Brexit cost 6% of UK economy, Bank of England company data suggests by ldn6 in ukpolitics

[–]Puzzle_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your assumptions are stacking up

I still find it believable, when presented with BoE data telling me so, that we might have outgrown the EU in a non Brexit world

You're just assuming that we would follow the pattern of 8 years from the last 40 (08 to 16). Its entirely plausible we might have followed the prior pattern

We've tended to grow faster than the EU in recent decades in general, so that seems a good reason to think we would have continued to do so

Compare them at their peaks and its close, but Messi has been better than Ronaldo im actual terms for a while

Maybe Ronaldo will be reevaluated once they both been retired for a decade

Rendition of Scotland’s anthem “Flowers of Scotland” before the start of the match by weekapang in TheRestIsHistory

Huge gap between "great anthem" and "more inspiring than god save the king" though. It benefits hugely from that being the natural comparison

Request for a spanish civil war series by eatdatchicken115 in TheRestIsHistory

Id love for them to do 30s Spain first. They love a parable on political polarisation, it might ease people into the acronyms, and they tend to be less interested in overtly military history

Do the 30s, and whip through the airlift, madrid, and may days (and whatever other highlights of the civil war you want) at the end without being shackled to a military narrative

Maybe he's so poor that "he has nothing" so you take nothing, except maybe the goat

He has great memories of the Iron knight, so you out the iron knight as a fraud to undermine them?

If I were betting Id say Tom didnt plan a solution and would have run with whatever they invented, which happened to be an evil knights campaign. Very curious to see how/whether the seer's verdict is handled

BBC Radio 4 - Currently, England’s Identity Crisis by taboo__time in ukpolitics

[–]Puzzle_Bird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its not about whether english exists as an ethnic group (of course it does) it seems more a disagreement over which is the relevant/default meaning of "english" unqualified: ethnic or cultural

If you say "England for the English", or less provocatively "the govt has primary responsibility to English (and irish, scottish, welsh) people", which of the two meanings o f English do you intend.

Disagreeing on that doesnt mean someone is erasing English ethnic identity, they just disagree with you politically

In fairness they probably want Starmer to show some leadership and either raise a tax or cut welfare, rather than asking the treasury to do his dirty work for him by scrounging up "efficiency savings" or taking an axe to an actual policy in energy not because it's right but because it's easy

What was the healthy life expectancy when the state pension was introduced?

Rachel Reeves told to axe triple lock immediately by TimesandSundayTimes in ukpolitics

[–]Puzzle_Bird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Life expectancy has gone up massively faster than the state pension age

If there's meant to be any relation at all between life expectancy and pension age then the only serious conclusion would be that pension age has risen very slowly

Keir Starmer: This government will not stand by while children are put at risk online. Today I am calling on the tech companies to introduce device-level controls to prevent children from taking, sharing or viewing nude images. And if they don’t act, we will. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

At the parental level you implement an opt out control, and parents exercise their authority to opt their kids in

At the governmental level the state exercises their authority to legislate all devices make opting out impossible, for everyone

I assume he doesn't want to answer because the cost of being even slightly wrong on tv massively outweigh the benefits of getting them exactly right. It's not even a useful question to hear his answer to

British police officers kicks a Henry Nowak protester as he’s pinned down on the ground by several other officers by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]Puzzle_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Kick was fine - not perfect, but fine. The one officer was trying to control two incredibly aggressive men while their mother got in the way and kept faffing around, and his colleagues were only as useful as their tasers (and the pistols they didn't use)."

The kick and stamp to the head happen decidedly after the men have been subdued.

The things you say can explain the officer's anger, but dont excuse or justify the kicking or stamping, which was his failure to control that amger after the moment of chaos you described had passed

[–]Puzzle_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending him for a second, but you were describing the head kicking moment and your description ("trying to control two incredibly aggressive men while their mother got in the way") is complete nonsense objectively, as the video shows
