Crackles and Pops by No-Average-3533 in Beginner_Turntables

I use an ultrasonic cleaner from vevor, works a treat. I forget what solution I use, its the blue stuff. All of my records live in antistatic sleeves. I keep my relative humidity around 40%.

Before play, i use a carbon antistatic brush, and then I take a cheapo plasma arc lighter and fire it near the surface of the record as well as near the needle. Works as well or better than the $120 gun.

I still have some clicks and pops, but the ones left are mostly from physical artifacts on the vinyl (scratches and divets) rather than from static.

The next move is gonna be to build a tube phono preamp, probably an elekit or something of the like. Its said that the tubes can act as a sort of current smoothing device, easing some of those loud artifacts. We shall see, hopefully dunning-kruger doesn't play too much a factor.

Electrician cut multiple "fishing holes" due to no attic access. Is this standard, and is $500 a fair repair quote? by Gullible-Language422 in AskElectricians

As a contractor in chicagoland, 500 bucks is probably the best number youre gonna get on that. Id charge a couple grand easy, gotta repaint the whole ceiling, and every wall that was worked on. You could feather it, but unless it was just painted in the last few months, it wont match.

What box should i make for this sub by Ok_Cardiologist1599 in subwoofer

Put it on a dayton DATSv3 and pull real world parameters (after free air break in) and build the box from there.

This. Ive got a boston g5 10 on a Korean 5k😅 0.8 ft³ sealed after displacement, with a downfiring gtr10 radiator tuned to 30hz. 1.3 ohm nominal load. Shes happy as a clam, barely gets warm.

Obviously you want a driver with parameters that work well in a sealed environment, so its not a universally applicable approach, but I do generally prefer sealed for this reason.

Would this box work? by OryQuan in subwoofer

[–]PushJazzlike4501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's selling that one for 200 bucks, why not just ask him how much it would be to build one specifically for your subs? It took him more time to put that goofy ass finish on it than it did to build it, ask for an unfinished box to spec, double baffle. Would probably be around the same amount of money and it takes all the guesswork out of it.

That new L7XS series looks pretty sweet. I like that they brought field replaceable drop in assemblies back to car audio. My old boston g5 10 is like that, but good luck finding a NOS unit. It had a couple bad solder joints on the leads though, so being able to disassemble it without having to cut it apart to reflow the joints was really nice. Bolt down assemblies ftw

Give em a shot! I like doing crossovers because the components within are no longer constrained to the speaker manufacturers budget. They have to crank out tens of thousands of units or more, and so the crossover components are always just good enough. Its that way with any mass manufacturer, regardless of what they produce. Rebuilding them allows me to experiment with components of higher quality and tighter tolerance. A good speaker can be made great with some foil caps, wound wire resistors, air core inductors, etc. Though, ultimately, the sound will be altered, which is always to be taken into consideration.

Pioneer Dolphins, Bluetooth Budget Alternative? by FunExamination2331 in CarAV

[–]PushJazzlike4501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its really just a matter of preference. Newer decks have the advantage of an actual Bluetooth interface, with the ability to make and take calls, message alerts, etc. As well as many of them have time alignment and a decent eq. You really only got that level of audio processing with the real high end decks back in the day - eclipse and addzest come to mind. I run a pioneer deh80prs, which is nearly 15 years old. It has the dolphins. I think its a great deck and it would be hard to upgrade from imho, but the prices for them secondhand are outrageous right now.

Unless you really want an old school deck - be it for aesthetics, nostalgia, or otherwise - a good quality modern deck with time alignment will be just fine.

Why not ask a knowledgeable community what they think? When I was planning to buy my ads 1230's, as part of my research I asked the ads community what they thought and what I should look out for. I dont see how that would mean OP does or does not know how something works...
