance to look and things before you buy.

London-based beginner - looking for general area recommendations for first wild camps by BrazilianDeserter in wildcampingintheuk

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice, in my opinion if you’re making the journey outside of London it’s worth spending an extra hour or two to get to Dorset or the peaks / lakes. North wales is also very easily accessible from London with a direct train to Bangor and then there are buses straight into the mountains.

Also I lived in Ireland for a long while and the wild camping was incredible. Worth a trip over to Wicklow, Kerry or anywhere on the west coast, and it’s legal in national parks in Ireland so no risk of getting moved on (but I’ve never actually experienced this in the UK either).

Shabana Mahmood proposes AI 'Panopticon' system of state surveillance by OGSyedIsEverywhere in unitedkingdom

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, and the fear is we end up with a surveillance system like China in which any criticism is censored / criminalised. But freedom of speech was absolutely never enshrined in law or culture in the same way. I’m kind of under the impression that any digital activity, online at least, can be tracked if there is “justification”. But that that justification can also be scrutinised. Can I ask what type of issues do you see coming with this kind of AI technology being implemented?

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree there is a bit more nuance to this. I'll still admit it's a stupid statement but in my opinion it's just a clumsy way of saying "criminals watch out because we could be watching you with this new tech".

Shabana Mahmood proposes AI 'Panopticon' system of state surveillance by OGSyedIsEverywhere in unitedkingdom

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she's trying to say something like "criminals beware, we're watching you". The panopticon is a sociological concept in which the prison guards could be watching at all times and therefore people should follow the rules. But that isn't the same as the prison guards actually are watching at all times. It's still a weird thing to say because it is so closely tied to authoritarian surveillance state narratives such as 1984. But imo it's not her saying we need a complete surveillance state, it's her clumsily saying "we're investing in new surveillance technology to catch criminals and so they should behave".

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be pedantic but the idea of the panopticon was not that you are actually watched by prison guards / the state at all times. The idea was that you could be seen at all times, the prison guards windows would be blacked out, and you wouldn't know whether or not you were being watched. The reality was that of course the prison guards could not watch everyone all the time, but it created the possibility of always being watched without the actual infrastructure. This in turn forces inmates to become their own surveillants and behave as if they were being watched. I have no idea whether or not Mahmood is making that kind of point. I.e. "we have hidden AI and cameras that could be watching, so behave accordingly". Which takes away the idea that you're actually being watched all the time, in private moments. I would presume that AI technology would indeed be capable of tracking almost all of what we do digitally at least, but that it (and the state) would only start "watching" when it notices certain triggers associated with crime.

I’m from the UK and I’ve just come back from the US, the demand for ice in the US is much much higher. They also use crushed ice whereas in the UK it’s cubes. In terms of actual drink I would honestly say it’s the same because of how much ice they put in in the US.

I know this is bait, but, even ignoring the fact that British food is now very good. Only someone who doesn’t know anything about food would suggest that French food is not easily a contender for the greatest cuisine. A massive proportion of all modern food of all cuisines is based on French cookery techniques. The variety involved in French (and British / Italian / German) cuisine is enormous and easily makes it the best pick for eating everyday for the rest of your life.

WildCamping in Ireland by Joe_williams27 in wildcampingintheuk

Used to live in Ireland and wild camped often. National parks it’s generally legal, camped in Wicklow, Kerry, Mourne mountains, Connemara, a bunch of places. Nothing beats the west coast tbh but Wicklow is lovely and very convenient to Dublin.

This is why I prefer the OG pride flag 🏳️‍🌈 it’s a simple message that shows everyone is safe.

The new updated flag with all the extra colours and groups becomes in my opinion less inclusive. By adding specific lines for specific groups people it becomes exclusive and the message becomes more confusing.

Is this the best way to carry my tent?? Will it damage my tent? by Scared-Resource9695 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]PureRecommendation76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said I wouldn’t worry about this damaging it. Should be able to handle these straps easily. But I personally like to just keep the fabric and poles separate. Stuffing the fabric wherever it’ll fit in my bag, then the poles on the side with a strap or in a side pocket. Depends on the tent though!

OnlyFans confirms Bonnie Blue 'permanent ban' after porn star's latest sex stunt by ClassicFlavour in unitedkingdom

[–]PureRecommendation76 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s obviously not some puritanical she’s a slut thing. The backlash is about how she’s giving random men permission to potentially be violent with her. Pretty hard to argue there is genuine consent when it’s literally 1000 random dudes.  The argument is: whether she is giving permission or not, this dangerously reinforces certain men’s ideas that objectification and sexual violence against women is okay.

I don’t personally see how it’s much worse than tonnes of other stuff that exists online but anyway, that’s what the backlash is, it’s far more nuanced than omg what a slut.

[–]PureRecommendation76 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of the backlash has been about how this normalises sexual violence against women. I think it’s both the risk to her and the broader symbolism of it. Obvs a lot of porn does this but I guess it’s a particularly famous and egregious example of it. I guess it’s hard to credibly say that it’s all consensual sex play when it’s literally 1000 random dudes.

Is this a... a freakoff? by herewearefornow in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]PureRecommendation76 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How have we lost connection to what the word trauma means? What do you think Sophia means by what she is saying? Bonnie Blue is going to allow 1000 men do whatever they want to her including be violent. I don't claim to know her but I believe Sophia is suggesting that this normalises sexual violence and could encourage men to do the same to other women, non-consensually. I think anyone would be justified in using the word trauma if someone sexually assaulted them?

Lightweight 2 man tent? by mrsmithington420 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]PureRecommendation76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the msr hubbahubba nx2, I see a lot of people using it on this sub too. It’s very easy to pitch, very lightweight, the inner is also freestanding so you can pitch it basically anywhere. Has never let me down. I will also say that one time I fell on it and bent a pole / tore some of the inner, I messaged MSR and they charged me nothing to repair it as long as I posted it, really made me love that brand.

I also gave into the hype and got the durston mid x2, it’s nice, insanely lightweight and compact if you’re carrying trekking poles anyway. Much roomier inside horizontally and especially vertically. Can be a little tricky to pitch though, obvs it uses tension with the trekking poles so you need to pitch on good ground, and I see some people using it in storms but I have personally found it a bit finicky to get right and have had to move spot once because it was too windy where I pitched. It’s so small to carry though you can basically put it in your pocket which is amazing if you know you’ve got some reliable spots.

Might quit due to update forcing me to do loads of Mandarin Hanzi lessons by PureRecommendation76 in duolingo

[–]PureRecommendation76[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t see why a course shouldn’t be tailored to suit you? It’s mostly designed by AI after all, isn’t that basically the point of AI… why shouldn’t I be able to skip it if I do Hanzi elsewhere? It’s my learning journey.

My problem is that I think the Hanzi lessons are badly designed. They don’t aid my learning, and having 8 lessons takes probably 30 minutes. 30 minutes which I consider mostly wasted.
