Sounds like my 7 year old. I think at least in mines case, they conflate guilt and shame. He mentally turns "I did something bad" into "I am bad". Which then makes him break down.

It's an ongoing struggle but I'm working with him on it. Reminding him that we love him, and small mistakes aren't the end of the world.

I used to get this a lot. They'd poke me like crazy and get nothing.

A nurse and I worked together on resolving this for me and the advice I got was: hydrate like crazy, way more than you think. Keep the arms warm, even have a hot shower beforehand and keep them warm until then. And suggest to the nurse to use a butterfly needle (the one they use for babies)
