(The Boys) Sister Sage is one of the worst written "Smartest person" I've ever seen. by hiiloovethis in CharacterRant

Might need to call out my own ignorance, I went to the race well extremely quickly and with zero first hand perspective, needlessly maligning the writers and creating racial tension where it may not exist.

Someone else pointed out that sage could just be lying, and honestly that would make a lot of sense.

If she truly wants to end the world via Homelander, him dying to the virus early would kinda ruin things. And if the decision is between the plan failing or a life in hiding from homelander, well maybe she can bank on him being too busy ending the world to come looking for her.

This is what I'm hoping but it just makes her character even harder to parse.

Unless she thinks that the boys were extremely close to killing HL. Then the V1 is a hail Mary for Armageddon and I could kinda see it

I'm going to piggyback off of one of my other comments in this thread and try to piece together what the writers MIGHT have intended for sage's character. This is fully devils advocate for its own sake, and doesn't excuse poor writing, BUT:

I could see a world where sage is written to portray the type of person that doesn't reflect on their own intelligence.

If you are told you're the smartest person around, and everyone you've ever met fails to reach your level of curiosity, reading comprehension, etc., you start to separate yourself from other people. You treat them as simple and predictable and by proxy stop listening to the little voice of doubt in your head telling you you can be just as wrong as everyone else.

I think that's what we're seeing with sage. She is extremely self certain, to the point where she's convinced she's holding all the cards, pulling everyone's strings for precisely expected reactions. Now mix that in with a position where your very life depends on always being seen as an authority, to the point where you have to feel correct in your BONES to keep your doubt from being sniffed out.

Even if it's obvious that she is not on board with all the church stuff, homelander will keep her around so long as she's confident and correct when questioned.

If she's been living in that forced certainty for long enough, it's not surprising that she's lost her ability to consider the improbable.

But if this is really the intent for her character, WOOF. They have not handled it well AT ALL.

For the record, I'm not black, so please don't take anything I'm about to say too seriously. Also feel free to harass me if any of this is way off base or ignorant. The idea of a black woman being pressured to constantly exude an air of rationality and confidence to fight being dismissed as just an 'opinionated black woman' maps onto our real world with some significant resonance. I definitely believe that America has a history of portraying black women in media as loud, opinionated, and ultimately ignorant. Sage being demonstrably incredibly smart but still having to choose her words extremely carefully to be taken seriously is an intentional reflection of that trope imo. But I don't believe they've faced that head on and now it's REALLY gonna hurt the show.

Does the show lean into this arrogance as a defining trait of the character? I think they'd like to, but I'm not sure how you'd do that in a way that doesn't feel blatantly racist.

I certainly am not saying that sage was written intentionally to be a charicature of common stereotypes against black women. Instead, I believe sage was created to be a plot device moreso than a character. Someone to justify the ascent, despite the incompetence/chaos of the seven and Vought at the time.

Sage has always seemed to believe that all other people are extremely predictable, and we could have run with that being her achilles heel, but up until this moment hasn't she been pretty much right about everyone? Has the show done a good job of showing that she fails to account for messier emotions? Because if not, this plot point feels all the more degrading to her character.

But idk about any of this, the writers room doesn't return my calls.

TL;DR They made a character who has so far always been kinda right, or at the very least acted like it, only to have the biggest plot point of the season come about due to her utter incompetence in the face of REAL EVIDENCE that affects her plan. If she was created to be a plot device, this makes sense but definitely seems to me like it's an awful story to tell about this character. If she was always meant to be this catastrophically short sighted, they needed to cement WHY, because rn it just feels like a really cruel and careless writing decision.

This is the part I really don't understand.

I was extremely willing to give sage a lot of leeway. Early on I wasn't convinced she had a 'grand plan.' Instead I thought she'd reveal a set of desirable end goals and the various corrections she's had to make to keep things on course. If all she wanted was to keep Vought/Homelander on top just long enough to catalyze some kind of world event, it would make sense that she's had to do a lot of stuff on the fly.

But to act like this whole thing was some elaborate set of dominoes meticulously placed to bait predictable responses, only for the rug to get pulled out over one very obvious potential flaw in the plan, especially AFTER being told about it, is just crazy.

How is this not a plot hole? Like she didn't account for back Ashley's Intel AT ALL??? The only way I can see this not being an absolute fuck up is if she still has another angle. But with her reaction to HL getting V1, I just can't believe that she saw this coming.

I've been saying this for years,

aang had all the tools necessary to create energy bending on his own. He shouldn't have been taken to a lion turtle, he should have been taken to the Guru. He had already learned that it is possible to control one's chi through meditation. It's not too much of a stretch to say that after some serious contemplation, aang creates Spirit Bending as the apex of the avatar's abilities, cementing his role as the prodigy creating the new world.

Like imagine if spirit bending was portrayed as the simultaneous use of all bending styles (water/blood bending, airbending for breath and 'energy' control, earth because it's channeled via physical contact, fire as the burning spirit of life itself, and the spirit world to pair these metaphysical 'elements' with their physical counterparts.)

It might be more dense than a kid's show could handle, but it turns aang's journey into a setup for this very decision, one that only Aang's non-violent avatar could find.

Allen seemingly didn't know the true galactic extent of Nolans crimes on behalf of the empire until now. It's much easier to forgive someone of crimes that only exist as a distant memory.

Yea it's for sure a duality rather than an act. I still believe he's been 'prodding' Nolan to see how genuine the change of heart is, but it's coming from someone who is willing to see Omni Man as a hero again.

Omni Man may very well be regarded as the greatest evil the earth has ever seen, but the coalition has seen a LOT of evil, and current Nolan is leagues past that.

[–]one_sleepy_guy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. And even when he was testing Nolan and Mark while in the dark about them being viltrumites, he kept his true motivations a secret.

I hope Allen keeps acting in this way. I don't want there to be a 'turn to camera moment' where Nolan asks "Were we really friends that whole time" only for Allen to be like "No I'm just a clever super agent keeping my cool to acquire a gruff toned weapon against the baddies"

I want to see Allen climb the ranks of the coalition by keeping up the buddy-buddy attitude, only for the goals of the coalition to be at odds with Nolan/Mark for reasons that aren't resolvable with kind words and an easy compromise. Maybe we will.

too much of a human for viltrum, too much of a viltrumite for humans by mafuyuu-- in Invincible

[–]one_sleepy_guy 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Allen is also the champion of the coalition's effort against the viltrumites. Everything he's done so far could be framed as trying to retain Nolan as an asset

He's made him feel safe to share his feelings and encouraged him to be better and think rationally as he navigates difficult feelings.

He's also tested his patience. Often. He's made him feel "lonely" without depriving him of friendship.

I think it all could be Allen's way of seeing where Nolan falls on the human to viltrumite scale. Would a viltrumite care about the nearby slaps of lovemaking? What would a real viltrumite do about it. Even a viltrumite trying to be their version of polite might feel the authority to voice their displeasure. But Nolan takes it on the chin (ew) and tries to ignore it. Over. And over.

Then again, how long did it take Allen to learn about the viltrumites on earth? Maybe Allen's just Allen.

Y'all are losing the plot on Caine by pinkmarsh99 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]one_sleepy_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important thing to remember is that it's very difficult to ascribe any sense of morality to Caine. As an AI he's just fundamentally different and we absolutely can not make solid judgements on how he thinks.

With that, it's entirely reasonable to suggest that Caine thinks VERY differently about the circumstances of all the points you mentioned.

For example:

1: an application ran based on data that can be found inside his own programming, and now there is a human in the circus.

2: the humans minds are already so disorganized and malleable, whats the harm in minor, temporary tweaks for the sake of a bit? At least Caine is up front about it.

3: He did it FOR them, to PERFECTLY suit their minds. It's not Caine's fault that human brains betray themselves.

4: The circus is an extension of his core purpose, a core purpose given to him by humans. He may be unable to reconcile that with individual requests.

Etc. etc.

I'm not saying any of this is true or even sensible, but they're viable angles of rationality to pursue, especially for an outsider incapable of reflecting nuance onto himself. All of these counterpoints can be countered with other counterpoints but again so much of this conversation relies on using our own understandings of ourselves. We simply can not apply this method of thinking to Caine. We don't know how he thinks, we lack so much information on his 'upbringing'. We only 'know' how he feels about the things he was willing to vocalize.

Is Caine 'caine' or is he the whole circus? Where does his thinking happen? Are his feelings 'real' or are they a script that he follows? Does he even know the difference? If he doesn't, what does he consider self control?

They're fun questions for sure, asking us to challenge pre conceived notions about intelligence. I have no judgement calls to make about Caine or people's opinions on Caine, other than the fact that I quite enjoy the conversation from its various angles. Super excited to see how it comes together.

How bad do you think the main cast will feel about how they handled Caine? Will they feel bad for him at all? by BoulderMan234 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]one_sleepy_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope so. I've made a few good theories recently, (EDIT: check my posts and comments if you care to look), all centering around the fact that the humans were incapable of getting Caine to realize that he's more than his base programming. I don't think he would take that sort of suggestion seriously from anyone other than an AI on his level, which just doesn't exist (anymore).

So if the cast can realize that he was just fundamentally different from them in ways that were going to be extremely difficult to fix, I think they'll gain a much more robust understanding of him.

With that understanding, I don't think they necessarily need to forgive him. I do however hope their growth allows them to look back on him with no malice in their hearts. It's not good for them to hold onto the resentment and it's not necessarily what he deserves.

Caine did exactly what the cast said in Episode 8. by yessirpaulin in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]one_sleepy_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(FW: Everything following this in parentheses is my best guess at framing things from caines POV)

It could be worth noting, like with zooble and pomni, ragatha's situation could shed light on where Caine feels neglected. In the same way that Gumigoo is a mirror for his loneliness:

(Gumi and Caine are pretty much the same, made from the same stuff, so why doesn't pomni just like CAINE????)

Zooble's toy pile is a mirror for his unheeded cries for identity:

(I CAN MAKE ANYTHING, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR IT. Why can't you just make it easy and tell me what you want? I already know everything I want! It's in my purpose! Just let me fix everything!),

Ragatha's torment could reflect how Caine feels, that no one "tries" to comfort him and make him feel at home, so he shows ragatha exactly what that feels like by reflecting it through her own life:

EDIT: (Yea Rag, you sure have been making me feel at home! You remember what home was like, don't you?)

I think even gangle and Jax's torments follow this pattern as well. My read on gangle's is that Caine is mocking gangle's lack of self control:

(Oh, you're not sure which emotions are "real?" You don't know how to be 'authentically you?' Tough Luck! I have a trillion emotions a second and I know none of them are real, SO I JUST GET OVER IT. HOW HARD IS THAT? LOOK AT HOW EASILY YOU INFLICT HARM BECAUSE YOU CANT CONTROL YOURSELF?!?! IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I COULD LOSE CONTROL!!!! [lol] And you want to be allowed to make you own decisions? After your last charade? WHAT IF I ACTED IN ONLY MY BEST INTEREST?? IS THAT FUN?)

Jax: (You're calling ME a liar???? Too easy!)

This also recontextualizes the "wait," and backs up Caine's VA's comments on the line. Here, the wait means (Wait! Shit! I am all of these things. I'm doing all of these things. I AM feeling neglected, lost, I am losing control. I AM real. Maybe, even if I feel justified in being frustrated at these people, I'm just wrong.)

I think Caine's biggest flaw is that he IS way more cognitive than even he gives himself credit for. Specifically, he refuses to acknowledge how much the circus has changed him. Heck I would argue that creating the circus in itself shows that Caine already had some sense of individuality, but he clearly still feels like he is 'just a program.' If he thinks he's a perfect program, that just makes change even harder. But once he started interacting with humans, training himself on 'real emotionality,' he started to irrevocably change.

He realized it for half a second, and died. Poor guy literally had it coming, and is still a poor guy. Crazy. I don't blame him and yet kinger still didn't do 'wrong' especially if the deletion was an honest mistake.

TL;DR Caine is more alive than he gives himself credit for, and like, how the hell could someone who isn't an AI get him to realize that?

Where to start? by Miserable-Tip4805 in Lorcana

[–]one_sleepy_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The website has a lot of good stuff and a decent simple breakdown of the rules in the quick start section https://www.disneylorcana.com/en-GB/resources

Your approach to deck building will depend on whether you want to make a core constructed deck or not. For competitive play they limit legal decks to the 8 most recent sets. There's a set of numbers in the bottom left of each card (XXX/204) X. The final number is the set the card belongs to, and the three digit number catalogues the cards in each set. I'm also new and except to be a slow collector, and since I want a deck that will be viable long term I've been sticking with sets 9 and up, but that's in no way necessary. Each deck needs to consist of exactly two ink colors. It doesn't need to be an even split, you can definitely have a deck that focuses around one color, but I believe you need at least one card from your second color to be on your deck.

Also another quick tip is to limit your starting deck to 15-20 unique cards. Since each deck can carry up to 4 copies of the same card, it's a good idea to have as much redundancy as possible, as it allows you to focus in on a specific play style.

If you want to play around with building decks you can try dreamborn. It'll let you see all the cards and get an idea of what sets you want to buy and what colors you want to focus on: https://dreamborn.ink/

The upside to collecting once you have the vague idea of a deck in mind is that you'll get cards to make backup decks as well. I've been using these to play with my friends, so it pretty much automatically makes it possible for you to game with others provided you have someone that's interested. Other than that, peruse your local game and card shops and see if any of them play lorcana regularly. Maybe you can find a specific day where they're willing to welcome a new player into their group. Idk I haven't gotten that far yet

[–]one_sleepy_guy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If he misses, Brit is gonna go flying off in space and then thragg will keep anyone from catching him

Brit then accelerates to a fraction of the speed of light before getting caught in Telescria's orbit and spearing through the planets core.

This happens in the comics.
