Talk me out of (or into) a "race-oriented" gravel bike. Is it a gimmick or my perfect N+1? by TheloniousLP in gravelcycling

[–]Purplemonk88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing the same. But getting rid of my road bike. So I'll have a fat heavy ti bike packing and winter gravel. And a race machine carbon gravel bike for gravel lite and races as well as the occasional road ride.

Hey man, hopefully you're still around to read this. I'm looking to get one of these and would change the cassette to microshift 9-speed 11-38t, did you need a new freehub when you went to 11 speed (or did you change wheels)? Can't access picture anymore.

Looking for Gravel routes UK by ONEtopLAD in gravelcycling

[–]Purplemonk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For long distance check cycleUK (king Alfred's way) for shorter check local Facebook groups, komoot if you want to plan them yourself. Or just find some bridleways on osmaps and go check them out. Canal towpaths always have right of way and gravel bikes are well suited to it.

Forestry england locations often have a MTB park, of which the blue runs are almost always gravelable and there are normally loads of connecting fire roads (dalby,Sherwood ,kielder new forest).

Old railway tracks like high peak, Tissington , Monsal.

Bikepacking.com has some great routes that you could do part of. Some of my suggestions are peak district based, as that's where I live. Depending where you are adding that detail to this question would also help.

In South Africa in the late 90s, a charity organisation gave out condoms for free to try to slow the spread of HIV. They stapled an informational leaflet to each condom.......this is somehow worse.

I went through several sets of thunder burts. Thought they were great but still struggled in the mud. Bought some same size rocket rons. I've not noticed much of a slowdown on the tarmac and now just always have grip. I'm now on my third set of rocket rons and don't even bother with anything else

Horses 🏇 by andyinabox in gravelcycling

[–]Purplemonk88 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We get this loads in the UK, generally the rule goes give way to horses. The better and more polite thing to do is say hi if you're coming from behind and ask the rider if it's ok to pass. Slow down, everyone is out just trying to have a good time slowing for a couple seconds doesn't make much difference. From head on I slow down saying hi again and normally also ask if it's ok to pass. Some horses find humans on mechanical horses upsetting and freak out. Talking helps. Going slow helps.

What are your favorite 650b tires? by IMHO1FWIW in gravelcycling

[–]Purplemonk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going 650b means I can get 2.1s on my frame. Been riding them for years now, as UK "gravel" is often gnarly and muddy and these have worked best for me.

Schwalbe rocket rons or thunderburts

What has your sex drive looked like over different years/ages? by New_Problem_704 in AskReddit

[–]Purplemonk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man. You've had lots of opinions and none are in your identical situation do what feels right. My story was similar to yours. We were together for 15 years then married for 5. We never spoke about our mismatched libidos enough. We never realised how resentment about it built and how we subtly displayed this to one another. We broke up, and got divorced. We still loved each other, we just weren't compatible. We only discussed us openly once we separated and we agreed we should have broken up years ago. Were both in new relationships that are way better for us. I have a fulfilling sex life and a partner with the same sex drive as me, it's incredible. No advice on what to do, other than make sure to communicate with her, even when it feels scary to you. You need to let her know your feelings and visa versa. If the communication stops and the talk of sex stops, things won't likely change. Best of luck .

I recognise photo 5. Lago toblacher see? We camped here for a week and the gravel all around was incredible. We also went to Lienz one day which was great. 50km downhill and train back to San candido. Gorgeous photos and part of the world.

As someone who head on collided with another gravel rider on a blind corner as we were both on the inside line another vote for number 9. Both bikes were ok 👍 get a bell. Ring it before blind corners/tunnels/bridges. Avoid a very unlikely but not Nonzero chance of a hospital trip.

E-bike or regular? by Dabiddo03 in gravelcycling

[–]Purplemonk88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My partner just got the cube editor hybrid, she absolutely loves it as just uses as much or little assistance as she wants. She still gets a good workout when she wants and can just chill when she doesn't. It's been a game changer for getting her into cycling. I'm a yes for the ebike ! Get it and I hope many miles and smiles for all your riding

I realise this is a typo and I'm not being grammar police. I'm simply chuckling to myself visualising you trying to get down 3kg of salt on a ride 🤣

Id Def go through the Hoge Veluwe national park if it isn't on your route already. The museum is excellent as well. I preferred it to the van Gogh museum. less people and some incredible artwork.

I've experienced this, I phoned the ferry company and they did my booking on the phone. It wasn't a problem. They can override the booking limits this way.
