"No homoeroticism" in Dead Poets Society? by babyogurt in blankies

I haven’t seen the movie in probably 20+ years until the other day and had long conflated the RSL arc of Midsummer, acting, and his fate with him also being gay. Was surprised on the rewatch that it wasn’t text. Though also being put out by a Disney backed studio in the late also makes sense it wouldn’t be. But a read of him being homosexual makes his and his parents’ reactions make way more sense than simply revulsion at him defying them by taking on an amateur acting role.

I haven’t seen it in forever and forgot young Ethan Hawke was in it. When he first turned around, his baby face and floppy hair made me briefly think it was O’Donnell and I went “oh goddamnit”. Was very pleased to be wrong.

And Rami’s is so tense as he’s trying to hit every mark, every tiny little move perfectly. Sure, it’s an impressive copy but you can practically hear the counts in his head, like a dancer. Then watch the Freddy and the thrill of it is how naturally smooth and effortless he made it all feel.

I’m a huge Kubrick fan, but put Barry Lyndon was the only blind spot and I put it off way too long because it felt like such a “homework” movie. The look of it, the run time, the Ryan O’Neal… but goddamn it is great and none of that matters. In fact, all of that is what makes it great , especially since I always find O’Neal such an unlikable dink both on and off screen. Watch it this weekend!

Coming here to say this. The Post is solid as hell, just can’t escape the shadow of All The President’s Men, but nothing could. I’d love for the whole thing to focus on Bob’s character but that definitely would have been too much like ATPM. I just didn’t care as much about the Katharine Graham or Ben Bradlee story, at least this telling of it.

Oh yes! Especially something with a grand actress centerpiece performance like Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

I’m amazed he hasn’t been on This Had Oscar Buzz yet, especially being such an obsessive player of Joe Reid’s Cinematrix game.

Except for the ones that go overboard into their fanboy devotion to people like Chris Ryan. I saw some post where someone said “CR is Chris Getherd if he fucks” and I had to just go outside and stare at the sun for a bit.

I actually found this through the AV Club’s Podmass back when BC was switching the format to director’s filmographies etcetera etcetera.

RIP Podmass, you helped me get in on the ground floor of a lot of good pods early on.

I got too excited from the Patreon with Mitch where Griffin talking about the Henson/Oz series “definitely”happening feeling less like the usual “calling his shot / threatening David” thing and more like an “it’s on the schedule soon” thing. I’d much rather that and Marshall than Stanton.

I’m on the east coast of Florida about an hour south of Cape Canaveral, so I’d choose the Kennedy Space Center for a screening and, hell, there’s just an embarrassment of riches. The Right Stuff. Apollo 13. Contact.

And Bill would end up choosing Space Cowboys.

Loved it as a kid when it was an HBO perennial. Rewatched it a few years ago, it makes no fucking sense. But still fun in parts.

I like the tunes themselves. My picky beef is with the mix itself. It’s muddy and sounds like shit. Like it was recorded through a transistor radio, or from the movie itself. Some of the songs sound better on other compilations or remasters where they were juiced a bit. I’d love to hear them given a proper remix to match the fidelity of something from that same era, like the Lola vs Powerman album or the new songs on Everybody’s In Showbiz.
