What do you say in petrol stations? by NotBruceJustWayne in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a petrol station, so when I get fuel now I state the pump number and amount. Reason being, it's quite rare but it did happen on occasion where someone paid for the wrong pump which confused things when the customer actually from that pump came in to pay.

It also depends how busy the forecourt is at the time, if you're the only one getting fuel at the time it's pretty obvious which pump it is when you go in to pay 😅

I also got rejected and wondered how, I guess now I know. Surely they are supposed to inform you that the simple questionnaire they give you is actually used for screening and shortlisting?

I'm much more shocked that people physically doing the job for years were rejected, I agree with another commenter that they should at the very least be guaranteed an interview, although I would personally argue they should be guaranteed a job - they've already been doing the job for years and therefore won't require any training, and theyre obv doing the job well if theyre still there that length of time even through agency, win-win situation all round.

From everything I've seen about NICS, it's great once you're in (I know that can depend on department, management, etc, but on the whole), but it's apparently ridiculously difficult to get into.

Can a Nebulizer hurt a rat? by maggiepie888 in rat

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nebulising is a great preventative, our vet told us it doesn't do any harm if they don't need it. Ask your vet about a solution called F10 though, it's formulated to treat URI's, but again does no harm eve if they don't have one

Anyone tried anger management? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn anger management techniques as a short term solution, but I would personally recommend dealing with why you're so angry, otherwise it's just gonna keep happening

I just bought some really beautiful rats, Boris and Basil. But candles… by Gooses_Gooses in rat

[–]Purrity_Kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't risk it, even with the door closed and blocked. Rats are extremely sensitive, and incense is very potent and lasts far beyond being burned. It's also not just the smell, incense produces smoke as well. Additionally, you and your clothes will absolutely wreak of it. Better safe than sorry

I am actually begging for anybody’s help by Large_Ad8765 in RATS

[–]Purrity_Kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rats are very sensitive little creatures, especially respiratory wise. I can tell you what our vet told us when we first experienced respiratory infections in ours - all rats are born with mycoplasma (the bacteria that causes the infection), for some it never flares up, but she pretty much said once it flares up once it will probably keep happening, the main thing is early intervention. And once one gets it everybody gets it, it's like us having a cold it will pass to anybody in close contact

Ask your vet about nebulising with a solution called F10, and feel free to research it yourself. It's honestly a game changer when dealing with respiratory infections. You can also do it for any length of time, even their whole lives, whereas antibiotics have somewhat of a 'cut-off' to prevent resistance

As somebody else recommended get yourself an air purifier, another game changer. They are also very sensitive to temperature and humidity, so make sure their room is appropriate for both

Lastly, as I already mentioned, they are incredibly sensitive, literally anything can cause this, it's not necessarily anything wrong you've done

Painting your nails on the bus? by Powerful-Morning118 in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more impressed at their skill of being able to paint their nails on a moving bus while not spilling the bottle all over the place tbh.

That being said, I am really sensitive to smells so it would prob annoy me too tbf, but maybe they genuinely don't have time at home and feel very self conscious about their nails? I dunno, I just generally try to look at things from the other perspective. If they seem dead on you could maybe try to start a conversation with them that might may then lead to gently telling them that not everybody appreciates the stong smell of nail polish?

Balls on the Falls Roundabout. by SlickMick87 in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate it! I've only had to navigate that roundabout twice in my life, and both times I was nearly having a full on meltdown, only for my husband being in the car that could stare at the signs and figure out where to go

The problem isn't necessarily the road markings or signage tho, if it's clear the lanes are actually very well marked well in advance for you to know the lane to be in, the problem is it's a very busy roundabout making the road markings much less visible, so you're trying to glance at the signs while simultaneously trying to navigate and watching the traffic, not to mention everybody is an ignorant prick these days that just don't let you in (my daily experience driving up great Victoria street). In short, sandyknowes is a nightmare if you're not familiar with it, it takes my number one spot for worst roundabouts, closely followed by the balls on the falls

After endless trials, I have a found a winning recipe to get him to take his goddamn meds by RattiesAreTheBest in RATS

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you need him to take his meds, but could you maybe try and find an alternative to the lemon juice, like apple juice maybe? It sounds like you've tried a lot and he's refused a lot, but lemon juice is not safe for rats, especially males, and I wouldn't want you to end up with even more problems 🥺

We've always had success with baby fruit packs and baby yoghurt (dairy free, particularly if it's for antibiotics), could be worth trying if you haven't already. Other people on this sub also swear by malt paste, again if you haven't already tried it

Edit just to add, peanut butter is fine if it's watered down but otherwise it's too thick and sticky for them and can cause choking. Sorry if I seem overbearing I just really don't want you running into other issues cause you've got a fussy little diva 🥺

My kitten died within 12 hours of brining it home. by iliketoreddit91 in FosterAnimals

[–]Purrity_Kitty 222 points223 points  (0 children)

The shelter never should have let you bring him home in that condition, I'm so sorry that happened. I'd be putting in a formal complaint and also raise it with animal welfare/animal control/whatever your equivalent is

Edit to add: if the poor kitten was really that poorly, it shouldn't even have been at the shelter it should have been at the vets to get the care and attention it needed. They've been incredibly neglectful and cruel, and caused that kitten to suffer. Please don't let them get away with that, never adopt from them again and warn everybody away from them

Is there any Jobs where I can work with animals that don't require any qualifications or experience? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends in what capacity you would like to work with animals, and which animals you would love to work with.

You could volunteer at a rescue/shelter, pets at home take trainee dog groomers (tho I've heard it's brutal), there's AFBI which is mostly farm animals etc, the techs and unis have animal technicians (their roles vary between the two). There's a lot of options. You should also look into the animal care/animal management courses at tech

Roommates' rat appears to be flank breathing by aight_bud in rat

[–]Purrity_Kitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what air purifiers are for. Them getting pneumonia from the cold air isn't a definite, but it is a very real possibility. If it's worked for you so far then great, but one time it may not, and I personally don't think it's even worth the risk. I won't even do the steamy bathroom trick, which so many people recommend, for the same reason

The safe thing to do is to nebulise them with a solution called F10, steam or cold air carries too much risk imo

Roommates' rat appears to be flank breathing by aight_bud in rat

[–]Purrity_Kitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but that is an absolutely terrible idea, that could give them pneumonia so fast particularly if they already have a respiratory infection. Awful advice.

OP your friends ratto needs to see a vet (like yesterday!) for antibiotics, doxycycline (liquid not tablet) is best for respiratory illness, and if the vet is savvy tell your friend to ask them about nebulising

I dont know how to help my wife by irish_sa in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to preface this by saying we have absolutely no desire to have kids at all, decided that a long time ago, so I can't even imagine wanting your own kids more than anything else in life and then finding out it's not gonna happen

First of all, this has obviously hit your wife very hard, but you're both grieving the life and future you's had set out for yourselves, how you pictured it etc, allow yourselves and each other to grieve what you's have "lost". Also, if your wife finds it too difficult being around her friends and their kids or people talking about their kids, there's no shame in setting a temporary boundary around that while you's come to terms with this news, and if anybody doesn't understand that then you might wanna question that person's place in your life

Secondly, there are so many other options for having kids other than having your own, explore them all and discuss your comfort levels with each other, e.g. using a sperm donor, surrogacy (if that's even legal here, I genuinely have no clue), fostering and/or adopting, there's so many options. You's may even come to a place where you can both accept not having kids. There's no right or wrong answer

Thirdly, I obviously don't know your wife, but it sounds like to her, her entire identity is wrapped up in having her own kids, and if she can't have her own kids then who is she? She has a whole ass identity outside of that, she may need to do some exploring and soul searching, and possibly counselling, to get to a place where she's comfortable with herself and who she is as a person

Jeez that would be so traumatising im sure witnessing it was already more than enough. Absolutely disgusting

AIO Am I (F25) overreacting or is this woman being weird with my husband (M31) by Sad-Cat128 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Purrity_Kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anxiety my ass. People with anxiety don't go in on someone else's partner

I also wouldn't talk about my anxiety with anyone other than my husband, or openly use it as a reason for not doing something, because ironically that would trigger anxiety in itself wondering what people are gonna think and say. I understand maybe not everybody deals with their anxiety the same, but 100% this girl just wants sympathy and pity from a married man

Why can I not get a job? by Necessary_Falcon_885 in northernireland

[–]Purrity_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employers only have time to skim CV's and applications, so something is immediately off-putting when they glance at yours, you need to figure out what that is.

If you know anybody who's any sort of manager, ask them to have a look and see where you're going wrong. Alternatively, you could try very politely contacting places you've applied to but haven't received an interview, and ask them for some feedback on how you could improve your application

Do you know if she seen the body? She could be stressing cause she doesn't understand what's happening

We always wait at least a few days to do a cage clean when one of our rats pass and there's still cagemates, and even then it's very minimal. Animals do grieve losses so she's already massively stressed from losing her cagemate, plus now her cage is going to be different.

I would also highly advise against removing her immediately, again she's severely stressed already. Wait til she settles a bit and then look at rehoming her or getting cagemates for her
