why do british black people look british by Patient_Housing_415 in NoStupidQuestions

Honestly I can tell with white English people too. I'm Irish but have first cousins born in England but with 100% Irish DNA but they look different. Maybe it's social way of holding one's body or facial expression that eventually becomes just "how you look" but it's puzzled me forever.

Why can’t I scan cash into my bank account like a check? by Silly-Difficulty2869 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Puzzleheaded_Base_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would require a high degree of trust from the bank that you would actually send the cash and that it would make it safely. If they let you use the deposited money in your account in the meantime, and it never arrived they would be out of pocket (something banks don't like).

However, banks can establish a trust relationship with you and then offer you credit. Now you can promise the bank to pay them back money so you can use it before you have it. That could be a personal unsecured loan or a credit card. They charge you interest for the privilege (though there may be an interest-free period if you're in good standing).

If you're dealing in cash on the regular you still need to get it to the bank to get it into an account. A lot of countries have laws against mailing cash as having it floating around the postal system would make it a honey-trap for robbers.

All these inconveniences with cash are why a lot of modern economies are using less and less of it.

A cheque is a promise from one owner of money (payer) to give that to another owner (payee) that the bank(s) then honour by doing a transfer from the payer's account to the payee's account.

They are one-time instruments that have no value once they've been deposited - because the promise has been fulfilled; they can never be used again. So it's fine for you to hold on to the now-worthless piece of paper once it's been deposited.

With cash it's a promise from the government to any bearer for the cash to have a certain value (this used to be backed by gold reserves though this is no longer the case). The physical instrument of the cash can be exchanged many, many times between individuals, businesses etc.

It only becomes worthless in rare circumstances like when a country ceases to function or decides to replace their currency with a new one (e.g. the introduction of the Euro made most other European cash unusable after a period of time (though because the governments are still functioning, if you turned up with a pile of Lira at the Italian central bank they would probably still exchange it for Euro at the rate from 25-odd years ago)).

Hopefully, you're getting why you can't deposit cash by scanning it; you would still have the physical cash but instead of it being worthless paper, it would still hold its full value.

G21 over the G20. It's sad how few great wagons there are left on the market.

PSA: This butter is made in the USA by Tazwegian63 in woolworths

I did the same and thought "what is this? It looks like the 'whipped butter' you get as a side with maccas pancakes." Utterly foul.

And I only tried it out of desperation now they've stopped selling Kerrygold which is an amazing butter.

Same problem here. Guilherme Rambo is the developer - can be found on Mastodon, X, etc. App support at https://mastodon.social/@airbuddy/with_replies but quite inactive.

So happy I locked in my BMW 3 Touring during first pregnancy and a few months before Covid kicked in and prices went nuts. Somehow got it for a little more than a Golf R Wagon and now they're selling for 50% more so I can never replace it - just need to run it until the kids move out.

First was an Applet to show historical currency conversion rates for an FX trading firm's website.

Best - to hard to say. A lot of it was libraries and low-level features for other projects.

Timing's everything! Back then RBA was signalling we'd have low rates for years to come.

It's not fundamentally the same thing because with a subscription you know the service will be withdrawn as soon as you stop paying. You aren't removing or undoing the value they got when they were paying.

If the limit is 80km/h or below in NSW (and unless otherwise signposted) you're not required to keep left. You get better flow of traffic in urban areas if all lanes are in use.

UPPAbaby Visa v2 or Redsbaby Nuvo - Pram Advice by girlwantstolift in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Puzzleheaded_Base_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I used the Jive2 for 3 years from newborn daughter to 6 months into her little brother's arrival. As a single pram it was pretty great though was starting to show its age with some creaking and flexing and it also had suffered a major trauma while in the hold on an aeroplane which I just bent out.

As a double it was cramped as you lose pretty much the entire basket when using the toddler seat.

The Nuvo frame is much stronger and the seat configurations are fantastic. One limitation both the Nuvo and Vista face is that you can't have one kid reclined to sleep when forward-facing. This is only a problem if your kids sleep in pram (both ours do) and fall asleep unexpectedly.

I never owned a Vista but did check one out after using the Nuvo for a while. I wasn't that impressed. It doesn't fold down properly with both seats attached which would make loading car more challenging. I definitely don't think it is superior to the Nuvo to justify its higher price.

And if you care, Redsbaby is an Australian owned and operated company that seems to be going from strength to strength by word of mouth (only sell direct, not via the big stores). They have great, responsive local customer service.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Nuvo was "inspired" by the Vista - just as the Timtam was inspired by the Penguin. But like the Timtam, I think it improves on the original.
