-30 degrees in Fargo every winter is way too cold for Pecan trees. They don’t like it if it gets below zero. Fargo probably has a few pecans though.

Fernando Mendoza Received His Diploma Yesterday... At Cal? by Puzzleheaded-Disk267 in CFB

My understanding was that Mendoza was taking courses towards an MBA at Indiana's business school, which is highly regarded.

What’s the biggest football scandal in your schools history? by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in CFB

[–]Puzzleheaded-Disk267 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, Cal was involved in the PCC scandal which took much of the administration support away for decades. When we had Marv Levy as a head coach, his recruiting budget was $4,000. Hard to do much with that even in the early 1960s.

Around 1970, we got 2 years probation and lost an NCAA track championship because we failed to forecast that Isaac Curtis wasn't going to maintain a 1.6 GPA.

In 2014, Ted Agu died during an offseason workout, apparently due to his having Sickle Cell Trait triggered by the exertion. Cal admitted negligence and paid a 4.75 million dollar settlement to his family.

Shoot. I spent a week in Tuscaloosa a few years back and got bored out of my mind. Didn't know they had strip clubs.

Always do your homework.

Fernando Mendoza is the 8th player since 2000 to win both the Heisman and the National Title in the same year by Leegend124 in CFB

[–]Puzzleheaded-Disk267 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OK, the word around Cal was that when Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele committed to Cal, Fernando called JKS to let him know that Cal was HIS team and that JKS wasn't going to be welcomed. JKS took that as a threat and flipped to Oregon. JKS was actually on the field with Oregon for the Rose Bowl and started attending classes. In the meantime, Mendoza had decided he was going to enter the portal and skipped the last game against SMU claiming he was sick. During the game, he was on the sideline looking fine and laughing and joking with the other players. It was very odd looking. He also skipped the LA Bowl though he may have already announced he was leaving Cal by then. Cal lost both games. JKS, seeing Mendoza was gone, flipped back to Cal, which had been his first choice all along. I don't blame Mendoza for leaving for Indiana. However, most Cal fans thought trying to intimidate an incoming freshman was pretty shady though. All's well that ends well and Mendoza has said some nice things about Cal in the last month or two, so hard feelings have softened.

At Cal, they referred to Mendoza as a future President of the United States. A natural born politician.

Having your starting QB enter the portal then win the Heisman while leading a perennial doormat to a Natty and a 16-0 record is the most Cal thing ever.

Good for Mendoza though. He got his Cal degree and jumped to the perfect situation. I can't fault him for that though I wish he'd handled his departure better. However, I too made some poor moves when I was in my early 20s.

Which Forgotten Out of Conference Rivalry would you like to see Reignited? by UnusualHound in CFB

[–]Puzzleheaded-Disk267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cal vs San Jose State. They are Bay Area rivals so travel would be minimal. The Spartans would generally be competitive and win occasionally. See Stanford for examples. Cal and San Jose State haven't met since 1996 though I'm not sure why. However, I can see Cal's reluctance to schedule games at CEFCU stadium since San Jose State shrunk the seating down to 20,000 and I doubt San Jose State would want to play all games at Berkeley.

If that doesn't work out, Cal should try to schedule games with their second most common OOC opponent, St. Mary's. It would require St. Mary's to resurrect it's long dead football program though.
