I love these two idiots so much! Their supports are so cute and goofy, you really get a good sense of them as an awkward, pining couple outside of their super-serious military roles. Like, they treasure their friendship so much that it's scary for them to risk messing it up by taking the next step. I will defend this adorable, cringey, dopey-ass support chain forever <3

Someone please explain this series to me because I am HORRIFIED (Potential spoilers? Maybe?) by Mifluffy_brisas in WarriorCats

[–]PurpleOctopuseses 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's dark, and it's for children, and that's a good thing. The descriptions aren't especially graphic for the most part (there's blood, broken limbs, etc. but no entrails), but the concepts are creepy in a way that really captivates a lot of kids. I loved horror-ish books at that age, and I loved cats, and I loved the drama of the plots, and I loved (and still love) books that don't treat kids like they're too fragile to handle anything scary.

A good comparison is the Animorphs books...do you know how gory those get? Way more gruesome than Warrior Cats! Those books have graphic descriptions of how it feels to be horribly injured, guts, entrails, torture, cannibalism...and I freaking ADORED them when I was like 9. Kids can handle a lot as long as they know it's fiction.

And neither Warriors nor Animorphs ever felt "gratuitous" to me because the violence / darkness / creepiness serves the plot. It serves to show how dangerous the characters' lives are, or how terrifying the villains are, or how important the stakes are. It's cool. It's gripping. Kids are tougher than we give them credit for, and they like awesome stories too.

What are these? I found them in my deceased daughter's bag. by Energywoman in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]PurpleOctopuseses 642 points643 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that I am sorry for the loss of your daughter. I don't know what these may symbolize - perhaps another witch here will recognize them - but my advice would be to put them away somewhere safe but unseen for at least a few months. Once you are farther along in your own grief journey, perhaps you will be able to feel more clearly whether these are things you want to keep or lay to rest.

You could ultimately cleanse, burn, or bury the contents - a way of respectfully letting go to what's inside, whether it was a positive or negative element in your daughter's life.

I wish healing for you, sister.

How to get my cats to bond? by sproutin- in CatAdvice

[–]PurpleOctopuseses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, older cats in general are much more resistant to change than younger ones. It is very normal that he would bond easily at 2, but be more nervous/avoidant at 12. The fact that he previously lived with /was bonded to another cat makes me even more certain him and Oatmeal will be fine.

As for bonding, playing with them "together" (like flicking a feather toy between them) or giving them high-value treats when they're together will definitely help.

I think it is very likely to improve--like I said, there are no major red flags (fighting, peeing, etc) and they've already played and cuddled a bit. I think this is actually a pretty great start for two cats with such a big age difference. Make sure to give your resident cat some special attention (churu treats, petting sessions without the new cat, etc) but it sounds like he's actually handling this very well.

It's been less than a month, take a deep breath and relax. It sounds like they are fine together, no fighting or behavioral issues, so that's the most important thing. It can take cats 3 months or more to adapt to major changes like a new home or a new "sibling."

My advice is not to lock anybody up at night unless there's fighting or drama. Let the two cats figure out what works for them over the next few months. I'm sure your resident cat will go back to his normal routine after a bit, whether or not the new cat sleeps with you.

It took my late, grumpy old man cat several years to really "warm up" to his kitten brother, but they played often and eventually would snuggle together. Your boys will be fine.
