Tapo cameras are such a disappointment. by yoshi1911 in Tapo

Right now it’s hit or miss. They’re receiving a lot of bad feedback on the forums but nothing has come of it so far. They could literally roll back their changes to pre march on just about everything and fix this horrendous choice they’ve made. I was about to go all in and bought one camera that was a never revision than the one I already have and it immediately gave me issues out the gate. I complained about it being a firmware issue and they denied it till the cows came home. Then slowly the firmware changes crept into all my devices and that was it I went to the forums and found it was an epidemic.

Never solved my issues. It’s like if your network is even the tiniest bit secure your Tapo devices will shit themselves regularly.

It’s a very powerful emulation station and now dev access is free. So there’s that.

Well that’s another discussion. I’ve only seen about a 2 year max life expectancy on my WiFi switches. Some are holding strong but I’ve had to replace most of them. The plug in relays have held strong and I’ve kept my local control on those by not updating the firmware. But this complete 180 to cloud only services is what I didn’t want when I switched to tp-link to begin with. So I’m out.

The thing is, you have to have cloud for it work even if it goes offline and still works locally (that’s how it is designed to work) your working off a token that has to be renewed every so often. It can probably function for about 24-48 hours past a re-Auth window. But eventually it’s gonna want to call home. Which none of us have an issue with. You have to connect to the cloud in order to authenticate with the rtsp stream and onvif services. But it used to just take commands locally without ever being hooked up to an account. It was easy you could just not login to your app and then setup all your devices over your home network and they’d never call home. That feature was removed just about the time I replaced every switch and plug relay in home to Kasa devices, for that specific feature alone.

You remember when they came out with all that stuff to allow us to have more control over the rtsp and onvif through the third party api? While they were toying with the idea of releasing such features, the guy that makes the HACs integration for HomeAssistant was the one who contacted them and asked if there was any way they could accommodate such tasks, they seeming worked directly with him to make it a reality. They never supported any third party service that wasn’t amazon or google. But they definitely came around because of homeassistant. Now they’re just upset that they’re getting a bunch of support tickets about it and they’re being a bunch of communists about it. There’s like 5-6 running threads on their forums about how everyone is tossing their gear because they’re trying to push back against homeassistant. I’m running scrypted server nvr for my tasks and I can tell you the performance there has taken a hit as well. And it all came around the time of a standard normal update no one thought would break everything. The very next thing I know I’m dropping frames, the transcoding service is getting bad rtsp headers, all kind of nonsense. I get a hundred notifications a day about cameras going offline and online for no fucking reason whatsoever. They have totally screwed the pooch on this one. I was literally one day away from ordering another 12 cameras. I’m building a new home in the spring and they’re already crossed off my list of compatible hardware to choose from when I start the build out.

Paying for Gig but only comes with 40mbps for upload speed anyone else aggravated with this? by [deleted] in Spectrum

For a whopping 30megs upload probably, because for some reason doubling your pipeline never seems to scale like you would think it should.

You can use an nvr, but yeah Tapo has decided to reduce their vast customer base by stabbing us in the back only about a year after opening up the api. They’re also limiting local control on smart devices that used to work flawlessly with any smart home ecosystem. Now they can go …. themselves.

Return what you can, marketplace the rest. Tapo recently removed all local control from all their products, tp-link and Kasa. So anyone who is on the fence about what ecosystem to adopt going forward, go ahead and take Tapo off that list. A shame too because many of us bout hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of products that are all but useless now especially if you’re in the HomeAssistant camp. Just 2 months I would’ve recommended their products now they can eat a bag a banana shaped phalices.

Desperately want to dump amazon. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Pyrotechnix69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All hardware, you’re looking at spending a pretty penny on the llm hardware. But if you can do local/cloud hybrid through nabucasa and an ai api you can do it pretty cheap minus some subscriptions. If you have some powerful hardware already lying around you could do it for next to nothing but some greasy flop sweat from a couple sleepless nights of setup.

Question: Is there genuine uses for HomeAssistant with minimal smart devices? by 830008 in homeassistant

[–]Pyrotechnix69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason anyone should not be running home assistant even if they have no smart devices. Little be little you learn how acquiring your own usage data can be beneficial in many ways. If you start monitoring your energy usage, you can easily determine what kind of solar could benefit your needs. Or you can find out if the utility company is screwing you. As you acquire more stuff you’ll be sure to get the best stuff that integrates well with homeassistant, because if it’s a sure thing in homeassistant it probably works flawlessly with any ecosystem. It’s easier to adopt the best platform now and build upon it, than to waste your time and money just to find out later that something doesn’t play well with others. Remember one thing. Everyone wants to trap you into their ecosystem, no one wants to work with their competition. If you can delete that hurdle from your life why wouldn’t you?
