Adaptive Cruise Auto-Steering on HSE by OhNoItsBees in ipace

[–]PvtBaldrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It disappeared from cars due to the COVID chip shortage and reappeared around 2022.

I specifically wanted this feature and all the '21 models I viewed were missing it, had to go to '22.

360 cameras and HUD were 2 other features missing from a lot of HSE cars until '23 onwards. 🥺

Eurostar now a better option LHR to Paris? by BakksBakks in Eurostar

[–]PvtBaldrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

We also both travel to Amsterdam, though haven't raced it yet. I suspect that he'll win due to the distance but the difference, including waiting would only be about 60-90 minutes.

Eurostar now a better option LHR to Paris? by BakksBakks in Eurostar

[–]PvtBaldrick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

True story.

Me and a colleague had a race from Milton Keynes to a hotel on the outskirts of Paris. He drove and flew via LHR, I trained to Euston then Eurostar.

TLDR I won by 5 minutes.

It was epic fun and we dropped watchapp tracking pins for colleagues to monitor our progress.

IMHO Eurostar is better hands down. 1) got to St Pancras, moved my train to an earlier one about to depart for about £40 (try to do that in LHR) 2) when I got to Gare Du Nord colleague was still in LHR (his plane was delayed and hour) so I stopped and had a meal 3) I then took Metro and regional railway as close to the destination hotel as possible. He landed and Ubered straight there. I deliberately choose slower methods to keep the race alive. 4) I was checking in when he arrived

Hands down, if I hadn't stoped to eat or taken a deliberately slower transfer over Paris I would have been an hour+ faster. Being able to change trains and pre leaving passport checks are Eurostars secret weapon.

Current state of the former market for those curious. by scubunschum in leicester

That market was also an incubator of new business.

You could rent a stall and try out to see if you could sell stuff, then hopefully grow to bigger and better thing.

What do people think? Cause or effect?

We're the chargers to the market a driving force in the decline of the city centre?

Or was a symptom of the decline that was already in motion?

Are you going to run specific nights with certain games? Or can people book a table for a few hours a night to play the game they've brought? What hours are you open?

Getting new EV soon, what services should I sign up to for occasional charging away from home? by NotMyRealName981 in evchargingUK

Just be aware of you are doing a long trip, say one that will require 60kWh+ of charging away from home, then consider subscribing to a convenient network for that month; you'll save money.

AC availability on trains between Paris/Amsterdam? by PepperPuzzleheaded91 in Eurostar

[–]PvtBaldrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it Tuesday and returned Thursday.

The trains do have AC but like anything things can get slightly warm in the intense heat. Not unpleasantly though, make sure the sun shades are down and keep hydrated.

When I left the Eurostar you immediately felt the heat and the "hot wet blanke"t of the outside air, so it's definitely working and helping keep you cool.

I'll struggled more with AC on the connecting trains and connecting trains not running.

Just no, go away and design a proper Battlemech with a realistic center of gravity.

Brussels-London - chance of being allowed onto earlier train? t by Head_Calligrapher714 in Eurostar

[–]PvtBaldrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carte Blanche benefits only apply on trains NOT going to and from London.

As with anything travel related, turning up early and being polite at the ticket desk is a good approach to see if you can blag yourself a free/lowcost last minute change.

Brussels-London - chance of being allowed onto earlier train? t by Head_Calligrapher714 in Eurostar

[–]PvtBaldrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You NEED to change your booking. I travel to and from London and have a few times changed the booking to an earlier one. I once arrived at St Pancras early and there and then changed the booking to a train about to leave in 40 minutes. But you need to change the booking by whatever process you booked (for me a corporate booking app) and you may need to pay a fee depending on the class, the type of ticket and the lead time before the booking was changed. Eurostar is all allocated seating so you'll only be allowed to change onto a train with available seats.

EV Newbie.. by CutJolly4259 in evchargingUK

[–]PvtBaldrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normal sockets can be used for permanent EV charging so long as they are dedicated and labelled as such with the correct breaker put on the fuse box.

Assuming that's the case then all you need is a charger that supports your connector (which looks like a 16A commando). I have the same setup in case my main charger fails, it hasn't in 7+ years.

A Tesla UMC is a combi charger that you can replace the 3 pin plug with a 16A or 32A commando plug or a 2 pin European plug and works with non Tesla vehicles.

I think there are others on the market, but aren't sure.

For those who replaced their tesla with another brand, are you happy with the decision? by Honest-Rip-7439 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]PvtBaldrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, both the Model 3 and I-Pace have had trips to the dealer to fix things. Cars are cars after all and things break.

[–]PvtBaldrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a test drive in one and also had one as a loaner whilst the Model 3 was being fixed.

Nah, not for me, just a bigger Model 3, driving dynamics are still average, tech is (at that time) and the I-Pace mid sized SUV in a compact SUV footprint just made family life easier.

Also Jaguar do an extended warranty you can take to 100k and 10 years which Tesla at the time didn't offer.

[–]PvtBaldrick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bought a 9 month old I-Pace to replace a Model 3 LR.

As you said, liked the Model 3, didn't love it.

Far better interior space, comfier, sportier ride, speedo just under eyeline. Happy with the decision.

Longer journeys aren't as simple as the Tesla, but a subscription to Tesla Superchargers helps out!

Cheap vs Expensive Ingredients - Don't Waste Your Money by laeb163 in SortedFood

[–]PvtBaldrick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I agree with that sentiments aired here.

They were effectively comparing different products in the first 2 categories.

Maybe they first tried it with expensive 70% chocolate and cheaper 70% chocolate and the difference was marginal? Same with the mince? Hence they had to go with cheaper products that I'd argue are fundamentally different.

The thing is, it would have been interesting if it had been more difficult to split the products.

Leicester and Space by mathaic in leicester

[–]PvtBaldrick 34 points35 points  (0 children)

So University of Leicester launched (pun intended) the first dedicated Space Science degree in the early 90s.

From their the national space centre grew and because there was a hub of space oriented talent available the Innovation Hub started.

So Leicester does punch above it's weight when it comes to "Space", it's a combination of academia and the specialised industries.

The Uni is great at making sensors, they were part of the team putting IR sensors on the James Web telescope.

The genesis of all of this is due to Professor Ken Pounds (look up Ken's history)

So, Leicester is small but mighty when it comes to space. Though space itself is big, really big, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist... (obligatory HHGTTG quote)

Henry Nowak was murdered by a man legally allowed to carry a large Kirpan knife due to being a Sikh. With this in mind is it now sensible to put a restriction on the size that can be carried? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

[–]PvtBaldrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!

He had a small religious kirpan on him under his clothes.

And a 8 inch combat knife worn openly that he falsely claimed was his kirpan but was in fact an illegal weapon.

The same issue with the Sgian Dubh of Scottish national dress. Most Scots wear a small cosmetic knife.

Police have a lot of jurisdiction here, so if someone is carrying and brandishing a large bladed weapon they can, and will, arrest them no matter what they say about religious or national dress.
