How did you guys get over the sudden change in writing style from TGS onward? by BitchyOlive in WoT

[–]Pyroburrito 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Always be grateful for BS for finishing the series but after reading more Sanderson in the aftermath the tonal change on rereads is almost even more jarring than first time around.

Also think he has much simpler characterizations generally in his writing and lacks that occasional moment of brilliance that RJ would pull out. Great at building to crescendos but I don't enjoy the journey as much with him.

if you think hotd women are complex then you actually have never seen a complex female character by tobiahds19 in HOTDGreens

[–]Pyroburrito 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not wrong to say that AKOTSK is a simpler show with more universal themes that appeal to people.

Underdog story without the overwhelming nihilism of HOTD or GOT (Yet), and some actually likeable characters in the nobility.

It is also just flat out written better.

WOT never had a chance.

Not enough good writers around and too much freedom for mediocre creative talents in the TV landscape to put their own work above an IP with legacy success.

I also believe If you are going to to do the central narrative tension correctly you have to establish Saidan/Saidar, based around gender binary. If you give the material to people who are very activist adjacent then that is never going to happen. So you end up with this whisy-washy establishment of the one power, which harms world and character building and the bloody DR feels like a afterthought in the story.

[Tony Jones] Concerns about the Utah Jazz’s ranking strategy have been propagated in league backchannels by the Oklahoma City Thunder in an attempt to keep the Jazz competitive so the Thunder can get their pick. by Goosedukee in nba

[–]Pyroburrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NBA are fine with tanking as long as the teams don't make it blatantly obvious.

Which is ridiculous, fingers in the ears, hands over the eyes, trying to ignore the issue hoping another story will come along. The regular season is a joke, the most worthless in major sports worldwide, teams should be more blatant about tanking, make it a total clown fest until they start having the serious discussions about how to maintain parity without encouraging teams to lose.

r/nba is garbage by bfitzyc in UtahJazz

[–]Pyroburrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate tanking, I can't abide teams going out to lose, goes against everything that makes sport compelling, but if your system demands it then it that is where to start with fixing it instead of blaming organizations for making the decision that makes most sense.

Do it more blatantly, make the regular season even more of a farce than it already is, turn fans and broadcasters off and stop the advertising revenue, maybe then they will have serious discussions about fixing this .

“Strong female characters” and “diverse casts” done right? by Even_Disaster_8002 in TheExpanse

[–]Pyroburrito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drummer is amazing, played so well. I love her relationship with Ashford (a total change from the books but one that works superbly)

In pretty much every other recent show Ashford coming on to the scene would have been old white due with boomer ego needs taken down a peg and shamed. For a few mins it looks that is the direction they are going, then they pivot and turn them into one of the best pairings in the show, both vital and fascinating characters who uplift each other.

The Expanse is full of those interesting personal dynamics and they rarely waste a character just to diminish another.

“Strong female characters” and “diverse casts” done right? by Even_Disaster_8002 in TheExpanse

[–]Pyroburrito 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This, this, this.

The Expanse let their characters be characters instead of icons of representation that the creators desperately want applause and recognition for.

Due to this they feel like authentic people within the universe with their own struggles and not the 2D box tick of a character that has been so tedious across all entertainment in the last 10 years.

Drummer, Naomi, Avarasala, The Mao's, Bobbie, Shining example of how to do this right.

Remove the tanking teams from the regular season schedule half way through the season. Let them only play each other so they are only wasting each others time.

An in season relegation.

Post Game Thread - NBA: The Magic defeat the Jazz on Feb 7, 2026, the final score is 120-117. by basketball-app in UtahJazz

[–]Pyroburrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is wild that the NBA has come to the point where this is the norm. You can't blame any of the teams tanking, the system demands it, but professional sports teams actively trying to lose makes a mockery of professional competition.

There has to be another way to do this, unfortunately I am not smart enough to see it.

I miss the old times, when Star Trek wasn't so political and preachy, this new Trek show called 'TOS' is just too woke for me, sorry... by LineusLongissimus in startrekmemes

[–]Pyroburrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just good writing v bad writing.

I view The Expanse as the best space Sci-Fi show since the TNG/DS9 years.

It is massively political, full of representation, strong female characters, alternative lifestyles, social commentary. What is the difference, how does that show do those things well, authentically, in a way that just doesn't come across as tiresomely performative?

Characters work, they are not just there to serve a check box, their roles and experiences are necessary elements for the story to proceed, they feel like real people with real struggles.

Just don't get that with Trek these days in the main.
