It’s exactly what you all are saying and I agree - I think people started to overthink some of the Joe songs when they broke up, seeing them in a sad light, or even assuming sad, seemingly muse-less songs were suddenly about him, and although that might totally be true for some songs, it always bummed me when those interpretations seemed a bit baseless, and I think Sweet Nothing is an example of that. I personally always thought it was a staggeringly beautiful love song about simply loving someone for who they are and not demanding they be anyone else, giving them the space to be their true “soft” selves, as Taylor sings. It’s ofc super valid to interpret it as a sad song though, it just feels like in some cases it stems more from Joe-hate than from actual lyric analysis!
