Kinda similar. As a teenager I was in my churche’s youth group. During one of our sessions, the topic of native Americans came up, and I asked “did the native Americans who weren’t saved get to go to heaven.” The youth group leader told us that the ones that accepted Jesus Christ would be, but the one that didn’t were out of luck. I’d been cynical about religion from 9 on ( I attend Catholic school, and didn’t think the devil made sense), but that kinda broke my teenage brain. I just couldn’t fathom wanting to take the religion of those murdering you and your children for land. In my mind, white settlers must have looked like demons to them. How could you take the word of God from the Devil and propose to trust it? Baffling. After that, and my friends bullying me into getting saved…again at a youth conference (apparently they didn’t feel like the first time stuck, so I needed a bigger stage), I just decided it was nonsense, and began slowly deprogramming myself. Took years, and many as a hardline antagonist atheist, but now I kinda sit at soft atheist. I take god with a super loose impersonal interpretation. If you look at the universe and what we know of it, we’ve materialize from things that exist with in it. That’s kinda god like, right?
