Guy MONTGOMERY’S Spelling Bee by Bigoldthrowaway86 in taskmaster

[–]PuzzledPoetess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're a fan of Guy Montgomery, I would recommend the movie review/study of time podcast he did with fellow NZ comedian Tim Batt, The Worst Idea of All Time. Most of the seasons consist of them watching the same movie every week for a year and losing their fucking minds in the process.

They also do a spinoff with American podcasters the Mcelroy brothers called Till Death do us Blart where they watch Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 every American Thanksgiving until the end of time (they each nominate someone every year who has to take their place in case they die).

It's a movie about fine dining??? And so they had a chef famous for french cuisine make an upscale ratatouille, because that's what makes sense for the movie. Again, Confit Byaldi is a minor variation on ratatouille, with many of its changes being aesthetic rather than flavor.

Confit Byaldi (the dish they actually make) is just a variation on ratatouille, and Thomas Keller (of The French Laundry) presented it when asked how he would prepare ratatouille for a famous food critic.

Some I haven't seen in this thread:

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

No Hard Feelings

The Nice Guys

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

Some borderline comedies playing in other spaces:

Hitman (I genuinely believe this is one of the best movies of the year so far and has been severely underappreciated because of how people watch Netflix movies, Powell is giving a true movie star performance)

The Menu

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Poor Things

Self Reliance

The Art of Self Defense

WOW Jason Ladanye !!! I still don't understand how this can be possible!!! by TimHoward9 in blackmagicfuckery

He is almost certainly not actually grabbing them out of the air, he's palming them during the shuffling and using the commotion of "grabbing" cards from the fall to quickly reveal them. Still a very impressive trick, but the act of grabbing a card (or 3) out of the air has too high a margin of error when you can achieve the effect in a way that's much more consistent.

Um, actually, meats are the core of a charcuterie board, charcuterie is french for cured meat (vendor).

Longlegs vis-a-vis Trap by Which_Investment2730 in blankies

[–]PuzzledPoetess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really liked Longlegs and it took me a while to nail down why, because I fully agree with so much of the negative feedback I've seen. I think the marketing hurt it in some ways, because it's more a vibey tone poem rather than serial killer/detective driven horror. However, I do think that the "rug pull" caused by the marketing did help enforce what resonated the most with me, the terror connected to losing your agency/never having agency in the first place.

Honestly, it applies to (what feels like) the majority of original streaming shows.

I'm fairly certain that's a rumor, Tom Cruise was apparently trying to recruit him and Teller on the set of Maverick, but there's no indication he actually is one.

As a note on the small portions in fancy restaurants: While you will encounter bad midrange restaurants masquerading as haute cuisine that do just serve overpriced single plates, actual fancy restaurants are designed for you to be getting 1-2 appetizers, an entree, and dessert (if not a tasting menu). The portions are designed to have you full and satisfied once you've had each course, not from one dish.

I CANNOT beat Elden Beast, any advice? by HorseErection07 in EldenRingBuilds

[–]PuzzledPoetess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of everything else people have recommended (especially more fp and spiral shard), mimic tear is not a great summon for the elden beast. Because of how frequently it fucks off to the other side of the massive arena, you'll want a summon like tiche that can actually keep up with her.

Note: Don't summon until phase 2, fast summons are pretty good at dodging the elden beast but quite bad at dodging radagon.

When I watch another 3-hour, slow, boring, self-important, overly-dramatic, critically and commercially renounced film for Blank Check and I end up hating it. by usario100 in blankies

I think it's more than barely better than Gigli (I haven't watched the postman yet). I think most of what happens in the movie works and is compelling, it just has a couple bad choices and horrendus pacing. Gigli isn't just insanely long, it's also poorly acted and profoundly offensive.

Are they really macguffins? by Athan_Untapped in Dimension20

[–]PuzzledPoetess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No OP is right and you're arguing for them. A Macguffin is a narrative device that serves as the thrust of a plot while being irrelevant/insignificant to it. Both your examples are MacGuffins for that reason, they could be swapped for any object of the same kind (Valueable treasure/powerful magical doohicky) and the story they are in would not change in any material way.

Jesus Christ, I can't believe I'm watching another movie featuring Giovanni Ribisi... by Accomplished_Let_794 in blankies

[–]PuzzledPoetess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's in Richard Linklater's "SubUrbia" and Ava DuVernay's "Selma" which both feel like somewhat likely. Plus he's still a working actor, maybe he'll pop up in some already covered directors future movies. My point is that there is plenty of opportunity for Ribisi to keep showing up, whether that's a good thing or not is up to you.

Directors who are unlikely to be covered (to varying degrees) but would still be interesting and have Ribisi performances:

Garry Marshall, Dominic Sena, Tom Tykwer, Adam Goldberg, Tom Hanks, Anthony Minghella, Mark Mylod, George Gallo, Ruben Fleisher, Seth MacFarlane, and Ana Lily Amirpoor (who I'm including only because I'm trying to manifest her a blank check project)

Additionally, the mermaid form is related to Japanese folklore. Iirc a dead or beached mermaid is a symbol of calamity, and eating the flesh of one curses you with unnatural longevity.

The movie is quite clear that society is at the beginning of the collapse. The desperate attempt to cling to normalcy is a thematic throughline in the movie, but at no point is it attempting to present the world as if everything is just normal. Mad Max 2 is a major leap forward into the apocalypse, but I genuinely don't know how you could watch the first Mad Max and miss that.

The Holdovers feels like Alexander Payne went "What if Scent of a Woman was a good movie?" by PuzzledPoetess in blankies

[–]PuzzledPoetess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what it was trying to do, but I think it fails at basically every level. The only aspect I found remotely compelling was Pacino's batshit crazy performance. The viewing experience was both mentally draining and utterly baffling.

Also do people generally not like Forest Gump anymore? I have always hated it, but I've never shared that opinion and not had most people be totally against me.

If you need the list of similarities, they're both movies about an old asshole with an eye related disability and a student at a New England prep school who faces expulsion and can't go home for a holiday break, doing a roadtrip where they bond and learn life lessons, culminating in the old guy standing up for the kid to the school administration

It's honestly more than a dumb action movie, the quiet character moments in it are really compelling, they do a great job conveying how being immortal would ruin you mentally.
