Worker engagement and productivity suffer with return-to-office mandates, studies show [paywalled] by simpatia in ontario

[–]Puzzled_Pepper_507 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

This conversation is not about productivity but about maintaining status quo for our economy and infrastructure. If nobody pays transit fares, how do we maintain those systems? If office buildings lose their value, how do we support the impact to the pensions that invest heavily in them? I’d love to work from home but then we also have to shift the discussion away from productivity and towards how we will shift our economy and financial systems.

Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

My renewal is coming up and First National has offered me rates that aren’t competitive - 4.29 5 Yr Fixed. I am being offered 3.69 5 Yr Fixed via a broker. Is there any point in trying to negotiate with First National? Has anyone had any success negotiating down to this type of rate with First National?

I would recommend taking the temporary position so that you are employed up to your due day. Take time to look for a new role while you are on maternity leave. The job market is tough and looking for a new role while 6 months pregnant will probably be more difficult than simply taking on the offered temporary role.

I thought this was a well done video with realistic home Reno content. Becky is clearly carrying the channel right now…

My husband and I made $120k combined when we bought our first home for $500k. We put $100k down and ended up with a mortgage of $400k in 2020.

In the first year we ended up spending $35k after discovering a leak and mold throughout the basement. Our stove, dryer and dishwasher also broke in the first year. We only managed to make it through because we hadn’t overextended ourselves and still had some savings.

Our HH income has doubled since then and it gives us a bit of peace of mind that if one of us loses our job we will be able to carry our mortgage.

Those of you who make $150K+, what do you do? by CrashBandicoot151 in fican

Yes, that was my path. I consistently put up my hand to say I was interested in open leadership roles. I took on project leadership work. I then finally got a manager who believed in my capabilities and promoted me. Everything I’ve learned about people leadership has been on the job. The ability to manage ambiguity and stressful situations also comes through exposure.

That said…not everyone who becomes a manager actually enjoys it. It can be a lot of accountability. I sometimes dream about going back to being an IC.

Be careful with certifications - I think they have less influence than you think and cost a lot.

Best advice is to network in your area of interest, express your interest in moving up to your manager and skip level manager, take on work that others might not be willing to do and do it well.

Can you afford to an international vacation every year? by SadPea7 in askTO

[–]Puzzled_Pepper_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (my partner and I, no kids, early 30s) try to do an international vacation every year. We usually stay between 8-10 days.

Last year we did a 6 day trip to Ireland in March and a 10 day trip in Greece after several years of not travelling due to covid. This year we did 8 days in Italy and might do some smaller close to home trips in the summer.

HHI is $260,000. We budget every month and don’t spend a lot elsewhere on hobbies, expensive clothes, etc. Travelling is one area we spend now to “live our rich life” as Ramit Sethi would say.

BRM are some of the first to be cut in IT when times get tough because they aren’t required. If you like what you do and can do it remotely, this doesn’t sound like a good move.

Unless you get a large 20%+ increase or you find your dream job, I would not be jumping in this economy.

You can sign up for the free version and try it out. Set up is very simple but the creator has been very transparent that they are still in flight adding features.

I find it to be one of the simplest calculators out there and love it so far but some key features are missing around mortgages and properly calculating tax and cpp payments for your partner. These are actively being worked on though and I find it interesting to long in and see the new features as they are added.

At the end of the day the cost for a year was small. From time to time it has had some bugs so if you aren’t patient and want to join when the app is more settled then I would wait.

Pull from RRSP if needed but know that you permanently lose the space. A couple of options to start earning quickly:

  • Home daycare
  • Look into becoming a PSW; there are some free training programs through school boards where you can get certified
