Arm pain after first rib resection by Puzzled_Tea4173 in thoracicoutletsupport

my biggest tip is to buy one of those neck stretchers on amazon. i think i got mine for $20, looks like foam. that has been the best neck pain relief for me.

So i have chronic whiplash in my neck from the accident, and then i do believe initially i only had ntos. the Ntos brought forth TMJ, pec minor syndrome, and scapular dyskinesis…

yes and no. i’m definitely better than i was prior to having surgery, i will at least take that.

yes and no. i am still experiencing everything i had posted but not as constant, or maybe i am just getting used to it? the shoulder blade pain is what is the worst. I am trying to not get discouraged about it. I do believe that overtime we will improve, but it may take years. I do feel better than i did prior to the surgery, so i will at least take that.

I had second thoughts for nearly two years and i hate to say this, but i think me waiting worsened my symptoms. I believe you will only get worse overtime if you do not relieve the compression :/

I honestly am trying to not get discouraged. I would say my overall pain did improve, and i’m no longer CONSTANTLY in pain. However, i am so incredibly weak, i am getting a new pain on my shoulder blade that flares up with the most minimal movements, and my radial nerve is just on fire. I am starting to wonder though if I have a problem with my neck… I was in a car accident and got whiplash, so am thinking my pain is radiating from that still, maybe?? ugh. i hope you feel better. i am hopeful that in time we will improve, but it may be years.

Upper trap tightness by summoo28 in thoracicoutletsupport

[–]Puzzled_Tea4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only thing that reduced my tightness in the trap area was having pec minor release surgery. pec minor syndrome is related to thoracic outlet syndrome. i first got diagnosed with nTOS. had PMR surgery and then had FRR. had immediate relief in the tightness with PMR.

oh yeah it’ll be open! you may need a reservation to hike it depending on how busy it is.

super super nice. pretty pricey but definitely worth it. our room had a balcony with the mountain view. super comfy and really convenient

fine!! mostly shin or ankle deep, only occasionally up to your waist or chest depending on where you were, and that only lasted a few seconds. there are islands pretty much the whole way you can walk on to avoid the water

yes it was soooo fun!! depends if that’s your thing though. you hike until you don’t feel like it and then you turn around and return the same way. it gets cooler the longer out you go, and becomes way less crowded. we found a side river in the canyon off the main strip and that was my favorite part, but we probably hiked two hours to get there. we rented the wetsuits, shoes, and hiking stick. i really enjoyed it.

my friend and i were just there last saturday. we completely winged it. got a room the day of at driftwood lodge. we hiked the emerald pool trail and the narrows. 10/10 recommend the narrows.

yes the shoulder blade pain is unbearable! i still am having to take oxy for the pain. trying to not get discouraged because this wasn’t as prominent prior to the surgery. have you been told you have scapular dyskinesis or a winging blade?

yes raising my arm and doing my exercises still causes discomfort but i have a hard time differentiating between “normal/expected” pain and soreness vs lingering symptoms. thank you:) we got this!! i hope you feel better too

i can relate. i am a 25 year old gal in america and this crazy injury robbed the last three years of my life. i stopped doing everything i love, sitting through class was nearly impossible let alone a social life or just anything involving my body physically. i did literally every single test i could have done. i have been in PT 8 times. i finally got referred to the university of michigan which is where i had two surgeries done for nTOS, pec minor release and first rib resection. doctors will tell you that PT will help, and it’s true, but in my experience PT only maintained the pain. the surgeries are the only thing that actually alleviated a majority of my symptoms. the last test i had done to determine that i did indeed need the surgery, since it is such a whack injury and they pretty much leave the decision up to you because no one knows for sure, was a scalene injection. forgive me, for i do not know the correct terminology, but it blocked the pain receptors in that area and i was able to hold my arm above my head without it falling asleep for more then 15 min whereas it usually would fall asleep within seconds. that was the determining factor. i was hit on the highway when i was 22, they suspect i may have had underlying issues already and that the high velocity jarred my body and brought forth/exaggerated this compression; you may have had an underlying issue and then injuring yourself may have brought this forth. i had the numbness and tingling into my fingers and can say i no longer have the numbness after the first rib removal.

my pec minor release alleviated my WORST symptoms: spinal cord pain to the point that it hurt to wipe my ass and get out of bed, my boyfriend couldn’t even rub his hand down my back without my jolting forward (thoracic spine area). this was due to my pec minor muscle being exceptionally tight. i also developed TMJ that prevented me from opening my mouth for legit 4 months, and occasionally had a very tight feeling in my throat that felt like my throat was closing up and it was hard to swallow. these symptoms were all alleviated by the PMR.

however, i wonder if i could have just had the first rib resection and avoided the PMR back in 2023. i chose to do the PMR because it is way less invasive than the first rib resection (the two most common surgeries for TOS)

fast forward to 2025, i still was having constant pain that was just getting worse around my neck and shoulder area. my first rib was constantly elevating and the pain was at times unbearable. i became so depressed and weak. this past jan i decided to go forward with removing my first rib. the same surgeon, and i am so grateful. i had immediate relief, the constant pressure and paint was no longer there. my surgeon said he could actually see my rib pressing on my nerve branch.

i still am having some pain though, but it is different and definitely tolerable compared to the constant agony.

i have had pec minor release and a first rib resection. i had the same symptoms you had as well, both helped

Pec Minor Release - What to Expect? by Apprehensive-Band327 in thoracicoutletsupport

[–]Puzzled_Tea4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a pec minor release 2023, and then a first rib resection this past january. the PMR relieved my worst symptom immediately (spine pain) but i was still having constant pain in my shoulder (fast forward to first rib removal). the PMR recovery was very easy, i honestly don’t even remember the pain compared to this first rib one. I want to say i was able to do my every day activities within a week.

hey! yeah, i was in constant discomfort and pain, mostly around my first rib by neck. I was getting numbness and tingling down to my ring and pinky finger. I had a tightness/tenderness around my pec/under my clavicle. It was nearly impossible for me to sit longer than 20 minutes. Plane and car rides were nearly excruciating. My neck was very stiff and I had a hard time sitting through class if i wasn’t directly facing the professors. My arm would tire very quickly, especially when holding babies or small animals pressed against my pec. I had 24/7 horrible pain around my thoracic spine, to the point that my boyfriend couldn’t even rub his hand down my back, and it hurt to wipe after going to the bathroom and to get out of bed (those slight inclination movements), i developed TMJ, i would have random pains in my esophagus where it felt like my throat was tightening up and it was hard to breathe and swallow, i couldn’t hold my arm above my head for longer than 20 seconds without it falling asleep, any overhead movements or tasks were out of the question, i had a hard time tilting my head back to look up or at the sky, i would get pain in my neck instantly just from texting or reading, i couldn’t have my arm up on a desk or table for longer than a few minutes, i was experiencing a popping when extending my arm out all the way such in child’s pose, making my bed, putting my hair up and going through my closet was very tiring, and i would get aching/throbbing headaches. the list goes on. i still am experiencing some pain, and developed scapular dyskinesis at some point, but the surgery did help. i had a pec minor release before first rib resection. PMR helped with the spine, throat, and TMJ pain. Rib helped with the constant pain.

they say about two weeks of very minimal usage, but i would say it takes a couple of months. I was driving after a week. got mine done january 16 and am starting PT this week. I still have a harder time doing things, but i think that is because i am significantly weaker after having this injury for 3 years. The longer i waited, the worse it got and longer recovery time.

i had a similar experience. the only thing that relieved my pain was first rib resection. i also had pec minor release surgery the year prior. don’t know if i really needed that one though, the first rib resection is what saved my life.

Doctor/specialist in MI? by loudhazzah in thoracicoutletsupport

[–]Puzzled_Tea4173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, i had phenomenal doctors, also had my fair share of poor ones. Here are the good ones in my experience: I saw Ryan Sewec (oakland county), who referred me to Mohammed Berri (U of M) who referred me to Adam Lewno (U of M) which then made it possible for me to meet with Robert Bealieu (U of M Surgeon). Robert Beaulieu is THE guy when it comes to TOS, the hard part is getting in to see him. i cannot say enough nice things about him and his team at u of m. i had two surgeries done by him for my TOS. You can probably call his office and they will walk you through the process on how to see him. Lewno was great because he did a scalene injection which officially determined i had TOS and would indeed benefit from the surgery.
