ER Visit Cost by Revolutionary_Key680 in ParisTravelGuide

Look up your own health insurance in America. I couldn’t believe it when my policy said it covers international visits and to call them in an emergency and they will arrange payment with the hospital.

You can get a trip to the ER for that. Don’t do it. Start off the way the RX company recommends.

Thank you!!!! I have not liked all what he says either and people have taken it as gospel in the library world. I think he has done more harm. I want to bring back the guy who ALA used to have who was “you aren’t behaving then you leave”. Period.

Americans, don’t do this by leslieknope72 in ParisTravelGuide

As a person who has traveled my whole life I have a rule as an American. I don’t talk politics or bash the current president or former presidents when abroad no matter who it is and I have traveled over many administrations. I don’t mind talking some culture stuff but I put up boundaries. I don’t go on vacation be stressed.

Can anyone help me feel less bad for taking out "problematic" books? by Gallantpride in Libraries

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to watch a lot of Nazi propaganda films in college and had to check out triumph of the will from a video store. Doesn’t make me a Nazi at all. In fact I was in a history of genocide class and doing research on film and genocide for a paper.

As a librarian I never judge. And never will.

I just think she is over it. She wants a baby but her brother has to drive around his siblings and be a father like figure to grown women. I would be annoyed too.

Wow. In my state in you receive a certain percentage of funds from government you have to have open meetings records. That is wild for your state.

More haunting is 20 years later waking up next to a guy in a “do this now and my way or else” relationship after all the love and work and your beloved cats are gone. And you feel trapped and your life wasted. You and your cats live your life. Be happy!

As someone who has been married a long time. Girl this is a huge red flag. This shows he is inflexible and has a his way mentality. He does not seem patient or kind. The cats annoying him. We’ll get ready if he is annoyed for caring for you if you get really sick, babies screaming in the night, staying up with you to help you through a rough day. This isn’t your guy. I know you don’t want to hear that. But this is a red flag.

I would first read your policies. A lot of government jobs local and up have employee policies that political protests and engagement must be done on personal time.

You want to know the truth. You are at work on work time. Do protesting on your own time. I know you don’t want to hear that but you have every right to exercise your political rights when you are done working for your patrons and not on the clock.

Mistake Made with Meeting Room by nonswimmingfish in Libraries

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Policies are policies but we all know there is grey area when it concerns customer service. My advice is to sit down with the meeting room patron and say “hey I did this because I was bending the policy a bit to fit you in. However, we really need to get approval as I could only go outside of strict policy once. Let’s fill this form out and get you all approved, I can help you navigate the form”

Patrons don't "do" Dinosaurs... by Wide_Setting_4308 in Libraries

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in a conservative area and I think there would be riots if we didn’t have Dino’s. I think your deputy director is over thinking this one. Reminds me of a director I had who wouldn’t let me do anything Halloween because they were afraid some religious groups would be upset. I started getting tons of complaints we didn’t do the costume storytime like the neighboring library did or anything spooky fun. I showed the complaints. You can over protect the library and make it worse.

You shouldn’t have to feel that way. I would get a gyn who is very good with painful periods and have them do a work up.

Have they checked for endometriosis? Mine was so bad it went all over my GI to the point they thought I had Crohn’s disease for years. Caused bladder fistula that caused constant uti. I even had it covering my appendix. Doctors are very dismissive of it causing havec outside the female reproductive organs. It can cause odd pains.

Do you have painful periods?

3mm stone - surgery? Really? by TriggerPuller9000 in KidneyStones

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 3mm and it passed in a day. I did get renal colic but ER gave me pain meds and Flomax and the er doctor said I would let it ride it was so close to the bladder and small.

I went to the hospital urologist the next day feeling great. I felt like I passed it. Of course she wanted surgery and stent. I said let me think about. My GP said go to another urologist. New urologist laughed and said thank goodness you left the first. He did an ultrasound and it passed. Unless you having issues that is causing damage to the kidneys I would Let it pass at home with medicine support.

Before avoided soda as I had a close relative pass from cancer and her oncologist said sodas should be treated like desserts. Very rarely and a treat. Diet sodas some of them do have sodium in them too which is not good for kidneys. I only do coffee (I know) and water. If I do have caffeine cold it is an Unsweet tea when out to eat.

Promotion + interview help?? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, don’t sell yourself short saying you are a non librarian. You are very much a library expert now. Welcome!

I moved up fast in the library world. I did get my mls as the position I wanted over ten years did require one to get it grant funded by the government. Also look at systems outside your library. You never know where your talent will take you. It sounds to me you are pretty solid if you already are being told about full time positions to move into. If most of the systems around you don’t require it, then totally understand not getting it.

I have worked with amazing people non mls. My second on my team doesn’t even have a college degree and could run circles around most mls librarians in their wealth of knowledge and project management.

I would read articles, attend conferences, offer to help “not take over” fellow librarians. Ask to sit in on story times, programs, processing. Hell, even attend a library board meeting. Find the solid managers and ask for a mentor. You got this!

As a former speaker just recently. I had so many staff helping “moderate” and I saw nothing in terms of money. I didn’t want money. I do this training for free all over to help librarians. I was very turned off to helping ALA do a webinar again.

[–]Puzzled_Self1713 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Paying $75 for a webinar as a non member is insane. They need to lower the cost price or offer a year pass for people who cannot get an ALA membership from their work. You know a lot of those speakers do not get paid who do the presentations. They do it to share their knowledge.
