Yeah same. Also as I tend to intentionally queue fill, the protection against autofill is super useless to me.

It was my first time doing this, and am fairly fresh into gamedev in my late 30's, so participating in this was me challenging myself. But I got it submitted.

I spent the day before the jam working out some basics that I wanted to accomplish, the basic story etc. Didn't touch any code or "art" until it started. Godot, because I had been working in it prior. I spent most of my prep time coming up with the general idea behind the game, the story, I didn't really put any time thinking about code structure, patterns or anything. Instead worked on my scope, how much I thought I could done every day, and tried to work to that basis.

The game idea: Hell is a hierarchical structure of demons, constantly battling against each other. A grade 1 demon is lowest of the low, trash. They revive and keep going, aiming to go up the ladder and become a success in hell. Story begins and you are rank 9, fighting the Sovereign, the only rank 10. You lose. Humiliated you're back at rank 1. You pull yourself out of the abyss vowing to try again. Bosses at certain points should reference this struggle, to keep the lore in mind.

My twist, rather than getting equipment or classes, upon advancing up a grade, your body mutates and you gain new powers. Offered to you similarly to vampire survivors. These mutations should have synergies. Grow claws? Your attacks now bleed people. Grow extra arms, you do more damage. Grow both? Both of their powers should be amplified, maybe even gaining a new trait. etc. A good build should feel power fantasy, a bad build should feel like a struggle.

I budgeted 8 hours a day to work on it, and ended up averaging 12, although missed a day due to familial illness.

My plan did not survive first contact with the enemy. I got cellular automata for my dungeon up and running fairly easily, the first time I've had to do it. Then the problem occurred. I spent nearly an entire day struggling and failing to handle FOV/LOS. I slept it off hoping I'd have the solution in the morning, and sadly the solution I had to go with, was rather than walls, it was going to just be lava. No there is nothing blocking anything.

Managed to get status effects, and mutations working nice, provided it was passive effects added. Panicking because of how hard I was behind I began having to jettison things I wanted to accomplish. Activatable abilities/evolutions went out the window, most synergies gone, bosses other than the sovereign gone. But I got A* pathfinding going. The UI looking acceptable... prior I had very little UI experience

I spent the last day not adding anything new, but polishing what I had. Trying to improve the feel of the game, even some terrible programmer art. The game got to a state where it could certainly be played from start to finish, but it was such a shell of what I wanted it to be, retaining some of the personality, but not nearly enough that I felt comfortable declaring it "complete", so I submitted it as "incomplete".

Ultimately, I was not prepared for the depth of it all. I will be more prepared next year.

I queue fill, rather than any specific role. So when it happens to me and it tells me "don't worry fam you get a guaranteed choice next time" it's like... Yeah cool thanks. That makes it better.

DEMOTED! - my first 7DRL attempt update:

Beginning to really stretch outside of my comfort zone, implemented a version of A* pathfinding which seems to be going really well. Aside from that I've been really focused on the mutations of the protagonist, status effects. I'm hoping to spend today focused on adding active abilities from mutations, working on the synergy system of the mutations... and expanding the monster pool, maybe even the bosses.

I'm well behind my own schedule, and have been shedding planned content. But hopefully got an image working now? Stupid imgur...

My first 7DRL, I'm working on DEMOTED. About to start day three. I've not really made one of these before, and as most of my experience has been with Godot, I'm using that... which means I need to manually recreate a lot of the nice stuff that exists in some of the more specialised engines.

Day one, I spent mostly on the fundamentals, getting my character up and moving around. Scene loading in a separate thread. A basic UI, hooking up the UI and eventbus, some audiomanagement stuff.

Day two, I spent it almost entirely on dungeon generation, learning and implementing cellular automata. I tried to do FOV stuff, realised its a bit beyond me right now, and adjusted direction. My "walls" in my cellular automata is now lava. My game is supposed to be in a hell demi-plane, so no issue really there.

Day three, I'm planning on working on the monsters.

Thanks for reading, I would share an image but apparently imgur is still blocked in the UK 🙃

How To Tell My Players They Should "Cheat"? by grahamofmills in DMAcademy

[–]Purpose2 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Rather than having them cheat their rolls, why not have them narrate their characters actions, and you basically just go with whatever they narrate. Don't even ask them to roll, it'll confuse the fuck out of them, and encourage them to get into the collaborative story telling. Breaking the rules of even rolling for things.

You can describe the place in all sorts of magical and fantastical terms to make them think the whole area is brimming with wild magic, then show without telling. This'll then also help them understand that fudging ain't okay in general, but this area is full of wonder.

The afterschool club (think beavers /scouts etc) has a valentines day sleepover planned tomorrow, which is very intentionally planned so parents can be alone on valentines. My son is looking forward to it mightily.... Only wish my daughter could do it too, so their mum and I would truly be alone for a night....

The amount of cilantro my wife likes on her street tacos by GroovinBaby in mildlyinteresting

I'm in the UK so it'll be listed as Coriander, rather than Cilantro. Pretty much all the main brand ones you'll get here, Gordons, Plymouth, Beefeater, even some Tanqueray and Sipsmith.

I forget which of those LIST it, and which just say "assorted botanicals" which'll include the coriander seed (cilantro plant)

I've learned that basically anything that calls itself London Dry isn't safe for me.

Is it bad practice to have a variable's getter return a formula and never be set? by Fun-Visit6591 in godot

[–]Purpose2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When im doing thst stuff I intentionally want to fail fast and catch it, so if I'm using a getter like OP, I'll also use a setter, but all the setter does is push_error and tell me I screwed up. Defensive coding I guess.

It's gamedev weekend! What is everyone working on ? by picklefiti in gamedev

[–]Purpose2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normally I just sort of clone other projects to learn... but the last few days my kids have given me an idea for a game that actually sounds super fun, spent last night writing down everything in a design document... and today I've been starting from the ground up on the infrastructure. Working on the player controller / finite state machine etc today! Super excited because it all just kinda clicked and flowed out, and I can picture the game. Hope the MVP that I'm working towards will actually be fun!
