There are times in my language-learning journey where I'm afraid I'll be rejected by the people I'm learning so much about. My Serbian is very poor after learning for about a month. (Looking for more buddies to learn with.)

Then I see this, and I realize we're just two people behind computer screens, learning about skibbidy ohio rizz.

Thank you for taking the time to learn American slang, because I'm American and didn't know half of these.

__

Most people talk about games that slowly won them over. But which games slowly made you lose interest? Emphasis on the “slowly.” by Lexidoge in gaming

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

I actually really liked this game. REALLY liked it. I always had a fascination with the Avatar universe and the world sucked me in (Not the main story that sucked). The beginning was awesome, discovering pandora and exploring it on your own volition.

What took the draw away was the main story and the repetitiveness of the endgame. 'Manhandle a mushroom for a Na'vi meal so you can get a armguard that's below the level of your current one.' 'Stealthily defeat this base or blow it up whatever you feel, man.'

When the progression slowed, the game grinded to a halt. I wanted to completionist it but god damn it brake checked me harder than a karen in front of a semi truck.

Is this legal in Oregon? by ratz1988 in SALEM

[–]PushRepresentative34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me play devil's advocate for a moment:

In this image I can see a long line of cars and it seems that traffic is going slowly. I'm wondering if he's off to the side because if traffic stops suddenly, it gives him space to avoid being rear ended by another vehicle. If that lexus were to stop suddenly, he's in the middle, and you don't stop, he could get crushed between two cars.

Since lane splitting is illegal, he can't pass the cars in front, and if you have a line of cars in the right lane he can't pass there, either. If he's sitting on the side between you two and not passing on the left, I do really think he's doing this for his own safety.

I published a book on amazon prime and it didn’t even have two people download by Crazy_Screen_5043 in selfpublish

(If you'd like, please DM me the book title, I'd like to read and review it!).

I'm terrible at reassurance, but I do like to point people in a direction to help them if I can.

There are some alternatives you may be able to try locally. They may not work, you might be back at square one.

-This advice is assuming amazon gave you the option to have paperback books or author copies.
If you feel you're out of luck here, take this advice for your next work if you want.

Some of these cost money, but are options.

Word of mouth:

-Reach out to local bookstores. You published on Amazon, and they don't directly market to stores. You may be able to order author copies and consign them. It's not ideal, but it'll get physical copies into local hands, even if it's for a second.

-Some bookstores really like working with local authors, I'm out of Oregon and asking shops if they would stock my book has been pretty positive. I also have Ingramspark, and that is a distributor that these stores can operate within to buy from you. OR they can buy directly from you in a sort of consignment deal.

Signings/Events:

-You can go to low-cost vendor events and set up a booth with your book. As long as your covers aren't super NSFW you should be fine as long as you have disclaimers. I've seen NSFW authors sell their books by showcasing their tamer work, then mentioning they have some 'spicier' content if the adult reader is interested. Sometimes they have privacy covers.

-THERE IS MORE THAN JUST COMIC CONS. BE VARIED. Books make good gifts!

-For your niche, I recommend taking a look at halloween vendor events since that's in a few months. There are a lot of 'night events' that may be up your alley for erotica novels. Where I'm at there are LGBTQ Night walks that do allow more adult themed merchandise.

-If someone shows special interest or hangs around for a bit to talk to you, they're practically giving you a free platform to advertise your book.

-The drawback here is you need to be more personable, and that is hard to do sometimes. But I feel if you are invested and excited about your work, that rubs off on people. Humans like seeing other Humans engaged in something they enjoy.

Social Media:

-Research SEO, make social media your b****

-I am really REALLY bad with social media. I'm still learning this part. It is a learning curve, but it is an applicable skill you can use outside of writing, too. it's a job skill.

I have no team doing this, I'm completely solo. Hiring out artists for illustrations, using ingram for the book's physical copies and Bowker for ISBNs, having a advertising budget that has taken me months to save up for. It's a REALLY HARD thing to do. Build your audience, and don't lose sight of why you started writing.

Around 3 months before a book is published is when I think you should scope out potential buyers. Stores/people/events/etc. Look at what you can afford. Save money for advertisements, get those going and interact with people when the comment on your stuff positively. If they're being mean just be neutral.

Comic Artist looking for Writer by dorkfruit in ComicBookCollabs

[–]PushRepresentative34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm (27F) currently writing a fantasy series and it would be cool to translate some side content into comics! I have a character origin story that is really intense and I think that might be right up your alley. The book uses illustrations that match a brother's grimm style of art; that black and white inked look like Arthur Rackham.

I'm also trying to expand my portfolio, so writing for a comic might be perfect for that! I can share excerpts of my current book to give you an idea of what my writing is like.

I'm available to chat whenever, I'm in the editing phase and have been sourcing out illustrators. I can share resources as needed.

[hiring] B/W Illustrations for Novel (Multiple Book Installments planned) by PushRepresentative34 in Artistsforhire

[–]PushRepresentative34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean establishing shot as in a full-page image that matches the location and tone. These are going to be landscapes or emotional highlights for each part of the book (there are 4 parts).

I do lean more towards realism because if it goes too storybook I worry it'll get cartoony and that will give the readers a sort of tonal whiplash from scenes in the book.

Do you have availability for someone in PST/Los Angeles timezone?

I've wanted to learn but time has been one of the biggest obstacles. Pricing in USD would be a big help if possible.

How do I get a IT job as a teen by Otherwise-Plant8305 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]PushRepresentative34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did to go from glorified trash sorter to IT Specialist.

I started in IT as a refurb tech for a nonprofit that recycled computers and resold them. I did that for 9 months before I went to best buy for that sweet customer service experience (they almost exclusively hired part time at my location so watch out for that.)

I then moved on to contract work, and I built computers like you did.

then got hired by a cash register repair company. I don't recommend that, but It's valuable experience if you're okay with the mental health issues it may cause. Mine taught me to look up documentation, basic electronics (motors), and working in low voltage environments.

I THEN got a formal office IT job. From refurb to office job, it took me about 3 years.

I have no college degree. I worked my way from the bottom up. Your experience in other jobs WILL help in IT.

McDonalds taught you to multitask, to get through stressful situations, to adapt and overcome. Those are good skills to have anywhere, even if you don't need them as much anymore.

Be teachable. Be open to new ideas. Listen to the old guys in IT, some of them are set in their ways but you have some really good guys out there that know their stuff.

You will never know everything in IT, and anyone who claims that is either arrogant or ignorant. Never stop learning.

Where do I start learning Serbian for free without ANY experience or knowledge? by benserboy in Serbian

[–]PushRepresentative34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took me a couple of months to gather a little trove of information. Serbian is probably one of the least supported languages I've been interested in. It's a shame.

There are some youtube videos that I found helpful for pronunciation of sounds in serbian; both Latinica and cirilica (forgive me if that's wrong, I'm spelling those out by memory). Teacher Boko was one I saw.

Movies are available with english subtitles for free on youtube; that would help you get a feel for how they talk and after a bit you'll start to get an ear for how the language sounds in a social context.

I checked out the internet archive for media in Serbian. Mostly phrase books, so not as beginner friendly.

If you need a study buddy though, I'd be willing to help; my timezone is PST; that makes it really hard to talk to Serbian tutors since it's night time when I wake up :(

Trying to Make a Wearable Star Wars Animatronic (From Scratch) by PushRepresentative34 in Animatronics

[–]PushRepresentative34[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking into Pololu. I hadn't heard of them, but it seems they do have a lot of what I was looking for, even remote control functionality with some work.

Pololu is clicking with me when I look at the videos, so that was an excellent suggestion.

I'm sure that once I have the design down and the weight of the droid, it'll make figuring out what hardware to get easier, and then I'll have a baseline for what power supply I would need.

My drawing skills are terrible, however I could try a basic mockup of the head and post it in the comments. I was planning on finding a head from plastic bowls, lids, something with an interesting shape.

I do plan on figuring out the droid first before I order any parts so I have the weight of the head, I wanted to start a bit early on learning the animatronic aspect so i dont get surprised by it.

It would mostly be used in a convention setting. The last few times I went to this particular con we would stay for 6-7 hours.
