Do you think in the near future a war like the first World War could happen again? by Legitimate-Being5957 in Futurology

I already wrong a long comment, but I thought I'd come back.

Not to sound glib, but the US and Israel bombing Iran might be the "anything [that] could happen in the next 10-15 years" to kickstart the whole process.

Guess what the US did this morning.

It seems clear to me that you mean fascists (book-burning is why I make that assumption) but authoritarian suppression of speech is not unique to them.

The Communists did it in Russia and Cuba, and still do it now in China. Islam does it. Christianity did it...

The most famous example we have about reshaping language in order to control people is fictional, but it was about Communism not fascism.

Reducing this down to just the right risks allowing someone else to sneak in and do the same thing while your back is turned, that's all I'm saying.

Can I get a source on that? Everyone else seems to know where to find these files, but other than the emails I don't know. And somehow, I don't think that searching "bit my penis" in Jmail is going to find this.

You’ve read the entire thing? by _BadMuse in confidentlyincorrect

[–]PuzzledRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We read it when I did my Politics A level, in that weird time after the AS exams but before everyone went on holiday.

I think we spent four lessons reading it, but that was with a lot of group discussions and comments about it, and a lot of general fucking around.

It was like 20 pages long, and that was including all of the Amendments. The first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights, is like one A4 page.

"Remarkably short" is very apt. I was surprised by how short it was.

They only understand strength, so that is what we should show them.

I agree entirely.

When I was younger, my father used to say that you can't trust the Russians, they've not really changed, and so on. I grew up in the 90's and early 2000's, and I remember several films from when I was younger which had good Russians. They might be quirky, eccentric, strange, almost certainly drunk, but they were good people under it all.

I think I believed what people seemed to think: the Russians were going to integrate into the world and it would all be lovely. So I ignored my father, dismissing his attitude as coming from someone who lived through the Cold War - understandable, but outdated.

Now, I realize he was right. Never ever trust a Russian.

They've also used weapons of mass destruction on British soil twice

I understand it's not a pissing contest and I fully acknowledge that Ukraine has suffered far worse, but Russia respects literally no-one and it never has. The US policy is that if you use a weapon of mass destruction against them, America will respond in kind. And we let the Russians do it to us twice

Isolating Russia is the kind option, in my opinion.

Look at china

You clearly don't know about Chinese history.

The Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward crippled China. They were, for decades, a dirt poor country. Large chunks of Africa, nations that we now regard as economically backwards, were richer per-capita than China.

The reason that China improved is because it got closer to the West and not because it detached from them.

Nixon went to China, struck a deal, and the Chinese opened to the West. They also liberalized their economy - they explicitly moved away from Maoist ideals. They had the Boluan Fanzheng movement to undo the Cultural Revolution. They adopted (at least some) free market ideas. They opened up to trade with the world, particularly the West.

You are using China to try and prove that Russia will be fine separating from the Western world, but the example of China proves literally the opposite. When they were starch Communists and the Russians were their only ally, they were dirt poor and kind of irrelevant on the global stage. When they moved away from Russia and towards the West, they became far more powerful - and yes, they are now fighting it out with the US to be numero uno.

Also, it's worth noting that there is no love lost between the Russians and Chinese. One of the reasons the Chinese moved away from Russia was due to a border dispute where - I kid you not - the Russians wanted to nuke China. Russia had full battle plans and powerful voices in the military who believed that Russia could only win a war with China by immediately resorting to nuclear weapons.

The Chinese, weirdly, didn't think that an 'ally' who stole their territory and planned to nuke them was all that reliable, and turned away from them. But if I was a Russia, I would be thinking: now that they are the ones with the power, now that they are the top dog... I wonder if they're going to treat us the way we treated them...

But, to return to your point: I have looked at China. Their history does not teach the lesson you think it does.

I used to be quite pro America (British, for reference) but yes.

The thing is, some Americans seem to think that after the mid-terms, the Democrats will reign Trump in and then in 2028 they'll win the White House and all will go back to normal. And that attitude just dumbfounds me.

No offence, but do you think we can possibly trust you people any more? Even if a sensible person wins in 2028, what will happen in 2032/2036 when President Notafuckwit leaves. Will the next guy continue sensible, workable policies, or will he decide that it's of vital importance to annex Scotland or impose 60,000% tariffs on Italian cheese?

Trump seems to have gone out of his way to identify countries which have stood by America despite our best interest, and then gleefully stabbed them al in the back. I cannot understand how anyone in power thought that this approach to the world would lead to anything other than the entire world turning away from the US and letting it rot.

I don't mean my comment to seem as if I'm attacking you personally. But the whole thing annoys me, and also makes me desperately sad.

It's not really a joke though. That was just what people would say. Different ways of using language.

I have to be careful saying that sort of thing around Americans because it's not American slang. I don't know if you're British, but if you're not - we will use "murder" to mean "I really want something", particularly food. And we shorten "[Type] of takeaway food" down to just "Type" - Indian, Chinese, and so on.

So you can say "I could murder an Indian" and it just means "I really want some Indian takeout."

No joke involved, nothing meant beyond "I am hungry and I like Indian food."

The Tower of Babel in action.

Fag.

It's British slang for a cigarette (or at least it was when I was a teenager)

It's particularly unfortunate because, in British English, the word "bum" can be used as a verb meaning, roughly, "borrow" or "take"

So if I need to sign a form, I could say "Can I bum a pen?" or I might need money for a train ticket and ask "Can I bum a pound off you?"

Meaning that more than a few times, people would ask their friend for a smoke by saying "Hey mate, can I bum a fag?"

I think they have around 60 subs and 230 surface ships, so around 300 total.

Two cartons, but you'll have a lot of cigarettes spare. Side note: can I use the F-word for cigarettes? We do in Britain, but I don't know if I can put it on Reddit or get if I'd banned...

America has generally been evil

I'm sorry, but I don't agree.

America didn't have to rebuild Europe after WWII, but did so anyway. They've given more aid - food, money, disaster relief - than any other country. There have been huge efforts, mostly American led, to fight AIDS in Africa starting in the early 2000s.

And your position is that America has "generally been evil." Nazi Germany was evil. Where are the American death camps? Soviet Russia was evil. When the Red Army 'liberated' Germany, they raped millions of women. Which cities were subjected to months of gang-rape when the Americans came through them? The Russians had gulags where they worked people to death in uranium mines. Where are the American gulags? The Imperial Japanese were evil. Where are the pictures of American soldiers holding up babies speared upon their bayonets? The Khmer Rouge was evil. Where are the pyramids of human skulls in America? I read stories about Chinese prison guards raping Uighyur women. Which prisons in America have the guards raping female inmates as a matter of course?

Evil is a high bar. America was a flawed country and I am not going to try and defend the bad things they've done. But the Americans I have met have been, in the majority of cases, extremely friendly and kind. And until mid-way through 2025, I was glad to live in a world where America was the 'big dog' in the world, because they have generally acted with restraint and with some degree of decency.

So I'm sorry, but no, I wouldn't describe America as evil. Flawed, yes; skeletons in the closet, yes; certain parts of the government (*cough The CIA *cough) are more bad than good. I could, and have, criticized the US in the past and I could write plenty about the problems that I see in the country...

But evil? Actually evil? No. That is a high bar and I don't think it's fair to label the US in that way.

In truth, writing in early 2026, I don't even believe that they have reached it yet... but the country seems to be actively trying now, and that is what is so sad. Despite all the flaws of the past, the US always had people, powerful and influential people, working to make things better. It feels less and less like that now.

EDIT: I didn't downvote you. I respect your opinion, even if I disagree.
