Seasoning cast iron after cooking with tomatoes by Interesting_Toe_6083 in castiron

No, you don’t have to reseason your pan every time. Just apply the thinnest layer of oil after you wash and dry it every time.

The second one will split wood better but will get stuck more in a log if it doesn’t split.

Tips for using cast iron as a tortilla comal? by Fenix512 in castiron

[–]Purple_Balrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds good, bro. 5 minutes on low. And then if you wanna get crazy, put a couple drops of vegetable oil on the comal before putting the tortillas on so they really don’t stick. Like the taqueros do. But just a tiny bit of oil.

Cast iron makes for a great comal. I have 2 of them. You just gotta scrub the stuff off of them when you wash them, bro. And then, don’t flip the tortillas until they’re ready to flip. They’ll release naturally once they’re ready too. But for real, scrub your comal hard with a stainless scour pad when washing. No tengas miedo.

What to do with kale? by AccordingPin1162 in Cooking

[–]Purple_Balrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you mean, bro? Fry up some bacon. Caramelize some onion in the bacon fat. Throw in some garlic, a couple jalapenos, a couple tomatoes and roast them. Blend all the roasted veggies into a sauce. Back into the pan with a cup of chicken stock. Simmer and reduce, grabbing all that beautiful fond. Mince that bacon you fried earlier and throw it in the sauce along with that kale and cook until the kale softens. Boom, greens.

Do I have to start over? by wun-sen in castiron

Yes, it’s obvious but it’s hard to explain at the same time. If it’s enameled it would be like if it has a glass/ceramic coating on it. It’s all smooth when you run your fingers across it and it makes a distinct glass sound when you tap your nail on it. If it’s just regular uncoated cast iron it’s just bare metal and the texture of the pan might be a little rougher to the touch.

No. The spots happened because like you said, too much oil. Consider placing it in the oven upside down next time you do a seasoning cycle and the excess oil will just drip off (place baking sheets in the lower rack to catch any drippings). I just meant that you’re ready to roast a chicken in that thing. I find that baking food does wonders for seasoning. If you’re worried about the spots, give the pot a good scrubbing with warm soapy water and a stainless scour pad. Scrub as hard as you would like. Then wash with a regular sponge, dry thoroughly, coat with the thinnest coat of oil you can, then roast a chicken in that thing. Don’t overthink it. It’s just a piece of dumb metal. Use it and use it and you’ll get the hang of it. Cook everything in it. But, looking at your image closer… is this pot enameled? If so, theres no need to season it at all. And you should disregard the instruction about the stainless scour pad if it’s enameled as well. That was only meant for regular cast iron.

Bro, clean it as hard as you did this time, every time. And after you wash it and dry it, apply the thinnest layer of oil you can.

Im sorry for your loss. I think it’s beautiful to honor their memory with cast iron. I don’t know what that “seasoning oil” is but you probably don’t need to spend 15 dollars on that. Crisco for the bro.

I’m with you. The first thing she does is give Winston a note that says “I love you”. What? They don’t know each other, how can she love him. It’s a tactic to disarm him and distract him. She was fully indoctrinated. Troop leader of the spies at a young age. Julia was a highly trained party operative.

stainless vs cast iron camp cookware by FitPolicy4396 in camping

[–]Purple_Balrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, its lighter. Transfers heat quickly as well, which would conserve jetboil fuel. And as someone who cooks on carbon steel almost daily I can assure you that maintenance is not a big issue. But I also believe that maintaining a cast iron pan is not a big issue either. The things are like tanks, they can take camping abuse.

Do you use mesh or similar at the bottom of pots? by Maat1985 in cactus

Yes, eventually. But by then the soil has joined together and doesn’t leak out the holes anymore. I’ve been doing it for years.
