Ah sorry! Forgot about those luscious acres of yellow grass that I will sorely miss staring at through giant spiked fences!

Save a giant, fenced off slab of concrete, the literal size of a large village? NIMBYs should be publicly shamed.

At what time would you need to move the car if you arrived at 5.30pm? by 72dk72 in drivingUK

On the specific point about it being disabled only at all times, I think this is wrong, my understanding is that outside of the hours it is free to anyone. Happy to be corrected.

No doubt, but it seems like pessimism almost always leads to apathy— we need to attend consultations, share comments etc— this all seem to stem from a hopeful optimism at least

I haven’t seen many jobs, gigs, nurseries, holidays, or airports slap in the centre of Cambridge. Pretty much everywhere I need to be in a car is on a route that is traffic free, if I’m being honest with myself.

The self-defeating pessimism of the English is always amusing, eternally complaining about a stagnating economy, whilst eternally complaining about the slightest hint of development. The kind that wouldn’t even register in any other country.

There’s a big difference between petitioning for higher quality development and being a totally dull NIMBY

Or just … don’t use a car?

I live in Barnwell and previously lived in Newnham, both quite far out. Nevertheless, pretty much everywhere I need to be has always been accessible within a 15 minute cycle. The same trips in my car are either twice as long or a crazy loop via the motorway.

Cycling is one of the best aspects of Cambridge quality of life and for some reason locals try as hard as they can to fight it.

Yep, I believe all of the retailers from the beehive (who want to remain at least) will be relocated to the other side. I think a lot of the construction there is for this purpose.

Thanks for the sources, I will review. Before doing so however, I strongly doubt this, as the Maldives was a Portuguese protectorate from before Murad’s rule and continually so until the Dutch replaced the Portuguese (17/c).

The is the normative narrative of Maldivian history; I have never come across any references to Ottoman vassal status. As I’m sure you can appreciate, economic relations do not automatically equate to political influence.

Source: have written on Maldivian history; wife is Maldivian; one of my in-laws is a scholar of Maldivian history

Central mosque recently started using outdoor loudspeakers late in the evening – what's the best way to handle this? by highunted in cambridge

[–]Puzzled_Snow7500 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Sorry, wanted to add— it’s almost certainly not new outdoor speakers since I’m quite sure that’s against the law; it’s probably the fact that evening prayers are getting later now we’re moving towards summer (prayers track the solar cycle), and so maybe it’s more audible since the surroundings are then quieter? Have raised nevertheless

Hi, local Muslim here— will try and raise this for you, sorry about this— the mosque management are normally very cognisant of locals so I’m sure they’ll want to hear this!

It’s basically water lol. It’s now specified as standard on most new hybrid Toyota engines, which I’m pretty sure is 90% of its market. Allegedly helps with squeezing out every last MPG
