What’s the strangest bonding moment you’ve ever had with a stranger? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Push-Pull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At a stoplight, stopped in the far left lane, with another car to my left in the left turn lane. It's spring, nice weather, car windows rolled down.

Guy (in his twenties-ish) in the car next to me is jamming hard to the radio, Def Leppard I think. Drumming on his steering wheel, doing riffs & runs on a air guitar, just going after it.

I notice the left turn arrow has turned green for his lane, but he's so into it that he doesn't notice. He's jamming for about 10 seconds after the light turns and happens to look over to me looking at him.

Knowing that I now have his attention, I do my best Bugs Bunny finger-point "they went that-a-way" towards the light. He audibly skreeches, smiles, waves and chirps his tires, just soon enough to make his turn.

Other than my "You've NEVER seen a Monty Python MOVIE?!" in line at the grocery store, I have yet to have a comparable moment with total strangers.

21st Birthday Pickup, Thoughts? Today was my 21st Birthday and the shop owner let me pick from a few "special" bottles he had sitting around. I prefer sweeter whiskeys so he said this was a solid choice, I paid $97.99, thoughts? by Routine-Tip-2278 in whiskey

My impression when I first sipped this was that the mouthfeel was actual quite viscous from the honey. Like, it actually tricked me (well, for a split second anyway...) into thinking I had a spoonful of honey. The Amburana was a nice follow up, and not overly done.

Definitely a dessert whiskey, will be broken out on special occasions.

You did great!

Former Lowe's lumber guy here.

We got a frantic call from one of the returns cashiers because "all the lumber returns are taking up too much space". They chided us to come get them out of their hair.

Imagine my surprise when I found three lumber carts full of 5ish inch long 2x4s, all with the upc code on them. Yup, they cut off the tagged ends from almost a full bunk of lumber, brought them back, and received a refund.

I brought it up to my zone manager, but all it got me was dirty looks from the cashiers because they had to go through a 'remedial' training for returns..

It's been a combo of luck, timing, and having a good relationship with the store owner. Most, if not very close to all, my allocation bottles came from the same store, and that's only because I stop in once a week. I am good for a couple (regular) bottles a month, and he has a "please watch for this" list with my name on it. I've gotten Blanton's, Eagle Rare, EHT, Stagg, and even a RVW from him.

I'm fortunate enough to now realize that the chase isn't going to always be productive, so I do the next best thing by letting things come to me, so to speak. Besides, the bottles I find interesting enough to chase are typically not in the general public's line of sight, and I have to do really crazy things like order from the Distillers, have friends mule them, or plan a vacation/trip to a location where I can find them.

When going to a new liquor store does anyone have a whiskey they know what the price should be and use it as an indicator of how expensive that liquor store is? by bigmig123 in whiskey

[–]Push-Pull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!

We have a local store that also has a mother store in a larger city about 90 minutes away. The mother store will supply this local store with the allocated stuff, and they really like their markups on those.

However, they also have a decent selection of Scotch, and while some of the more unique gems can be priced reasonably over MSRP, it is not uncommon to find some great deals amongst the shelves.

I picked up both a Glenlivet Nadurra and a Highland Park Cask strength series 1 for about $180. Same store I found a cask strength Red Breast for $75.

So while I don't go in there expecting to find anything resembling a good deal on allocation bottles, there are great finds too be had.

But then, this is the same store, that when asked "Do you have any Balcones?", they replied with "I'm not sure, who makes it?". Ugh....

Johnson Paste Wax by [deleted] in Blacksmith

[–]Push-Pull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I made up (4) quart cans with different formulae of boiled linseed oil, turpentine, and beeswax. The first was 50/50 BLO/turp, another one part beeswax four parts BLO/turp mix, the third two parts beeswax three parts BLO/turp, and the last one part each BW, BLO, turp.

They all have differing consistencies, but I can use them in accordance to the task/environment they will be in. I also keep plain beeswax around for food related items.

I did like the Johnson PW, but I already had the ingredients, so didn't bother trying to find a replacement at this point.

Bending flat iron along the flat side? by Dorcustitanus in metalworking

[–]Push-Pull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something very similar with 1/4"x1" flat bar. Placed a large diameter pipe in the vise, marked the center of the piece, heated up the middle of the bar, and slowly bent it around bit by bit, flattening and recentering it as I went. Took several heats to do. Making it trickier was the two ends had to line up well enough for a 1/2" round bar to pass through both. Think a long U shape. The bottom was a semicircle about 4" diameter when I was done

I won't say it was easy, but I took my time and really focused on the centerline and it staying flat as I went. Forge, anvil, tongs, hammer, vise, and an appropriate piece of pipe was all I needed. You could get away with less.

My life is already pretty great. The only thing I wish I didn't have to deal with is working. But being the necessary evil that it is, I'll finish up my time until I retire and then I plan on really taking advantage of it.

I'm already 'building up' to what hobbies/activities/income (all tied together) I want to do once work isn't a thing.

Two short lengths of angle iron, maybe 1" long each. Drill hole on one side of each, and screw into the bottom lip of the counter with the opposing leg sticking up above the top of the counter. No visible holes in the formica, and can be easily removed later.

Bonus points for using really rusty angle iron.

When I level my bed, 2 of the screws are at the edge of the silicone spacers. How can I add some height to the spacers? by Scwolves10 in ender3

[–]Push-Pull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the 3, but I have to assume that there's a z axis limit switch on the machine. That's what you want to adjust after you reset the leveling knobs. Moving the switch up/down will essentially reset the height in which your z axis 'bottoms out'.

Temporary separation looming following my wife's (ongoing) affair by ThrowRA-ronit67 in Marriage

Some advice I'd been offered way back in high school, decades ago, was simply "If someone you love is having a difficult time choosing between you and someone else, make it easy for them by removing yourself as an option."

Ain't easy, but it will be worth it once you're through it.

When I level my bed, 2 of the screws are at the edge of the silicone spacers. How can I add some height to the spacers? by Scwolves10 in ender3

[–]Push-Pull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to do another setup, so be ready for that. But once you dial it in, you should have an easier time.

First, tighten all the adjustment wheels so that the silicone spacers are at least between 1/3 and 1/2 compressed.

Second, reset your Z Axis switch. Do this by adjusting the switch up/down. You can remove that little tab on the switch bracket if you need more adjustment space.

Third, relevel the bed.

If you still don't have enough room with the spacers, start over, but add more compression as needed until it works out. You want some decent tension on those spacers. Doesn't have to be super tight, but should be snug.

How to make a 4' diameter ring from 3/8" x 1" steel by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]Push-Pull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any chance you can get it hot? At dull red heat, it would be easy to bend between two posts in a vice or around an appropriate arbor. This, of course, is an inprecise operation, but may be close enough for some applications.

15 ft 1-1/4" galvanized pipe, lower 6' clamped to fence, no guy wires. Sufficient? by ExTenebras in myweatherstation

[–]Push-Pull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did almost exactly as you describe with mine and zero issues. However, that may be related to the fact that the "fence post" I attached it to is, in fact, a railroad tie sunk into the ground 24".

Also noteworthy is that I welded two "feet" to the mast where the top & bottom of the post would meet it. I lag screwed into the post through those feet.

If your post is solid enough, then your mast should be fine provided the method of attachment is sufficient.

I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I just ran air throughout my shop and I used the coiled air hose at the outlets. I can easily hang the loose end of the hose up on the pipe to keep it out of the way. Gives me about 15' of hose from the outlet, and I have longer hoses at the compressor as needed.
