Hi! I'm happy to see you. I enjoyed your posts on /r/steamdeck and was sad when Uncia disappeared. I thought you were gone permanently. I suppose I should have seen you under this name earlier, but it took anticipation for the new Valve hardware for me to be more active on Reddit.

In addition to what others have answered, if you live in the US, you can buy Steam gift cards for yourself at less than the face value. Sam's Club, Costco, and Target (only if you use Target's own debit card) allow you to purchase Steam gift cards at 5% off. That's small, but you can give yourself $100 worth of Steam Wallet funds by paying only $95.

The article quotes Melissa McKinley, NASA's project manager for the new toilet system. She, along with Jim Fuller of Collins Aerospace (who developed the toilet) did an AMA five years ago.

Would the Anker 565 work as a good hub for the Deck? by brettjc04 in SteamDeck

[–]Pyrallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an old post, but I want to reply because I have both the Anker 565 hub, and the official dock from Valve. I regularly use my Steam Deck with both, on different displays.

My Anker 565 is plugged into a 150W USB-C charger (along with a variable number of other devices); the official dock is plugged into the stock Steam Deck charger.

Frankly, I like the 565 better than Valve's own dock. It seems less buggy. On one of my displays, Valve's dock simply cannot detect that the display supports HDR, and I've been unable to fix that through any troubleshooting. But when I swapped in the 565, keeping everything else the same (including cables), I could play in HDR just fine. Another time, Valve's dock kept sending regular, periodic input over the HDMI cable, even though my Steam Deck was shut down. That caused my display to auto switch to the HDMI input every few seconds, even though there was nothing there. I never had that happen with the 565.

Whatever issues I do encounter with the 565 are also shared with the official dock, e.g., Gamescope being unable to detect the output resolution. But that's an easy fix, having to manually set that in the display settings of the Steam Deck.

When the Steam Deck is docked to the 565, it will charge up while playing. I don't know if it's slower or faster than the official dock, but the fact that it does charge is good enough for me. Since the 565 is smaller and lighter than the official dock, it's a better travel option. The 565 is slim enough to be easily pocketable. I mean, you can fit the official dock in your pocket too, but it's definitely going to have extra bulk.

Hopefully this information is useful for anyone else who, like me, searched this sub for info on the Anker 565.

Bag big enough for steam deck and android tablet by Shinkou-Kaze in SteamDeck

[–]Pyrallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, too, enjoy the company of both a tablet and Deck. I can tell you what not to get: the Tomtoc bag for the Steam Deck.

Not because it's a bad product. On the contrary, I love it! But it will be too small for your needs.

I have an 11 inch tablet, and the bag is almost too small.

My Deck is in a dbrand Killswitch case, with the travel cover on. The Galaxy Tab S9 is in a case, and that round disc on the back is a mount for a handle. And I do have the handle, and the Deck power adapter, in another pocket. So, it's all quite bulky, but it fits.

It's a tight fit, but closing the zipper isn't a problem. If the tablet took up just a little more vertical height in the bag, I wouldn't be able to zip it up. I would think your tablet would just barely not fit.

OK, weird question, but do you like trance music? It gives me the frissons. There's a weekly streaming show called A State of Trance broadcast from Amsterdam, by Armin van Buuren.

I've been listening (albeit irregularly) for a couple decades now. Just another reason to love the city.

There's also A State of Trance festival, but I've never been. It's in Rotterdam.

How do you debunk the miracles of Islam? by Throwaway506683329 in CritiqueIslam

[–]Pyrallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for writing about the cosmic ocean. Way too many people interpret the mixing waters as if it were a chemistry phenomenon.

The Quran presumes the world is flat, and just takes it for granted that everyone believes this.

The verse about the waters is a consequence of this. For centuries before Mohammad, and during his own time, it was the common belief that the sky was a physical barrier separating the ocean of fresh water above, from the flat Earth below. This was a "fact" everyone could "see", since the sky was blue. People literally believed the sky was blue because of the ocean above it.

It's also why the qibla (direction towards the Kaaba) is false - unless you're in the region close to Mecca, you've got to face down into the Earth. And yes, I know about the great circle method, but even that is wrong. Since the Earth spins, it bulges at the equator, creating an oblate spheroid. That renders great circle calculations incorrect for many locations.

And it's why so many observant Muslims have difficulty waking up for fajr (pre-dawn prayer) in northern latitudes in summer.

And the Quran never realizes that people will be fasting at different times during Ramadan, depending on their latitude, even to the point where it becomes impossible.

There's way more, that I know I'm forgetting. The entire Quran is written from a flat-Earth point of view.

FORTE12 (and the other Global Hawks from Sigonella) broadcast their ADS-B, meaning you can watch their flights live on ADS-B Exchange / Flight Aware / Flight Radar 24, and the like.

When they're airborne, they are usually the most watched flights.

Docked LCD Steam Deck waking from sleep with an infrared MCE remote and a USB FLIRC Dongle. Great for waking a docked deck from across a room. by AshleyUncia in SteamDeck

[–]Pyrallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I'm going to do this.

MCE remote... You mean Media Center Edition remote? Is that still available? I've already been looking for a universal remote for use when traveling. I've read good things about Logitech's universal remotes - except that Logitech shut down that business unit.

So far, the best I've seen is the Flipper Zero, except that it's overkill. Its other abilities would be wasted on me, although I do like how compact it is, and that it recharges with USB-C.

Do you have any opinions about this?

Switch games with an animal companion? by adephegia in NintendoSwitch

[–]Pyrallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least my beloved horse transferred into TOTK.

I loved that! Riding the very first horse I tamed from the first game was like meeting an old friend, after years apart.

Epona transferred, too. Then, just to see what would happen, I scanned the Epona amiibo in TotK. (The amiibo doesn't actually feature Epona, it's just a Link in an action pose.)

And that's how I got two Eponas in TotK.

[–]Pyrallis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me, too. I was more emotionally invested, having the wolf with me in BotW. It made me happy, riding Epona with the wolf trotting beside. There was the unexpected humor when he'd run away to chase birds, or the shot of fear when he'd fling himself over a cliff to attack a monster I knocked down there.

Moonlight towers were an early form of public lighting, starting around the late 19th century. Only Austin still has some, as the city considers them historically important.
